Visited this campground Sept 2026. Summer of 2025 a wildfire burned all the way up one side of the Green River valley. The campground was spared, probably due to heroic efforts by wildland firefighters. It's in one little wedge of green forest in the midst of crispy brown burned forest. The other side of the lake and valley were untouched.
Aside from the burn scars, the setting is beautiful with the broad valley of the Green River and the ridges and mountains, in particular Squaretop Mountain visible to the south.
The campground is somewhat battered from post-fire flooding and runoff. There is mud and charcoal mud washed across the roads and through many of the sites. The CG roads are rutted and have deep potholes; just take it slow. There are many sites that are still in decent shape though. Sites have picnic table, fire ring, and bear box. There aren't tent pads, but some sites are suitable for tents. There are several pull-through sites. The vault toilets are ok. The log cabin ones are pretty dark inside, due to having very small windows. There was no water available when i was there.
Trailhead parking for the CDT is less than 1/2 mile from the CG. It filled up most days I was there. It's nice to hike south along the lake. There are a few destination options for day hikers. I had planned to hike the loop around the lake, but the whole west (?) side was burned so I didn't go there; I just went to the upper lake and back. I saw a person catch a large fish out of the lake.
No cell service. As people have noted, the road from the snowmobile staging area to the CG is rough. Clearance is not a problem, but there is a combination of deep unavoidable potholes, washboard, and rocky road bed. I encountered a few deep mudholes on the way in, but they had dried up when I left a few days later. It took about 1 1/2 hrs to get there, towing a small camper. I aired down the camper tires to soften the ride a little but it's just dang rough and slow going. Make sure you have plenty of gas and supplies.
I tried going here one time in July but the mosquitos were just too much! In September I encountered few bugs at all.
