Best Campgrounds in Kentucky

We just spent a long weekend at Greenbo Lake State Park. It’s a clean campground, but sites are packed in pretty tight. Not my ideal kind of camping. The kids had fun because there were about 100 kids in the campground running around. There was a vacation bible school going on. Our kids were invited to take part in activities. Really nice people all over the campground. They advertise the sites with 30 and 50 amp hookups. What they didn’t say was that you had to share a post. The people beside me already had the 50 amp. I pulled everything to run on propane that I could and plugged into the 30 amp. We just had to watch and not use electrical appliances while the air was on. It was just way too busy and loud to relax for me. I think I’m just way too spoiled by Twin Knobs. There were way too many young kids on electric bikes that were turned loose. We were almost ran over a couple of times. We were standing beside the road once talking to the camp host in his golf cart and one teen flew between us and I had to grab my 87 year old mother to get her out of the way. The host didn’t seem to care. I was just on edge the whole time trying to keep my grandkids and mom from getting ran over. There were also a bunch of golf carts driving around as late as 2 am. I sound like an old fart, but I’m just putting it out there for future campers. We were on site 53 along the creek. There was no AT&T service, but Verizon had service.

We needed a spot near Mammoth Cave National Park (which was full). This small City Park in the town of Munfordville, only 25 miles away, fit the bill perfectly. The phone number connects you to their City Hall - they asked for the make, model, color and license plate number of our vehicle (so their police officer would know we belonged there), and told us spots are available on a "first come" basis but are almost always available. In our case, we were the only ones there on a Friday summer night.

The park is delightful: it's by a river, surrounded by trees, and has a paved path circling soccer and disc golf fields, a playground, and four pickleball courts. There also is a 4-mile trail. All of the day users left by 9 pm, and then we had the park to ourselves. It was a very quiet spot.

Access to the park is via a short one-lane road that has some very tight curves. The overnight spots aren't really set up for RVs - those also are accessed via tight turns and there isn't an adequate turnaround space at the end of the access road -- I parked in a spot knowing that I would have to back my 23' trailer down the access road in order to get to back to a larger parking lot area. For smaller RVs and trailers, camping here is manageable and recommended.

Site 64 was a bit difficult to back into but very level once you get in. I think it has some of the best views in the campground. Lots of other campers had their boats moored along the shoreline, they were camping across the street in the shade. I had fun paddle boarding with the little dog in the inlet right off this campsite. This is a large campground with lots of activities, but I didn’t do any. We stayed right at the campsite. Land between the lakes it’s a beautiful historic area to explore as well. We did not use the bathroom since they were not close to our site, so I can’t comment on that.

Stayed in site 64 which had great views. Pad was level but a little difficult to back into because of one small tree. Not much shade on this site and it can get HOT! Did not use the bathrooms as they weren’t very close. So I can’t comment on that. I had a fun time paddle boarding in the little inlet right off this campsite. Lots of other campers had their boats moored along the shoreline. They were staying across the street. All in all I would say this is a nice campground and I would come back. There seem to be lots of amenities for the kiddos. Also, land between the lakes is a beautiful historic place to explore and this would be a good base camp for that.

This isn’t a campground…it’s a run-down trailer park. The only sites for mobile campers is up front and surrounded by ratty lots full of trailers with junk all around d them.

No attention to lawn detail…overgrown and needs to be trimmed.

But that’s not the worst…there were two pre-teen boys playing around the playground…and around our lot. Right after dark, a pre-teen boy came up to our camper, slammed our entry assist handle and locked it over…locking us in the camper. Fortunately, my wife was in the bath-house. It scared my young daughters. They later came again, knocking on the side of the camper and taunting us. There were no other kids around…I then saw them go into the manager’s house….

It was dirty, unsafe, and a pleasure to leave…just gross.

Grayson Lake State Park- East Kentucky. So, we had reservations for Carter Caves, but they canceled on me due to redoing the campground. I was fortunate to find a site at Grayson Lake for Wednesday & Thursday night. 

This is a very nice campground at a small state park roughly 10 miles from Carter Caves. Most of it is campground & golf course, with 2 trails.

 Grayson Lake has 71 sites with water& electric. There's a dump station. There's 2 playgrounds. 2 bathhouses. They are on the high side of state park clean. I didn't see any spider webs or bugs.

 The area was meticulously mowed & clean- no trash at the site or fire pit. The staff at check were friendly & helpful. 

We were at site 19 close to the bathhouse. A nice site, but that row had full sun. There were many nice sites, but many had a serious incline. Stay away from site 39 - that has a good view of the wastewater treatment plant!

Grayson Lake is part of a larger area managed by the US Army Corp of Engineers. There's a lot of boating & fishing. We had a good time & if in the area would stay again!
