Great camping 2 hours from Dallas

I visited the Shortleaf camping area in the Tyler State Park for the weekend to participate in a 50k trail race. Each campsite in this area has a sheltered cabin, picnic table, fire pit and 2 parking spots. Tent camping is also permitted on the site but I used my iKamper Roof Top Tent as my primary…

Barebones on purpose.

Set up your basic base camp near a picnic table and fire ring the. Go out into the park to hike, bike, horseback ride, frisbee golf, kayak and observe nature. The site itself is not attractive per-se but there are some basics and an outhouse. The park also has an RV/Equestrian trailer area near the…

Good swimming facilities

We camped for 1 night and swimmer during summer for a friends birthday. The area is marked clearly with a deck in the middle of water. This helps you take a nice swim with adequate rest at the other end. Fun place for kids.

Calm place for primitive camping

The camping isn’t primitive as such but it has campsites segregated by bushes, ensuring privacy. We went here both in summer and winter and found the facilities adequate.

Great weekend getaway!

Went here with the kids and my brother in law and his family. Was able to get 2 spots side by side right by the water park.

Kids loved every minute of our stay! Had plenty of things to keep them busy! Will be back soon!

Overnight Stop

This park is close to highway and great for overnight stay. The park has pull through full site hookups. The park has a pond that is the center of the entire campground. The park has two dog parks available as well for those traveling with pets.

Two things I loved:

  1. Close to highway quick…

Peaceful

This point is first come first serve, find any spot you like. Primitive camping. Restrooms have recently been torn down and are going to be rebuilt. It's a great spot for Kayaking and other water sports, or just relaxing in the water. Also, a great place to watch 4th of July fire works show put on…

It is what it is

I think we may have been placed in an alternate area available at Canton Marketplace. It was literally a pasture behind the Old Mill Marketplace aside of the "mountain" area of Canton Trade Days. We were so grateful to find a place - showing up for an overnight only on our way elsewhere - in the…

Nice, local stay!

This park is a nice local place to visit. It has full hookups and the sites are extremely distanced from one another which is great. The main thing to do here is to boat or fish, however the platforms are extremely in disrepair - literally falling into the lake (see photo of us trying to load the…

  • Beautiful access to the lake.
  • Beautifully spaced sites, but extremely unlevel front to back.
  • Partially submerged platforms made things unsafe and difficult to load the kayak.

Beautiful camping spot

Purtis Creek State Park This was a very small park but it was quiet and peaceful. The primative sites are a .6 mile walk. The park office recommended site E because it was harder for people to see you if they are walking on the trail. It was a fantastic spot!
