    Dakota Sunsets RV Park

    Clean campground for stopover

    Stayed here for one night on our way across country. Had to change our date at the last minute and the owners were very accommodating, so 5 stars for that. Laundry facilities are nice and they have a change machine available. Also a nice dog park with toys for the doggies. I did not use the washroom here so can’t comment on that. Owner met me when I came in and offered assistance in getting into my spot etc. Also brought over a picnic table as mine was missing. Their website gave me some difficulty with the original booking, so I had to call. Supposedly they don’t take reservations over the phone, but they did do mine over the phone. Cons: It is right on the highway so you will hear noise from that unless your a/c is running. Also there was a gravel road running along the side of the campground with heavy trucks coming and going that stirred up a bit of dust. And of course sites a pretty close together. I would definitely stay here again and really appreciate the owner being understanding about having to change my reservation last minute as it was prepaid.

    Union Grove State Park Campground

    Not worth the money

    We just wanted a place to stop and sleep with electricity so we could use the AC. Arrived @6:30pm and left by 6:00 am. Per the sign in board we had to pay $15 day use fee for 2 days based on the hours shown. Camping was $30 plus a $10 fee to pay for the site. It was however, less than the cost of a hotel, but still not worth it for what we were doing. We didn’t even take the camper off the hitch. A plus was the bathroom! Shower and toilet in one room. Was one of the nicest bedrooms we’ve ever used camping. Water temperature was great and the the room was clean. Complete with a fan to help with drying of the floor.

    Hills RV Park

    Quick convenient stop

    This was a great place to stop for one night on my way to the attractions. It’s an older campground and it shows. The owner was wonderful and very helpful. The price was unbeatable and check in was a breeze.

    Roubaix Lake

    Roubaix in July

    Nice campground. It was after fourth of July celebrations so pretty quiet. Beach and small lake very popular for floating and fishing on a hot summer day.

    Balsar Gulch Dispersed Camping

    Awesome spot near towns

    This spot has tons of options. Just a few minutes from Rapid City and Hill city. We tent camped and there’s some beautiful views near some fields perfect for a tent or a rig. No facilities so make sure to bring water and practice LNT. Also a 5 minute drive from Sheridan Lake so you can enjoy the amenities without paying for a crowded spot

    Nice campground. 6 tent sites. Playground, putt putt golf. Nice store. Table and fire ring. Laundry and showers. Very friendly employees very helpful.

    Whistler Gulch Campground & RV Park

    Owner Integrity Issues

    We rented a Premium Spot here in February for the July 4th weekend. We had to pay up front and the website is very blunt about keeping the rules and extra charges if you don’t.

    We checked in and were given our two sites. It’s a mediocre campground at best and mostly used by people who are doing off road with side-by-sides. It’s a straight-up hill and all sites are tiered and un-level.

    We parked our rig and were gone for the day. The owner decided to rent our second site because she didn’t think we were using it. She refunded $20 per night for the site and thought that was okay.

    Who, in their right mind, thinks it’s okay to rent out a spot that’s already been rented, MONTHS IN ADVANCE. She blamed me because my rig looked like an enclosed trailer. She said the guy walked in and was in a rough spot. So, she thought everything would be okay because she refunded me $20 so she could rent it out again for $70.

    Owner has a complete lack of integrity and could rip you off next. I would NEVER recommend this campground. Over priced, under managed.

    Comanche Park

    Nice nature sites- no water-at all

    We love the fact we can drive through and choose our site. Some are level, most are not

     ( however most people are prepared for this fact) Seems like most federal parks we’ve stopped at hold sites for last minutes drive ins. 

    Very, VERY quiet park with no dump station or any access at all to water. All the water Spickets are covered and “ no water working”). There is a large holding tank ( for the hosts use only) Plan ahead. There are several campgrounds nearby. The one we pulled into was $25 to dump.!! Propane also available up the road at the camp ground(Beaver something?) and a KOA nearby. 

    Great location just out of town. We watched a deer and her fawn each night. 

     Host is friendly but I could have done without the 30 minutes of political opinions. Just not my thing.
