The area is large. Campers consistently note that the sheer size of the zone makes it easy to find a spot well away from other groups, even during busier summer weekends.
Road conditions are the most important variable here. The access track is unimproved dirt, and after rain it turns slick fast. One reviewer learned this the hard way with a large rig and received tow quotes starting at $320 from a company in Kadoka. A gravel section near the entrance provides firmer footing, and that's the safest place to park if there's any moisture in the forecast. Drier conditions open up the broader area to most vehicles, and Jackson M. notes that "some mellow spots allow non high clearance cars to get around."
Insects are a recurring theme across multiple visits. Mosquitoes and biting flies show up reliably through summer, so repellent is worth packing regardless of when you arrive. The trade-off, according to several reviewers, is night sky quality that holds up even on hazy days. Cell service is listed as available, and campfires are permitted. There are no toilets, water, or other infrastructure on site, so everything needs to come in with you.
Buffalo Gap National Grassland Dispersed near Hurley Butte sits a couple miles to the northwest for campers who want a comparable free option in the same general corridor. The SD-240 Roadside Pullout near Badlands NP Interior Entrance is another nearby alternative with quick highway access. Note that pets are not permitted at the Baja Area site, and fall visits, when insects thin out and the atmosphere clears, tend to draw the most consistent praise from reviewers.
Description
There is only one small developed recreation area on the Buffalo Gap National Grassland. The National Grassland Visitor Center is located in Wall, South Dakota. This site provides the history behind the system of the National Grasslands located across the West.
While there is only one developed campground, there are plenty of open spaces to camp. Bring your horse, your bicycle or your OHV and spend some quiet time in the wide open spaces of the Grassland.
Overnight camping in developed sites is on a first-come, first-served basis. Campfires are allowed unless restrictions are posted. Red Cloud Campground site features 13 sites with picnic tables and fire grates, and a vault toilet. From Chadron, NE travel eight miles south of on U.S. Highway 385 to the campground.
Backcountry, dispersed or primitive camping (no facilities) is allowed anywhere on the National Forest.
