The rocky access road sets the tone early. Taylor Ranch Road Dispersed Camping sits within Teton National Forest near campgrounds near Kelly, where a short drive down a rough, rocky track leads to two or three sites along a river. Reviewers in high-clearance vehicles and at least one Prius have made it through, though the uneven terrain means sites are not particularly level. No fees, no amenities, and no cell service on Verizon or AT&T.
Water is the defining feature here. Sites sit directly on the river, and the current runs loud enough that reviewers consistently note the sound as a constant presence in camp. One spot has a sandy beach suitable for tents, though the mix of sand and rocks underneath makes for an uneven sleeping surface. A large rock near the lower fire pit has served as a makeshift kitchen table, and a few hammock-worthy trees round out the larger site. Foxes have been spotted along the riverbank by multiple campers.
Crowd patterns are worth noting. Peak season brings cars parked along the road and competition for the limited spots, with other visitors occasionally passing through occupied sites. Richard C. notes "there are 2-3 good spots for tents" in the main area, with additional sites accessible after crossing the river. Nearby alternatives include Gros Ventre River Road Dispersed — Teton NF and Atherton Creek Campground for those who arrive to find the spots taken. Rangers have been known to stop by to discuss bear precautions. This site works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with rough roads and no services.
Description
The Slide Lake Boating Site is a small, beautiful lake access point, ideal for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and other non-motorized watercraft. It is located down the Taylor Ranch Road, a spur off the main Gros Ventre Road that winds down through aspen stands and large boulders from the Gros Ventre Slide. There are several small parking spots amongst the willows, aspens and large boulders, directly adjacent to the lake and a small beach. A small sandy trail leads down to the beach, located near the lake’s outlet and offers great access to the lake’s western shores. There are no facilities located on site, although dispersed and fee campgrounds are located nearby. Parking is limited and tight and does not have ample space for trailer turnaround. No cellular service is available.
