Baja Area Dispersed - Buffalo Gap National Grassland

Sitting just south of the Badlands National Park interior entrance, the Baja Area Dispersed site in Buffalo Gap National Grassland spreads across open grassland terrain with sightlines toward the eroded peaks to the north. The area is large. Campers consistently note that the sheer size of the zone makes it easy to find a spot well away from other groups, even during busier summer weekends.

Road conditions are the most important variable here. The access track is unimproved dirt, and after rain it turns slick fast. One reviewer learned this the hard way with a large rig and received tow quotes starting at $320 from a company in Kadoka. A gravel section near the entrance provides firmer footing, and that's the safest place to park if there's any moisture in the forecast. Drier conditions open up the broader area to most vehicles, and Jackson M. notes that "some mellow spots allow non high clearance cars to get around."

Insects are a recurring theme across multiple visits. Mosquitoes and biting flies show up reliably through summer, so repellent is worth packing regardless of when you arrive. The trade-off, according to several reviewers, is night sky quality that holds up even on hazy days. Cell service is listed as available, and campfires are permitted. There are no toilets, water, or other infrastructure on site, so everything needs to come in with you.

Buffalo Gap National Grassland Dispersed near Hurley Butte sits a couple miles to the northwest for campers who want a comparable free option in the same general corridor. The SD-240 Roadside Pullout near Badlands NP Interior Entrance is another nearby alternative with quick highway access. Note that pets are not permitted at the Baja Area site, and fall visits, when insects thin out and the atmosphere clears, tend to draw the most consistent praise from reviewers.

Many campers appreciated the spacious, accessible area offering excellent privacy and stunning Badlands views. Guests commonly noted mosquitoes as the main drawback during summer visits.

Baja Dispersed Camping

The location was very nice, very close to the park entrance, visitor center, hikes, and scenic views. However if you’re in a big rig and there’s been rain in the forecast, please just stick to the small section of laid gravel right at the entrance. Do not make the same mistake we did and get stuck. The nearest tow company with a winch is in Kadoka and the cheapest quote we could get was $320.

Big Winds

Just as others have said, this place offers great views on the way into the Badlands from the SE. If not for the Saharan dust in the upper atmosphere and the full moon, the stargazing is likely awesome. A gazillion places to park with any size rig, but probably gets pretty sloppy when it rains. Biting flies were in full force.

Mosquitoes!! V2

I can’t see my previous, but I said I would edit if we stayed (due to mosquitoes) but we did.

The sky was amazing! And that’s with a hazy day. So if night skies are important to you, and you can tolerate some mosquitoes then try this place out.

Quiet and easy

Easily accessible and quiet. Large enough to find a spot away from anyone. There probably is ATV here sometimes, but none while we were here.

Baja dispersed

A great place to stay the night while visiting Badlands NP. Super close to the park and Interior, SD. We were able to find a secluded place near the entry to the front gate and we were not disturbed by OHVs entering the Baja area in the morning.

Boondocking near Interior SD

Seemed like a less popular spot then the northern dispersed camping, but it was a really sweet stop after a sick drive thru the Badlands. A really big area, beautiful view of the peaks to the north, and relaxing moo's from the local cows.
