Snake River Dispersed - Rockefeller Memorial Parkway

The sound of the Snake River flowing past campsites creates a constant backdrop along this dispersed camping area accessed via Grassy Lake Road. Located just outside Yellowstone's south entrance within John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, this National Park Service-managed area offers eight designated sites spread along approximately 5.5 miles of maintained dirt road.

Each site comes equipped with a vault toilet, bear box, fire ring, and picnic table, with daily trash service provided by forest service staff. Charles C. notes the setup: "bear box, fire pit, picnic table, and FREE." Many sites accommodate larger RVs, though the dirt access road can become rough in sections. Site 6 stands out as an individual location with creek access, while sites closer to the main road see more traffic from campers searching for available spots.

Wildlife viewing opportunities abound along the route. Moose sightings occur regularly, and the river provides kayaking access from Yellowstone's boundary downstream to the campsites. The area serves as a launching point for exploring waterfalls at Yellowstone's south end. Cell service remains limited or nonexistent throughout most of the camping area.

Competition for sites intensifies during peak season, with Tee C. reporting driving "many miles down the well maintained dirt road trying to find a spot." Campers frequently arrive by afternoon to secure preferred locations. The nearby Flagg Ranch Campground - Grand Teton National Park — John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway provides an alternative with full hookups when dispersed sites fill up.

Plan to bring all water supplies, as the river serves as the only local source requiring treatment.

Many visitors highlighted the beautiful riverside sites with complete amenities and unbeatable free pricing between Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Some campers noted concerns about crowding and traffic from site-seekers, particularly in evenings.

Great views

The view was amazing. It was really easy to get back here. Got to listen to the river all night. All the “official” spots were taken but we found a pull off that did just fine!

Great camping site

We drove from west Yellowstone and arrived around noon. There were some camp sites available at camp site 1. It gets crowded at evening. The site is close to south entrance of Yellowstone and there is a restaurant nearby (less than a mile).

Fantastic dispersed camping appty

This is a fantastic spot. NFS calls the designated dispersed area “Grassy Lake Rd” as an FYI. 8 specific sites. We stayed in #6 for 4 nights. About 5.5 miles off main road - creek running behind the site. Each site has a pit toilet (site 6 is an individual site), trash, bear box, fire pit and picnic table. NFS stops by DAILY to empty your trash and clean the bathroom. Very kind and respectful - spoils you for sure! Would definitely come back to this spot. As to be expected camping in the wilderness, mosquitos were pretty heavy in early July. Also very close to (couple of miles) to the south entrance of Yellowstone.

Not Dispersed

Great spot for camping if you get there early and you don’t mind people driving by looking for spots at any hour. This area should not be advertised as dispersed camping, strict site camping with signs everywhere. We had to drive an hour+ up the road, requiring 4x4, to get to National Forest and legally camp. We slept in our car, uncomfortable with how much human traffic there was and the possibility of bears in camp. Make sure to properly store food, there are only site specific bear boxes after camp 1.

That being said, it was a beautiful drive out in the morning and was a convenient location between Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

No permit needed

This campground was nice. Bathroom is well kept and stocked. This one even had soap. We arrived around 6pm in our Winnebago van and there were still a few available spaces.

SiteThe sites seem to be marked with logs, to my knowledge there were no numbers on them.

Busy

Convenient to the south entrance of Yellowstone, this camping area was very busy. We ended up driving many miles down the well maintained dirt road trying to find a spot. Ended up at a little trailhead outside the boundaries of the park. Road got pretty rough. Overall, it’s a pretty area by the river. By the time we found a place to stop, I did not have cell service with Verizon. Basically, tons of camping spots, but very few available. Get there early !

Campsite 5 - only 1 space

Right between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. You don't have to share this spot with anyone. It comes with a bear box to store your food, a bear proof trash can, picnic table, metal fire ring, and last but not least, your own private pit toilet. Tons of space also.

Great Spot

Best campground view of our entire trip and neighbors let us squeeze into their spot because the sun was setting and we were desperate. It says there are only 5 sites but there's plenty of space for more!

Stayed right by the river on a full moon!

beautiful luna llena put us to sleep. Set up camp right by the river and slept to the sounds of the water flowing. "neighbors" were super friendly and welcoming. right in between yellowstone entrance and teton. Also super close to lodge/ visitors center (wasn't operating when we went) and little mart if you need anything.

beautiful spot!

Highly recommend

We really enjoyed camping here. Many campsite options, close to water, trash cans, bear boxes, and clean bathrooms at every site. No cell service. Beautiful view of the mountains. Roads were a little rough but definitely do able. Super close to Yellowstone and Tetons. The road was hard to find, you have to enter a camp first. Also it was free!

On the River, Just Outside of Yellowstone

Just outside of Yellowstone, right on the river, clean vault toilet, bear box, fire pit, picnic table, and FREE.

There are multiple campsites on Grassy Lake Road/Flagg Ranch Road just off of the John D Rockefeller Jr. Parkway connecting the Grand Tetons to Yellowstone. Many could accommodate larger RVs, though we were in a pop-up. The site was beautiful and I saw more moose driving to my campsite than I did driving through Yellowstone.

The river is beautiful and many campsites are right on its banks. My daughter and son Kayaked from Yellowstone’s south entrance to the campsite and had a blast.  I thought the waterfalls at the south end were the most beautiful in the park.  We spent days climbing and hiking around them.

There is no power or water other than the river. Water proved to be a problem for us, though with planning you could fill jugs up while in the park and we showered in the center of Yellowstone at Grant Village.

Several of the camp areas have multiple sites but many further up are single sites you would have all to yourself. Though it’s pseudo-wilderness camping, I would be tempted to pay handsomely for the privilege to be in a quiet campsite next to a beautiful river outside of Yellowstone…but it was FREE.

What are the rules and regulations for boondocking along Snake River?

Snake River Dispersed in Rockefeller Memorial Parkway offers designated dispersed camping with specific regulations. Camp only in marked sites with a maximum stay limit. Each site comes with a bear box (required for food storage), fire ring, picnic table, and vault toilet. Pack out all trash using the provided bear-proof trash cans. Camping is free, but sites are limited and fill quickly. Quiet hours are enforced, and responsible fire management is expected. The area is well-regulated with signs indicating proper camping areas, contrary to typical dispersed camping where you can camp anywhere.

The location is ideal for day trips, being perfectly situated between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Water activities like swimming or wading in the river are popular during warmer months. Stargazing is exceptional due to minimal light pollution. There's also a restaurant less than a mile away if you want a break from camp cooking. Note that there's no cell service, making it perfect for a digital detox.
