This free dispersed campground operates as a highway rest area with overnight camping allowed along State Highway 207. The paved parking area accommodates RVs and provides level spots for car camping, though tent camping options remain limited to small grassy sections. Two covered picnic tables, grills, and trash service make this more developed than typical dispersed sites.
The location sits on elevated ground overlooking Palo Duro Canyon, with views extending across the canyon system. "Stayed at this picnic area without expecting too much, but it was beautiful," notes Nikki B.. Wind consistently gusts through the area, particularly at night. Campers report occasional late-night visitors who arrive for stargazing and depart within hours.
The site functions as both a rest stop and camping area, creating mixed usage patterns. Day visitors pass through regularly, though positioning vehicles thoughtfully can provide privacy from road view. No restrooms or water sources exist on-site. Cell service reaches the area reliably. The fenced perimeter contains the camping zone within a compact footprint that could accommodate roughly half a dozen moderately-sized rigs when full.
Access requires careful navigation, as some GPS systems provide incorrect directions leading to nearby rural roads rather than the actual overlook. Google Maps through The Dyrt app provides accurate routing. The packed gravel surface handles most RV sizes without difficulty. Temperatures can drop significantly overnight, with recorded lows reaching the upper twenties during winter months.
Campers seeking a more traditional campground experience might consider Palo Duro Canyon Lookout, located just west of this highway pullout.
