    West Tower Hunt Camp

    True North Florida

    Feels like true north fl wilderness even though you’re very close to a rural residential area and only about 15 minutes off I-10. Any car can access even after heavy rain. Just don’t go too far deep because the road is rutted and muddy but there’s plenty of spots before that. I had signal (Verizon) at my site but it was spotty throughout the camp. The spots are huge, even had picnic tables, so great for group camping. I did see porter potties and another building next to it but I didn’t look inside. Only caveat is this IS a hunt camp so hunters are out with their dogs at night. I didn’t hear any gun shots but I did hear lots of dogs barking and howling, thankfully a good distance away so it didn’t bother me. Mosquitoes weren’t too bad this time of year even with the rain. I would come here again happily :)

    Hickory Point RV Park

    Great Stay

    Really nice stay at Hickory Point RV Park. First off — the people running this place genuinely care, and it shows from the moment you check in to helping guide your RV into the spot.

    The park is spotless — no garbage anywhere — and they really put effort into creating a welcoming atmosphere. The weekend we were there they had camper events like coffee & bagels one morning, and hot dogs and s’mores another evening (we didn’t take advantage, but it was a nice touch).

    Great amenities if you don’t need a pool. There are a couple of small private beaches on the inlet, comfortable seating areas to relax and watch the boats go by, and they also offer kayaks and SUPs to borrow.

    The location is excellent — just a few miles from Tarpon Springs and a little farther to Dunedin, Honeymoon Island, etc., right off Alt 19.

    We stayed in spot 117. We have a 30-foot RV and had no issues fitting. That said, the spaces in that area are a bit tight, so if you like to spread out and hang outside at your site, you’ll probably want to take advantage of the beautiful common waterfront spaces with tables and chairs instead.

    One thing worth noting — and it’s nothing the park can control — if you’re bringing bikes or hoping to hop on the Pinellas Trail, it’s very close, but getting there by bike or foot can feel dangerous. Cars fly down the road and there’s no sidewalk.

    Overall, we had a great few days and evenings here and definitely plan to come back!

    Long Pine Key Campground — Everglades National Park

    Everglades Field School - Long Pine Key with a big group

    I personally loved the Long Pine Key Campground, after being twice earlier this year. One trip was short and sweet with one other person as a site visit for a larger group the following month, and in February the weather was PERFECT! Cool, clear nights and no bugs. So peaceful and perfect, our team thought our next trip with our field school would be a breeze. Highly recommend visiting in February or while it’s still cool if you can!

    We returned in March, Spring Break, with a bunch of environmentally focused college students at their group site and 5 additional sites. And they LOVED it, even after a rocky start facing the strong Florida thunderstorms, waiting out the rain and then setting up in the dark. The rain was so needed, and honestly meant the world to the students to see the ecosystem come to life while in this drought.

    The group site housed 5 tents, and our additional sites had 2 each (students were told not to hang up hammocks on their sparse trees per the campground rules), and we were able to stay relatively close together and still have some breathing room for the beautiful vegetation between the sites. Keep an eye out for critters, especially snakes surrounding the campsite. We saw multiple cottonmouths and even some babies, super cool but want to keep your distance.

    The restrooms are clean, dish sink is a godsend, and showers were warmed by solar (score!). We are so thankful to the campsite for taking care of all of us, and it’s worth the adventure. Bugs, snakes, weather, and more, full send it!

    Holiday Travel Park

    Glad we only stayed one night

    It started that even though we had a reservation and called ahead, we had to wait 20 minutes for someone to get there to give us our site number. The place is full of long term residents, and many of them were very unkempt. We smelled marijuana the entire time. Lastly, when i went to use the restroom right before we left, it was locked and a sign in the door said to get a key from the office, which was a several minute walk away, but the office wasn’t open. Fortunately we were only there one night

    Beverly Beach Camptown RV Resort

    Beautiful beachfront camping!

    This spot is close to our home, but great for a weekend beach getaway. A little bit expensive, around 200 for a beachfront spot, but worth it. Currently some construction going on with the retaining wall. If you took the price and construction out of the equation, it would be a 5 star!
