All about Location

The spot is bare bones, just a place to pull off and set up camp but the location to Custer State Park and Sylvan Lake is hard to beat when it’s free. The road to the sites further in is rutted up in spots and could be sloppy after a rain.

so peaceful

we stayed one night, sunday before memorial day. we had such a peaceful relaxing night. nobody was here when we arrived but eventually one fellow stayed at the first site. theres only a few sites, i would say about 3. it looks like there used to be a road going higher but it was completely destroyed. you could fit 2 cars and tents at the upper sites and probably 1-2 at the lower site right off the road. the short road up isn’t great, but my awd with moderate clearance volkswagen suv did totally fine. lots of trees around which was nice but it had such a great view from the upper site where we stayed. reviews and pictures didn’t look great so i was skeptical but we really just needed somewhere free to stay for the night. obviously no water bathrooms or fire but no problem. it was chilly at night but wasnt windy at all. we saw several turkeys when we arrived, no coyotes while we were here but im sure they roam the area. at night there were plenty of bugs but actually we saw a lot of bats that were helping take care of the problem! theres quite a few rocks with hangings behind the upper sites so the bats may live here. if that doesn’t bother you than this is the place! shockingly it was the quietest campsite ive ever stayed at! right off the road but no one is driving these windy roads at night. it was loud in the morning due to all the bird songs but even that was peaceful. not the best campsite ive ever been at but i thought it was perfect for what we needed with good views! i would still stay here again. so close to everything in custer state park!happy camping!

Easy Campsite with Close Proximity

We had the whole area to ourselves on a Monday night in July. The road to get up to the higher sites was a big rough, but the Tacoma handled it no problem! Gorgeous view from the upper right road with a flat site. It was also only 10 minutes to trailheads in Custer St Park.

2 main locations.

The location by the road has a pull-through and could fit a decent size camper. Get there early as it's taken most nights . The road leading up the hill has been washed out, but I was able to make it up and down relatively easy with a 2wd Tacoma. I filled in some of the worst holes to help. Top spot has an amazing view and rock fire pit.

Good location

Nothing special, but the location is good ! Stayed at the first spot when you pull in because I didn’t want to take my sedan up either bumpy hills. Would recommend 4wd for any site other than 1

Spacious, Private, and Close To Black Elk Peak

This spot is perfect for anyone looking to spend time at Sylvan Lake or hike Black Elk Peak. We are about 10 minutes from all of that! The spot is large and easily accommodates our truck and 35' travel trailer. There is enough tree cover to allow you to have privacy too!

Nothing special but great location

This is a quick pull-off from Needles Hwy. Tucked behind the trees a bit. Nothing special but gets the job done. I suggest staying here if you plan to hike Black Elk Peak the next morning as it's only a 5min drive. No Verizon cell service.
