Wind often sweeps across the open terrain at Wheatland Reservoir #1, where dispersed camping sites spread along the shoreline of this man-made reservoir. The access road follows a bumpy two-track route that circles the water, leading to multiple camping spots with room for both tents and larger RVs in some areas.
Cottonwood trees provide shade at several sites, though campers should expect exposure in this high plains setting. The reservoir's water levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting both the available camping area and shoreline access. Fish splash along the water's edge, drawing bow fishermen and anglers. Cat R. notes "plenty of spots around the water" with "lots of trees for shade."
A vault toilet sits near the boat launch area, requiring a short drive from most camping spots. Cell service reaches two bars on Verizon networks. The gravel road around the reservoir handles most vehicles, though wet conditions can create challenges. Campers often have the area largely to themselves, though local visitors do use the recreation area. For those needing full hookups or additional amenities, Mountain View Park and Lewis Park offer developed camping options.
This free camping area works well for self-sufficient campers comfortable with basic facilities and variable weather conditions.
