Maryland’s Everglades

With our site near the water, the first wondrous experience was a beautiful sunset, the like you will have a hard time finding in most of the Eastern U.S. To see more of the sunsets and the island, the observation tower near the camp store is a plus. The fire roads laid out in a grid along with all the mucky black drainage ditches are eyesores, but I learned some plant lore and met a very showy holly tree while hiking the whitetail trail. The island with birds of many feather is a great show. Sitting with binoculars on the campground side, I saw a snowy egret, a white heron, and a great blue heron all within the circle of my binocular viewing angle. Many others caught my eye while in flight. Be sure to bring binoculars!

Great, easy camping!

We spent a night at this camp ground with our toddler. It was easy to reach and really fun! Everyone was friendly and the site was easy to find and clean with a picnic table and fire pit. The site host swung by with fire wood to buy ($5 bundles) just after we arrived. We chose a tent camping site (without electricity) and the bathrooms were super close and clean with showers and some laundry facilities. Also a lot of close, short hikes with the beach a very short hike away! We will definitely be going back soon.

Note: When we arrived, our site tags were actually hung at the entrance gate for easy pick up. The office number may be hard to reach, but someone is normally answering in the morning around 9.

Great get away close to the beach

We stayed in site 4 it was close to the bathroom and across from the boardwalk to the beach. It was beautiful and a great getaway!

First trip of the year

Close to home and our first time visiting this campground. The staff was very friendly and sites were well maintained. We stayed in Spadefish 3 which was right next to the pool and playground. Weather changes on us and was a bit cold and very windy but we still enjoyed every minute. Would highly recommend.

Perfect

We’re here for opening weekend and aside from the unseasonable cold this campground is nicely perfect for us. Sites are nicely sized and spaced out. Bathhouse is in very nice condition. Looking forward to the weekend warming up.

Extenuating circumstances

We arrived on opening day (March 19, 2021) for the season. They had unfortunately been a victim of the rain and the main road to the campground had washed out. Alternative routes were set up to enter and exit. I understand from reading other reviews that they can routinely have problems when it rains . We were placed in a small site in front of the check in location. We were pre assigned a site and not given a choice. The mud and puddles were so bad we couldn’t locate the sewer connection. But the next day they came over and found it for us and leveled out some gravel piles that had been dumped on the site. The site was level and gravel. A picnic table and fire ring was available. The roads are a bit narrow and there are lots of trees. Plenty of nice area to walk our dog. We didn’t use or even go in the bathhouses so can’t comment on those. All in all it was okay… as long as it doesn’t rain. It appeared there were some full time cabin residents and camper residents as well. Location was great and we loved going into Colonial Williamsburg from here.

Great Location!

You’re sleeping on sand so comfort score is already 5 stars! Not to mention you’re right next to the First Landing State Park beach! The campground and beach is on the corner of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean right above Virginia Beach.

We stayed at site 174 which is one of the sites closest to the beach but on the other side of the road. It was only me and my daughter for this trip but there were man made spaces for up to 3 large person tents!

Our site did not have any good placement for a hammock but many other sites do have great trees for hammocks or slack lines!

Our spot also had water and electric hookup.

Overall great park, great campground, and great experience!

Great

Place has everything. Pools, bait & tackle, food, crafts, piers, boats, beaches, etc etc etc. Bring your own boat or rent one for great fishing and crabbing

I love this place

Been going since a few months old, always stayed in Hoffman in a pop up. Tried greens loop 1 time in tent double site with 12 ppl that's a good loop if u want alot of sun. In recent years I've been staying in cabins they are all gone now. So we will be trying tents again until we get camper and can then do full hook up. I feel spiritually connected to this place met alot of out going staff and campers even daily beach go'ers. Use to spray for mosquitoes but havent seen trucks in a few years. Have a visitor center, peir, beach and lighthouse that was just renovated, and was open 1st sat of every month april through November. Use to have hay rides around Halloween and haunted trails or something but not in along time. June was blue and grey days civil war events. Fire wood $5 a box. Park store is open during summer and pandemic but not visitor center or store out by peir hasn't been in years but restrooms are. Has a boat launch and fish cleaning station. Dont get hurt takes fire a lifetime to respond 45 mins for broken leg but that was 20 years ago. But they oldschool respond to station then call but they doing the best all volunteer. Brush fire last year they were there in 10.

Close but Apart

Nice area on the beach. Only issue is that you can hear the traffic passing on the main road… Has ability to select your spot, which is nice because you can see how crowded and opt for a far off location. Tent sites are large & comfy.
Access to plenty of water, showers, beach and shorter hikes. Nice place to chill for a bit
