Lake Superior North Shore

Super peaceful spot with untouched, clean beaches that stretch for miles. In mid-November I had the entire place to myself — no mosquitos, no crowds, just the sound of the waves. Very quiet overall, with only light UTV traffic and the occasional person stopping by the beach for an hour or two.

Campsite Info: Only 2–3 campsites max. Very bare-bones: limited or no fire rings, no water, no bathrooms, no trash. Truly pack-in/pack-out camping.

Access: GPS got me close but not all the way — you need to continue about 1.5 miles past the “No Thru Traffic” sign. Road was fine for my skoolie. No Verizon service here, but Starlink worked great.

If you’re comfortable with zero amenities and want quiet, clean shoreline with tons of space, this place is perfect. Would absolutely stay again.

Pros: just steps from the shores of Lake Michigan. Near whitefish point. 4-5 sites.

Cons: about 2-3 miles down road of mosquito hatchery so you will get swarmed - only my late season (early sept) tour of UP, this was the only place I ran into heavy mosquitos and it was unbearable. Sites are closer than the pin shows and the furthest 2-3 are in deep sand/can’t be driven to on most vehicles.

Site was quite crowded when we arrived, with no suitable campsites for our van. You may have been able to go further and find a spot with four-wheel drive. However, if you go this way, do not miss the incredible Whitefish Point cemetery just off the road to the campsite.

Mosquito capital of the north, open truck door and 5 fly in immediately. Some people put tents on the beach which would have been nice but I sleep in the truck.

The beach is pretty but I would only come to this spot at night as a place to stay. The mosquitoes were ruthless from the moment we got there. Be sure to take W Wildcat Rd and not W Oak Ridge rd, as that road looks impossible to drive

Coordinates took us off to the left of the first junction, where there was a gate that said closed so we didn’t go to this site unfortunately! Continue straight instead

Mosquitos. There is a gazillion mosquitos here. Come here prepared with firewood and some repellent.

The site was really cool. There’s a gravel drive for car camping and smaller rigs. If you’ve got 4WD you can manage to get through the sand to the other sites which are pretty much all on the lake. Bring a bug hat and plenty of bug spray unfortunately it’s a hotbed for black flies and skeeters.

Visited the site in a winter storm. A little worried before getting on the wild cat road. Turned out no issue at all. Road is covered with heavy snow, no issue with an AWD camper van. Snow shoeing in the woods and alone the lake beach. Fantastic!

Absolutely gorgeous! Right on the lake, wouldn’t suggest driving all the way back just park and take all your stuff to your spot. There is a “no drive thru” sign ignore it and drive back the pathway you’ll find it 😍 two other campers there and they were lovely (they also found this place off the dyrt app). You truly can’t beat this place, we even seen the Northern lights

Great camping area. There is a sign that says “Closed To Thru Traffic”. Just keep driving. You will get there. Road is sandy and some parts pretty rutted so keep the vehicle moving. You are a 1 min walk to the beach area.

Some campers are pigs and leave their trash around so we had to tidy our site up a little.

Really is a beautiful place. We are here on the 20th of September 2023.

I think close to the camp we ran across some bear scat.

We love this spot! It’s super secluded and right on the beach. We’ve had one other tent camper out with us. We are in a small travel trailer, 22’, and there was room for our rig. There are a few spots with packed sand that are easy to drive in, but the middle path is pretty deep loose sand. When we came, there were other cars parked in the spots big enough for a camper, so we had to wait until they left. With cars parked in the bigger spaces, it was difficult to get out of the way or get turned around so we were just kind of stuck waiting. Also the mosquitos were also thick when we went. Overall we loved the spot, just wrote a review to give a few heads up!
