No one can visit Mitchell without seeing the world's only Corn Palace. Established in 1892 and at its present location since 1921, the structure is stripped each year and decorated anew with murals formed by thousands of bushels of corn, grasses, grains and other products celebrating South Dakota's bounty. The Corn Palace is mentioned in the book 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die. At the Dakota Discovery Museum, see historic American Indian beadwork and quillwork. Stop by the nearby Cabela's, just minutes away. Then return to your comfortable campground with Tent Sites, Camping Cabins and RV Sites up to 70 feet long. A pool, mini golf and bike rentals keep kids happy. After a stay here, you'll be rested and ready for the road.

A popular destination for boaters, paddlers, and water skiers, Lake Vermillion is a 512-acre artificial reservoir on the East Fork of the Vermillion River. Both the river and the lake are named for the red quartzite stone found along the river’s banks. Lake Vermillion is popular with area anglers for its abundance of walleye, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. Two boat ramps provide easy access for fishing on the lake, as well as putting in other recreational watercraft. There are plenty of onshore activities at Lake Vermillion as well, with various sports fields, horseshoe pits and a short nature trail, all located within the lake’s camping and picnic areas. The year-round campground at Lake Vermillion, just 30 minutes west of Sioux Falls, features more than 90 tent and RV campsites in three areas, on the northwest and northeast shores of the lake. Most sites are equipped with electrical hookups, and all include picnic tables with sun shades, and fire pits with grills. There are also four rustic, walk-in tent sites, two ADA accessible sites, and seven camping cabins. All camp areas have water faucets, and access to flush restrooms, vault toilets, and showers; a dump station is located near the campground entrance. The West Campground also has a kid’s play area, picnic area, swim beach and fishing dock. Campsite rates are $17–$21/night, plus entrance fee; cabins are $45/night.

    Corsica City Campground

    Just off US 281.

Much Semi traffic, so it's been kind of noisy (right next to highway). Fire pits full of junk. Good overnight stay. Sites have 30-20 amp service only.

    Stickney City Park

    Great stop over site.

I was here on a Wednesday night. Only one other person here. Very quite location. They have 2 sites that offer 30-20 amp service and short pads. 3 sites have 50-30-20 amp boxes. Well mowed, no litter. Right next to town.

    Mitchell KOA

    One of the better KOAs

Well-maintained facilities, the team was very friendly and helpful, and the location provides easy access to I-90 and downtown Mitchell. It's a great spot to spend a couple of nights recharging if on a long trip-- the 24-hour laundry room is a nice touch for that. Or use it as your base to check out the world-famous Corn Palace. The sites and roads have plenty of room to maneuver in and out of and if you don't book a site with sewer, the dump station is easily accessed. Also, even though you're close to I-90 and the campground is on SD 38, you don't really hear road noise so it's quiet for sleeping.

    Stickney City Park

    Pleasant

Easy to locate. Turn into city park. Five total campsites. The first two are in the right, directly on the road into park. The other three are further down on left. They are a larger area. Directly across from a football field and track. It is a suggested $20 a night.

    Hidden Gem Campground

    Wide open spaces. 1-605-481-1741 reservations.

This is a relatively new campground. Trees are young but hold promise. Lawn care is immaculate. Sites are level gravel pads. 15 - 30 - 50 amp service. Water, sewer, and WIFI at each site. There are 71 sites to choose from. This campground can be found on Facebook. There are no showers or bathroom facilities at the campground. Payment can be made at the bar just north of the campground sites. Also, volleyball, pizza, and chips at full bar can be enjoyed. There are no fire pits, but you may use your own fire pit if it is contained.

    Lake Mitchell Campground

    Great overnight stop

This is a nice campground for an overnight on the way to Custer. It’s a Bono’s the freeway, so there’s none of that noise, just some from the main road. Sites are level and well marked, although somewhat small. Most have full hookups, and there’s a nice tent area. Very friendly host. Older bathroom/shower, but it was very clean. Had some hiking trails that weren’t super maintained, and the lake in Augusta was green with algae. Overall would stay here again if we need a short stay.

    Lovely campsites along the lake

Nice swim area, pretty campsites, especially the tent areas that sit high over the lake and have pretty views of the water. Nice bathrooms and park. Very friendly park host, she came and introduced herself and welcomed us quickly.

Menno Lake Camping - Huber Campground

Quiet peaceful spot on the lake

Excellent find and with electricity for only $10 a night. Pretty secluded with only one other camper. Some local traffic. Vault toilet withTP is far from where we camped and the old school toilets were a little too sketchy for me. If they were cleaned up I would have been brave enough to try. Such a beautiful place! Bugs are bad! Be prepared. Each site has picnic table and fire ring on nice concrete pad.

    Free location

    Olivet Park

Flood waters have ravished this park

There is little left of this park. After each spring flood, they clean it up, but there is not much there any longer. They do have 15 and 30 amp connections in one location. Pit toilet remains destroyed due to floods. In the back corner of the park is a large area to turn around in and set up a short stay camp.

A boat ramp is available. A short walking trail is also available.

This is located next to a busy highway, and it is noisy with traffic much of the time we were there.

    Lake Carthage Lakeside Use Area

    We stayed overnight here

2 fire pits. 1 porta-potty. Open area you can camp anywhere. No water, no electric, no dump station, no potable water.

Town is 2 miles away, and they have a free dump station. Town also offers free showers. The laundry mat is available next to showers.

One mile out of town is a paid campground at the Lake Carthage campgrounds.

In town at the city park is a paid campground ss well.

    Beautiful little park

Great little city park. Showers/ restrooms were clean. I'm not sure how many sites in total. I know 5 were concrete slabs, the rest gravel. It's a little confusing in price/ paying. There is a box that says $10 donation. A sign that says $15 donation. The donations go towards the park.

    Wonderful Campground

Reserved a spot at Dakota Campground the day before arrival. Reservation was a snap to make, and the price was outstanding. Full service pull through sites fully shaded. The next morning, when hitching up trailer had a problem with my hitch mechanism. The owner, Josh was so helpfull in assisting me with repairs and even made a custom part for the hitch. He got us in the road and his help and generosity was greatly appreciated. I would highly recommend Dakota Campground.

    Clean but bad water

It was an easy drive -thru . Well kept up . But the water is bad there . We use a filter on our water hose . It still messed up our faucets and toilet. Inside the filter was a bunch of black stuff in it . We had problems with the toilet for the rest of our 2 week trip . Don't think I would stay there again.

We just picked up our teardrop and this was our first stay on the way home. They could not have been more friendly and helpful. We got lucky making this our first. Bathrooms immaculate. Site level. Downwind from the cows wasn't always great but it got better. Definitely would stay again.

    Twin Lakes Campground

    Great camp next to lake.

It was a bit out of the way from the interstate. Even passed one 4 way intersection in the middle of nowhere where I'm pretty sure you could make a deal with the devil. Lol. Camp had plenty of spaces, most with fire rings. Vault toilets. Lake was beautiful and boating was common. Saw some watersports, lost of people fishing from boats. And the most spectacular morning of watching the flocks of birds diving at the water to get food with the morning colors in the background I've ever seen. So don't miss that early morning coffee to see that show. Only problem we had, was it was near cow and horse pasture and there was literally poo on the road before camp. Being so close to that, the flies were the worst we have ever experienced in our lives. While we did stay 2 nights for free, we had to sit inside our bug canopy and still had to have a fly deterrent (swatters, hand towel, whatever) to even manage. Tip: cook outside your bug canopy, or you draw the bugs inside your canopy. All said, a great camp minus the bugs which may or may not be the case when you go. Also, there isn't much fuel to be had in the area, so be sure to have plenty of gas before you head that way.

    Good stop in an emergency

We were headed home from visiting our kids in Spokane and blew an engine on I-90. The tow truck driver helped up find this place, and towed both our Jeep and travel trailer 80 miles to get here. The manager helped us find a repair shop that only needed 3 days to find and replace the engine. This campground has lots of RV and tent sites. They have a pool, and mini golf. Mitchell is home to the Corn Palace. If you haven’t been there don’t go!

Best KOA we’ve been at. The bathrooms are colorful and the shower benches are nice and the showers are rain shower heads. It was raining and the bathrooms were dry and clean. The shop was well stocked with needs and wants. We almost adopted the stray cat there too. Good luck Mr Fuzzy Popcorn!

Employee all but kicked the door down on me.

The electrical boxes are so buggy and cobwebby and dusty that it's hard to find a properly grounded working electric box.

The women's bathroom is designed to be a single stall bathroom with shower, but the lock doesn't even hold the door shut properly bc the wood of the door frame is gouged out where the sliding bolt goes for the door. Had to prop my cane up under the door. An employee barged right in and acted offended when I mentioned someone was in there ... ??

Small, nice campground. It worked fine for our 42 ft 5th wheel. We stopped at Corn Palace which is basically a sports arena and did not take long. There is a playground at the campground for the kids. I did not rate it 5 stars because it does not have a Lot of amenities.

    Beautiful + quiet

This is just off the highway, but you wouldn’t know it when you’re in the rig. Super quiet and the owners were so sweet. They spaced us out with a beautiful pull through and plenty of room. They also gave us treats for the pups and cookies for us. Nice little thoughtful dog park with water and toys. Sunflowers right there for you to enjoy. The flies were definitely out, so had to manage getting in and out of the rig quickly as a few got in.

    We’d definitely stay again.
