Nice

Camping area near Mount Rushmore. I was able to find a camping area without a problem. The road does have some bumps in it but overall you do not need a four-wheel drive. The spot I camped at I was able to have decent Verizon signal however the area is a bit spotty for Verizon. The area seems to not allow for campfires. Trails nearby. One Trail is gated off and seems to mainly be a horse trail. Some of the camping spots seem to support larger vehicles. Also had a good view.

Great spot

This area seems to be pretty popular as it's close to Mount Rushmore and right off a main road but it's a nice, quiet area. Really enjoyed my stay here.

Road gets a bit rough once you get to the hill. Camp fires are not permitted.

Quiet open space

Nice area, very wide open, 7 minutes from Mount Rushmore, but be careful if you have a small car, there are only 3 spots before the road starts to get very inaccessible without a 4x4. Also, campfire not allowed (I think) but looked like everybody was doing one (we did).

Flat, we didn’t run into any wildlife, and easy to set up a tent !

Secluded, beautiful

I absolutely loved camping here. I was in the second site in, and the road was totally fine getting there. All of the big dips and whatnot could be driven around, but I'm not sure about going further in than that.

The views were incredible, and it was secluded from other sites but not so much so that you're completely isolated if something bad were to happen. I felt very safe here as a female solo camper. I barely had some Verizon service - I could get the occasional text to send through but not much more than that. Also it wasn't buggy at all which was a huge plus!

Secluded, Excellent

I followed the road quite a ways down and found a spot up a hill on the east side. Pretty rough road, truck or awd won’t have a problem. Very pretty and serene. Saw a couple side by sides, quiet otherwise. Zero Verizon signal for me.

Beautiful, serene,

Located minutes from the mt Rushmore monument, beautiful sites spaced well amongst the trees. Definitely advise 4x4 if it’s been wet at all, the trail is a doozy at times. Lots of fun if your vehicle is equipped for it though! Would love to return.

Solitude

It was kinda hard to make it this far into the forest, due to some deep ruts in the road, but once here... It's sooooo peaceful.

Love

This place was really fun! We found a great spot off the road to hangout for a few days that had a great view of mountains! Everyone along this trail seemed nice and trustworthy. People were able leave their sites and come back later with nothing missing. Only hard part about staying here would be the road- it was very worn down and after a rain/hail storm(everything was okay after!) there were big puddles everywhere. Tents were flooded and had to dry out in the sun the next day. No problems with a jeep wrangler but pulling a camper would be difficult.

Excellent spot

Close enough to civilization to be able to get stuff. Removed enough from civilization to feel free from the city. Camping spots are secluded and private. There are no facilities so pack water and toilet paper.

Beautiful and Secluded!

Stayed at the first site. Very secluded with maybe 2 other campers in the area. Need 4 wheel drive past first couple sites since roads are rough. Otherwise a great spot to stay. We had a some service on phones with Verizon and T-Mobile.

Secluded but need 4WD/High Clearance

Some motorcyclists made it through using the SW entrance. Definitely need high clearance for the NE part of the road. Got a really nice secluded spot. Had cell service!

Nestled in trees and rock outcrops

We stayed at the 1st turn out we came across, so cant say what the rest of the sites were like. Gravel road was good driving in, but a large dip getting into site (photo 1) Our 24ft camper leveled easily, with no checks, and behind us was a level grassy patch (photo 2) where you could easily have a 4man tent. Site was clean, so nice to see people pack in / out. Sun from sun up, to about 1hr before sunset. Super quiet.

High clearance 4wd highly recommended

Nice remote location. Camped on a pass just before 4x4 road decended. Plenty of fresh wildlife signs. They'll be around by dawn. Drove in with lifted 4x4 hightop sprinter 144. Anything longer will have issues.

SiteNot marked but level spot at the pass.

Great stay

We stayed in the first lot as you drove in, backed all the way up into a nice secluded spot. No bathrooms, but Wrinkled Rock parking lot had a bathroom just down the road. Amazing free spot so close to the monument.

Beautiful but scary road!

We drove down this road and found a nice area to sleep for a night. The road to get in was very rocky and steep! We decided to go out a different way and it was even worse then the way in. Luckily our promaster van was able to get us out safely. I definitely recommend a high clearance vehicle for this road.

Fantastic dispersed camping.

Literally dozens of good dispersed camp sites along this rough road.  Amazing find so close to Mt Rushmore.  Elevation is about 5500 feet.  I camped in November and the water bottle in my tent froze.  In the morning it was only  a 10 minute drive to the memorial.  With the sun in my eyes it was too late when I saw the deer.  (:-(

Good Off Grid Camping

A nice easy access forest service road with areas that have been used enough to resemble camping areas. The road goes a ways and branches off so I’m sure you’d be able to find something to suit your needs as we did.

Secluded Area near Mt Rushmore

Thanks to the first reviewer, I was able to find this campsite after showing up to the Black Hills and all campsites were booked.

A great retreat from the tourism, but still close enough to run to store and all attractions. No phone service out here so mark the location. A few campsites along the gravel road, all dispersed.

No fires (reason for the 4 star rating since it got cold at night) but was so secluded we were able to leave our things while we went and climbed and fished.

Epic Dispersed Camping Minutes from Mount Rushmore

Lucked into this spot on a recent visit to the Black Hills and liked it so much I stayed for three nights.

No services, but a quick drive into town or down to Horse Thief Lake.

Great sunsets from some of the nearby rock outcroppings!
