    Custer Trail

    Basic, quiet, & beautiful

    A great home base for exploring the area, or taking time to slow down & enjoy Deerfield Lake.

    The lake is a no wake zone, making it perfect for paddling, fishing, and relaxing.

    This campground is barebones- park & walk to tent sites, buy firewood before you get there, don't expect to shower here. Off season (from September to May) camping is free! It's also quite cold during this time. Bring extra blankets.

    There's no marked swimming beach here, and I can't wholeheartedly recommend swimming anyway; the little cove I tried was a bit mucky, though the water itself is clear. You might find nicer splashing on the lake's other side, closer to Gold Run. 

    Check the website before you go; as of May 2026 the water was shut off. You might need to bring in all of your own.

    all the tent sites are nicely in the woods but the main road goes pretty close to them. has some pretty decent trails too. shower house is very nice

    Once you get to the space in the pictures very open & beautiful. Road coming in directly was very rough and had large rocks, would recommend a vehicle with clearance unless you take the other way. Only saw one other vehicle and there are nearby residents.

    Black Hills National Forest Dutchman Campground

    Lovely forested spot with lake views

    Dutchman's a great spot to be close (but not too close) to the lake. 

    I went in early may, towards the end of the off season. It was free, first come first, although most spots were full. The loop that's open during the off-season is pretty far from the lake, though it's visible in spots. Even in the closer loop, don't expect to be able to fish out of your tent. 

    Pit toilets and garbage are close by. There's a fishing dock & boat ramp maybe a three minute drive away. 

    It's very peaceful and secluded. Since Deerfield is a no-wake lake you won't be listening to jet skis, motor boats, etc. The pine stands are lovely and the air just smells like mountains.

    Disgusting

    There was dog crap all over the entire site. It was right next to the highway and trains were making noise all night. Someone emptied their RV toilet in the middle of the night and it smelled so bad I couldn’t sleep. People were loud

    Oasis Campground

    Not a wild place but great in a pinch

    Highway 90 is nearby and loud. I called ahead to reserve a tent site because I was going to arrive after dark. Camp host dude was friendly on the phone and in person. Plenty of showers and they are clean. I’d come back if I was in a bit of a rush again another time and wanted a place with showers + laundry. I spent 9 weeks driving west across the country & exploring, but only have 6 days to drive back east. This spot is convenient for many reasons: it is near the highway, it has showers, & laundry is onsite. $44 for a patch of grass with a picnic table and fire pit. Kinda expensive, but at least showers with no time limit are included. I’ll be taking another in the morning. I prefer to camp on National Forest land, rivers, oceans, wild places…but this place is fine. Maybe it’s called Oasis cus there’s a heated pool.
