North Area Primitive Site - Colorado Bend State Park 

San Saba River RV Park

Colorado Bend State Park is one of central Texas’s most popular destinations. Two hours northwest of Austin, this park offers cave tours, river recreation, and over 35 miles of hike and bike trails. Visit in the off-season and enjoy a break from the intense Texas heat or take a dip in the cool, clear waters of Spicewood Springs for a refresher on warmer days.

Texas’s tallest waterfall, Gorman Falls, is the prime attraction for visitors of Colorado Bend State Park. This 70-foot marvel can be reached from a moderate 3-mile hike where you can enjoy cool mist from the spring-fed waters upon your arrival. 

There are 15 drive in campsites at Colorado Bend where you can park RVs up to 30 feet, though the rest require some extra work to reach. 28 walk-in campsites can be found in the main campground, as can two primitive group campsites near the river. Looking for even more rugged seclusion? Hike to the Backcountry Windmill area where you will find designated backcountry sites just a mile from the trailhead. Every camper will find what they need at Colorado Bend State Park.

South Padre Island Beach is open to camping from Beach Access #5 and Beach Access #6 to any point north. During the on season Padre Island camping access by vehicle is $12 to enter, regardless of the length of stay. Offseason is free (from autumn until spring break). The first several miles are accessible by 2 wheel drive vehicles and RV’s. Miles 5-24 usually accessible by 4x4 only. Fires, pets, and fishing are allowed. There are no amenities, cell service can be spotty, and it is recommended to be aware of tides and weather conditions. The beach is patrolled by beach patrol and sea turtle patrol, and it is a favorite destination for windsurfing and dolphin watching. There is a large dumpster at the beach access to empty trash on leaving, and showers/restrooms at Beach Access #5.



Edwin King Atwood Park

Copperas Creek Campground sits along Proctor Lake in the Cross Timbers Region of Texas. The area appeals to sportsmen, birders, naturalists or those simply wanting to relax in the outdoors. Natural Features: Large grassy areas dotted with black willow trees and buttonbush characterize the campground. Shade is sparse, but lake views are plentiful. Recreation: Fishing is Proctor Lakes main draw; anglers enjoy the lakes tremendous populations of bass, shad and crappie. The lake is also recognized as one of the best hybrid striped bass lakes in the state. Boating and swimming are popular activities on the water as well, and boat ramps and docks provide easy lake access for visitors. The surrounding wildlife areas at Proctor Lake provide ample hunting opportunities for game like duck, dove, hog and other small game animals. High Point Park, located just 2 miles from the campground, offers more than 10 miles of of hiking and equestrian trails. Facilities: This year-round campground offers 67 family sites and two group sites, all with electric hookups. Amenities include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station, creating a comfortable camping environment for visitors.
