A pull-off along Needles Highway, this free dispersed site in Black Hills National Forest amounts to roughly three rough-cut spots tucked behind a screen of trees, with a lower site right off the road and two upper sites reached by a rutted track. The lower spot works for sedans. The upper sites require AWD or a truck with decent clearance, and the road can get sloppy after rain. No water, no restrooms, no fire rings at most spots, though the uppermost site has a rock fire pit.
The upper sites reward the extra effort with open sightlines across the surrounding hills and enough tree cover to feel removed from the highway. Weeknight crowds tend to be light. Several reviewers arrived to find the area empty, and the road sees little traffic after dark. Jenna G. notes it was "shockingly the quietest campsite I've ever stayed at." Turkeys, bats, and birdsong in the morning are commonly reported. No Verizon cell service.
The location is the main draw. Trailheads in Custer State Park are roughly ten minutes out, and Black Elk Peak is a short drive for hikers planning an early start. Campers wanting full hookups or more amenities can find those at Horse Thief Campground and RV Resort, a short distance north, or at the Hill City/ Needles HWY KOA nearby.
