Thirteen miles west of Laramie, Twin Buttes Reservoir sits on open BLM land where wind patterns dominate the camping experience. This dispersed camping area centers around a large gravel parking lot with vault toilets and scattered picnic tables, accommodating RVs up to 50 feet. The completely treeless terrain offers no wind protection, leading multiple campers to describe intense gusts that rock vehicles throughout the day and night.
The reservoir draws anglers and bird watchers, with eagles and waterfowl frequently spotted along the shoreline. Cell coverage varies by carrier and location—Verizon users report better signal when facing town rather than the water. The clay soil becomes slippery when wet, requiring caution during rainy conditions. Several campers note the area works well for single-night stops but isn't suited for extended stays due to exposure and wind intensity.
Vault toilets are distributed across the area, though campers should bring their own toilet paper. Summer visitors encounter biting flies and potential algae blooms that may limit swimming appeal. Hunter B. found it "very windy" but noted the area "seems to be a popular area for fishing." The campground provides free overnight parking for travelers crossing Wyoming, particularly those comfortable with exposed, windy conditions.
