    Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park

    Typical Fairgrounds Campground

This is a typical fairground campground with open grassy areas for campsites surrounded by barns and tracks. The fairgrounds is located just off I-94 which makes for easy entrance and exit to the campground, but, means there is lots of road noise. Close by are plenty of stores, restaurants, gas stations, etc. In fact, there is a gap in the fence that runs around the fairgrounds allowing you to walk to a Walmart, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, and more.

We arrived without a reservation and the women in the office was very helpful providing a map with all available sites during our stay and letting us choose which one we wanted. One of the first things you notice is that a number of people are here long-term so we went to the back area hoping it would be quieter and less crowded. A number of the campsites are “buddy” sites meaning your patio opens to your neighbors so be careful which one you pick. This is pretty undesirable when the neighbor is a total stranger so we chose a site where we didn’t have anyone next to us.

They offer 50 amp full hook-up sites, 50 amp/water, and 30 amp/water sites with pull-thru and back-in options. There is a dump station located in the middle of the park which is easy to get to. The roads are wide and a lack of trees makes this campground accessible for any size RV. The sites are level but some lack grassy making the patio pretty dusty or muddy. Unfortunately, where we were was pretty muddy just after a light rain. This campground works best for RV’s and not tents. For tenters there is a designated section that is set in a corner of the park with large trees for shade but not much privacy between you and others. A water spigot is in the tent area and there was one picnic table. The camp office sells firewood but we only saw two fire pits in the whole park. Be aware that noise from the interstate and nearby train tracks may make for a restless night. Bathrooms are centrally located in the campground and were old and tired but relatively clean. On-site laundry is available.

Apparently, management is having some issues with campers not obeying some of the rules. One of the sad things about this campground is that campers have to be reminded to clean up after their dogs. Apparently, it is such an issue that we got a letter stating that if you don’t pick up your dogs poop you would be asked to leave. How sad is that? There is free WiFi which worked pretty well. Upon checking in, we had to sign a piece of paper stating that we would not download copyrighted material or stream movies or we would be asked to leave.

My favorite aspect of this campground is that they had a community garden that you were welcome to pick from. We got tomatoes, Swiss chard, peppers, broccoli, and more. Overall, this campground was fine for the few nights we were here and close to the attractions we wanted to visit. We never felt unsafe even though it was close to major cities. We chose this campground because we wanted to go to Ann Arbor and Dearborn and it was a very convenient location.

    Pros:

    ·        Good location if you want to visit Ann Arbor and Dearborn

    ·        Close to interstate for easy access

    ·        Long, level sites that will fit any RV

    ·        Community garden you can pick from vegetables

    ·        Stores and restaurants are nearby (some within walking distance)

    Cons:

    ·        Lots of road noise from I-94

    ·        No trees for shade or privacy

    ·        Would not recommend for tent camping

    ·        Many campers are long-term

    ·        “Buddy” campsites with patios facing each other

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

The State of Michigan has dropped the ball…

No sewer or dumps is available at this campground (April 2022). You will have to dump elsewhere. If there was a memo I missed it. Made reservation in winter 2021. Had great Verizon and ok TMobile service. Site itself was easy to level and adequate for our big rig. It was one of 4 50 amp sites in the park. Nice large grassy site and the park was not very full.

    Sterling State Park Campground

    Travel Trailers

This park will accommodate any size travel trailer? Fifth wheel camper of any kind, the pull throughs are huge. The park is enormous with lots of fishing activities. Great water, the only downfall is there's no shade. Showers and restrooms are updated and always clean.

    Groveland Oaks County Park

    Kid friendly

This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds. Full hookup area is away from most of the weekend traffic with a short cut to get to where all the kids stuff is located. I think it is a little pricier than most monthly rentals in southeast Michigan. We chose for the convenient location for spending the weekends. Our campsite was a little difficult to get into because it was on a curve and there was a seasonal camper with a Class A right across from our site which didn’t allow for a lot of space to maneuver our 26 ft travel trailer. It was, however, fairly close to the park and restrooms.

    Sterling State Park Campground

    Great spot!

Wonderful views from site 117. We booked the last spot of the night. It was an easy pull through with water, electric, and sewer hookup. You are right across from some good walking trails and walking distance to the beach. Lots of electric scooters, dogs, and bikes around.

    Wilderness Campground

    Great for kids

This is a great campground. There are a lot of things for kids to do including a swimming pond, playground, basketball, volleyball, and a catch and release fish pond. There are a couple pull through sites but most are back in and easily fit just about any rig. There are two bath houses and a dump station but no sewer. Awesome staff! Cabelas’s right down the street.

Bruin Lake Campground — Pinckney Recreation Area

    Bruin Lake Campground

Wonderful place even when it’s packed. Harder to get reservations over the years but always a great place to stay. Awesome bathrooms newly renovated. Nice spots. Mostly paved in the lower sites. Nice swimming area however no beach sand. Just a grassy area. Public boat launch on Bruin lake. Bruin lake connects to a few more lakes creating a nice chain of lakes. Half moon at the end of the chain is a great all sports lake. Awesome fishing. Sites have electric, no water. There is a dump station. Wood and ice available for purchase and a few vending machines. Nice hiking trails. They do have a few hike in yurts and hike in camping sites. Decent parking places for those hike ins.

    Hell Creek Ranch & Campground

Great, clean private campground with easy access to the state parks.

This was our first time staying here. Great private campground with rustic, elec, water/elec (30 amp), and concrete pad sites. Very clean campground with nice shower house. Owners are very friendly. Direct connections to the Waterloo Pinckney trail system. Near Hell, Michigan and Chelsea, Michigan. Large pool in season. Priced reasonably.

Guide to Detroit

RV parks near Detroit, Michigan offer sites from April through October with a few year-round options. These campgrounds sit within 30 miles of downtown in relatively flat terrain, making access straightforward for most vehicles. Weather conditions can be unpredictable in spring and fall, with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and occasional thunderstorms.

What to do

Lake activities at Proud Lake Recreation Area: Visitors can kayak on the Huron River which connects to Proud Lake. "Trails available here are where I learned to mountain bike, they're not the easiest but they are not so challenging that you won't have fun," notes a camper at Proud Lake Recreation Area.

Halloween celebrations: Camp Dearborn offers special fall events for families. According to a visitor, "Lots of beach area and water to fish or swim. Activities almost every night. Paddle boats, mini golf, golf, and more." Another camper mentions, "We've been in their tent/cabins and our own RV. Great park, clean, nice swimming lakes, the teens love the canteen."

Community gardens: Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park offers a unique opportunity for campers to harvest fresh produce. A reviewer appreciated this feature: "My favorite aspect of this campground is that they had a community garden that you were welcome to pick from. We got tomatoes, Swiss chard, peppers, broccoli, and more."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Multiple RV parks prioritize cleanliness, particularly at St. Clair RV Resort. One reviewer noted, "This place is beautiful and we'll absolutely be back! The entire facility was clean and staff couldn't have been friendlier." Another camper at Haas Lake Park mentioned, "The entire campground was well kept; the bathrooms, the grounds, and the laundry facility were all in good condition."

Family-oriented atmosphere: Harbortown RV Resort caters to families with multiple activities. A camper observed, "This campground has everything! Go carts, playground, disc golf, pool, ext... Just a one night stay to visit a friend. If you have kids it is perfect!"

Spacious sites: Some Detroit-area RV parks offer roomier campsites than others. A visitor to Haas Lake Park RV Campground stated, "Sites where huge and the campground was so clean and beautiful!" The park features four lakes and plenty of natural surroundings.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most RV parks near Detroit operate from April through October. According to one reviewer at Wayne County Fairgrounds, "I arrived for a 2 week stay in the area on 11/12. I discovered this campground was closed for the season."

Variable site quality: Site conditions can differ significantly between parks and even within the same campground. At Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA, a camper shared, "This is a new KOA so they are still transitioning from an RV park and are sprucing up the campground to KOA standards. Do not expect anything glamorous. The improvements appear to be gradual."

Road noise: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby highways or railways. A visitor to Harbortown RV Resort mentioned, "Another big issue is how close it is to the expressway which is noisy and there are trains that go by during the night. There must be a few crossings near by because they blew the horn for 5+ minutes at 4:30am."

Tips for camping with families

Seek out parks with kid-specific amenities: Camp Dearborn offers numerous activities for children. A visitor observed, "They have activities for both children and adults, two beautiful beaches, a pool, tennis courts, and now a zip line. Options for camping range from tent sites to luxury cabins."

Check for special events: Many RV parks host seasonal activities for families. One camper at Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA stated, "We've been here a few times. Very close to our house just a nice little getaway. We enjoyed the Halloween weekends. We decorate big and enjoyed other decorations as well!"

Consider non-traditional accommodations: Several campgrounds offer alternatives to standard RV sites. A visitor noted about Camp Dearborn, "We usually get a platform tent, which sleeps six people and comes with a kitchen cabana."

Tips from RVers

Assess site configurations before arrival: Not all RV parks offer pull-through sites. At Camp Lord Willing RV Park, a reviewer appreciated the practical layout: "Stayed at Camp Lord Willing in June 2021 and it was a peaceful friendly environment with seasonal and experienced campers. Lots are gravel. Shower House is at the front and not in a centralized location."

Check cell service availability: Connectivity varies between parks. One camper at St. Clair RV Resort noted, "The only downside was the abysmal Verizon signal. I'm talking 3 mbps bad." At Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA, a visitor reported better results: "Verizon via iPhone 12 via a weBoost signal booster: 22 mbps down and 3 mbps up with 29 ms ping."

Be prepared for varying reservation policies: Some campgrounds have specific site assignment practices. A camper at Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA observed, "Keep in mind you can't choose which site number you get. This is a new KOA so they are still transitioning from an RV park."
