Overnight Stop

It is essentially a gravel parking spot with a boat ramp and pit toilet. Nothing special, we stopped for an overnight on our way to Utah and it worked for us.

Great spot. Cheap, not free.

Looking up free spots for the evening. Came across this gem. A few miles of dirt road off the interstate and several spots next to a boat ramp. Was $11.67 to stay here. I'd stay again.

Dude Ranch

Absolutely beautiful weather! If you like to fish, this is the spot. There’s a boat ramp as well. There’s no water or electricity so make sure to bring plenty of water with you. Lots of beautiful little birds to watch. The sun sets under the hills and rises over the river. Made some friends here too! There’s a toilet but I didn’t use it 😬

Only downside is that it’s no longer free. The fee when I went was $11.87.

If I’m ever in South Dakota again I would definitely stay here!

Great Off Highway Spot for Quick Night Sleep

It’s sometimes hard finding a spot off the highway when venturing West that offers a nice view and a little seclusion before you head into the Badlands / Blackhills area. We’ll not anymore! This took approximately 10 minutes to arrive from the highway exit and offered a pit toilet, river access, and fire rings / tables at some sites.

Ample parking for all types of vehicles I shared the lot with about 6 others on a Tuesday night. Everyone was respectful and friendly. Bathrooms were pretty kept up as well.

Not a lot of privacy as it’s mostly a large gravel lot, but some sites offer a bit of tree cover.

Dirt road was graded but would be bumpy in a car or RV, but still manageable.

Unexpectedly delightful free tent camping.

The approach road is a little rough, but was no problem for our Honda Civic. Pit toilet was clean. There are a handful of great sites to choose from along the bank of the Missouri river. We got there around 8pm and had no trouble finding a place to set up, despite all the pay/RV parks nearby being full. There were a lot of black flies, and morning cow moos, but the ambience and morning river swim more than made up for it.

Right off 90 easy free overnighter

Beautiful off the Missouri . Bathroom and dumpster. Very dark no lights no other amenities, very bumpy street, go slow! . Perfect to sleep and drop a line in the morning before getting back on the road.

Great stop for passing through!

This was a free camp area right next to the highway, with easy to follow signs and no type of check in. Great stop for a roadtrip, real relaxed and simple. Basically pick your own spot and set up camp!

(Millions of mayflies at night this time of year- they didn’t bother us too much though)

Free, pretty, slightly dirty

This campground is right near the water, there is a breeze and the sound of waves crashing which is lovely. Behind, there are rolling hills and cows. The campground itself is kind of a big grassy/paved area. There are picnic tables. There is a pit toilet which did not smell but did have lots of black flies :( there was trash in the fire pits and around the campground.

I stayed here because it’s free and near the river! It was my first time at a free campsite. There were flies and little bitey moth things—make sure you have something to keep out the bugs.

As a solo non-male traveler I felt pretty exposed here. There aren’t a lot of private flat areas (I camp in my Prius so it’s gotta be flat.) There were a few other campers, most in RVs.

There is, however, a sort of secret secluded camp site if you go to the end of campground and follow the little two track. My Prius doesn’t have enough clearance, but perhaps a more intrepid vehicle could. I saw someone parked way at the of the beach area which seemed like a sick spot.

As others mentioned, it’s windy!

Nice open lot on river

Rough road leading to boat landing lot but luckily not too long. There are a few picnic tables close to the vault toilet on the upper/north end of dyrt lot. We chose to park the campervan east of that along the river bank. Woke up to the sun rising over the Missouri River. Would stop again!

Open space

Stayed here in July. It’s an open area with a few picnic tables and fire pits, not really set spots. The night we stayed got windy as there was a big storm in the distance, which was pretty cool to watch considering it stayed away from us!

Excellent for a stop over

Nice place to camp with about 6-7 spots 3 had picnic tables and fire pit. Right on the water, you can even walk down the beach area and swim. This place also has a vault toilet and trash
