    Hoffmaster State Park Campground

    Top fav

    After eyeballing this campground all year and waiting for a cancellation, we finally got to visit.

    Yes, it was the most densely packed campground we’ve ever been to. I have never seen this many cars at a campground before. But somehow, despite the sold out weekend, it just didn’t feel that crowded. Neighbors were kind, kids were running all over the place, and it just felt like a big community. It gave us that 90s summer vibe where kids roamed around and you just walked over and spoke to a neighbor.

    Quiet times are pretty adhered to. Most sites were lights out by 10pm.

    The walk to the beach is really manageable even with folding chairs and a cooler. And despite it being sandy, bring a bicycle if you want to! There was a review that said leave the bikes behind and our kids were sorely disappointed when we discovered 85% of the path to the beach was paved.

    Shower house was the second cleanest facility we’ve ever experienced! For how busy it was, it the crew did a really fantastic job. Camp hosts also had activities and coffee hour which was a huge hit.

    We’ve already decided that we would come back here again. Our kids absolutely loved it.

    French Farm Lake Rd

    Perfect

    There are no picnic tables or privies but if you can get past that this place has everything for people who like primitive camping and scenic places. Almost no mosquitoes. No development around the lake. Can just barely hear traffic. We were confused when we got here about where to get a camp card but we got ahold of someone who manages the trail and he said just to make up your own card. There is some trash. We cleaned some of it up including an old tent in site 6. Listen to loons. We heard a bobcat and caught the sound on video. Best running trails.

    East Jordan Tourist Park

    Family friendly

    It is a pretty nice camp ground. The spaces are small and neighbors are really close. But we are close to water spirt rentals. Nice beach on beautiful Lake Charlevoix. Playground is big and fun for kiddos. The shower rooms are dated and old, but seem clean. We will be back for sure. The pros outweigh the cons

    Turtle Lake Campground

    RV park not great for tent camping

    Cute RV park, mostly people set up to stay the summer. Called ahead, was offered a “lake view” site for an extra $10. Arrived, site was at the very front, between two roads, like sleeping in a fishbowl. We were across a road and grassy patch and canoe storage from the lake. We could in fact see it, but lake view was really a stretch. Our site was at least two city blocks from a very small bath house. We camped on a site with no trees, no privacy and a hike to the shower room. Not recommended for tent camping.

    Widewaters Campground

    Isolated, big, and clean

    This was one of the nicer campgrounds I have been too. Very clean and spacious sites that offer a bit of privacy. Most sites have water access with a bench by the water. Will definitely be coming back!

    Cusino Lake State Forest Campground

    Nice and big but smelly

    Really nice campground with nice and big sites. All sites have water access most people had boats. Bathrooms are one of the most foul smelling bathrooms I have ever been in.

    Lake Superior Beachfront (US Forest Land)

    Beautiful area

    Great area, down a gravel road. Camp spots are identified with fire rings, and lots of space between. Port-a-potties were in need of emptying, but the beach area is easy to walk down to, there are beautiful trees, and it is so quiet at night!

    Crooked Lake Campsite — Hiawatha National Forest

    Isolated Dispersed Site on Crooked Lake

    The coupe was not built for “two track” roads, but it made the journey — mostly on faith and one very concerned suspension. Worth it, though, because I found the spot of my dreams: waterfront, secluded, the kind other campers dream about at night.

    I was ready to bail after hearing the pricing, one Google Maps U-turn from giving up entirely — until a sign pointed down a side road toward “Crooked Lake.” I followed it like it owed me money.

    And there it was. THE site. The coupe survived. Barely. Worth every dirt-road regret. Must reserve in advance, so the sign says.
