Best Campgrounds near Hopkinsville, KY

The landscape surrounding Hopkinsville, Kentucky features diverse camping opportunities within an hour's drive, particularly focused around the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, located about 25 miles north of Hopkinsville near Dawson Springs, offers tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin accommodations from April through October. Lake Barkley State Resort Park in Cadiz provides waterfront camping with boat-in access and full-service sites. Military personnel can utilize Fort Campbell's Eagle's Rest Army Travel Camp, while RV travelers often choose RJourney Clarksville RV Resort for its year-round availability and full hookup sites.

Camping permits and reservations are essential during peak seasons, with most state parks requiring advance bookings from April through October. Many dispersed camping areas in Land Between the Lakes require an annual permit ($30) that allows camping in designated areas. According to one visitor, "Kentucky Lake has some of the cleanest waters and the largest fish of any place. This area is always busy, 24/7, pretty much year round." Road conditions vary significantly, with some campgrounds accessible via paved roads while others require travel on gravel forest roads. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while spring brings frequent thunderstorms that can affect camping conditions and water levels.

Water access dominates the camping experience in this region, with Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley providing the primary recreation focus. Campers frequently mention the quality of boat ramps and fishing opportunities as highlights. One reviewer noted, "Hurricane Creek is tucked away in its own little area with lots of shade trees and its very own boat ramp. The sites are close but not stacked on top of each other." Wildlife sightings, particularly deer and coyotes, are commonly reported at more remote sites. Highway noise affects some campgrounds near major roads, particularly those near Clarksville. Special events like Hot August Blues at Kenlake State Resort Park can lead to fully booked campgrounds, requiring planning months in advance for summer weekend stays.

    Canal Campground- Lake Barkley COE

    Nice COE campground

Grand Rivers KY Canal Campground at Barkley Lake COE Site 111 This is a great COE campground located between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, with views of the Barkley Dam. The canal connects them and you can see boats and occasionally barges passing through. There are over 100 campsites are available, many with water views. We had a spacious site with a river view. Other loops are closer together and no view. Sites offer electric and/or water hookups, tables and fire ring. Other amenities include clean old style bathhouses, a dump station, laundry facilities, a playground, and picnic pavilions. We saw several deer roaming the grounds. There's a great pizza place in town Papa Z.

    Lake Barkley State Resort Park

    Shaded but unlevel

Enjoyed our stay. Bring quite a bit of leveling materials as the sites are very unlevel. 1 dump station and an older but usable bath house. The road to come in was narrow but we'll marked. Very shaded and decently spaced out. Water and electric only.

Colson Hollow Group Camp Land Between the Lakes

    Good place to boon camp

We stayed here two nights with our friends in two travel trailers. We had 4 adults and 4 kids (ages 2, 3, and 10) and we had the best time. This was our first time boon camping and it was actually way more enjoyable than being at a campground! It was quiet, secluded from other campers, and we had close access to the lake where we were parked. We will definitely be camping here again!

    Forest Service Rd 343

    One of my favorite spots

This is one of the best spots I’ve found on this app. I had one other person show up to cook, but they left shortly after. Beautiful view with a nice fire pit, I was able to swim and had a great night to myself!

    Bee Spring Lodge-Campground

    Beautiful!

We will definitely be coming back to Bee Springs! This was our maiden voyage in our new pull behind. We frequent Kentucky Lake and have stayed at other locations near by but this is our new favorite. Nice tree shaded sites, great lake view, ice vending and convenient boat ramp and dock. Shower house is a basic camp site shower house but the stalls are spacious. Also the owner George is amazing!

    Hillman Ferry Campground

    Beautiful lake front campsites

Site 64 was a bit difficult to back into but very level once you get in. I think it has some of the best views in the campground. Lots of other campers had their boats moored along the shoreline, they were camping across the street in the shade. I had fun paddle boarding with the little dog in the inlet right off this campsite. This is a large campground with lots of activities, but I didn’t do any. We stayed right at the campsite. Land between the lakes it’s a beautiful historic area to explore as well. We did not use the bathroom since they were not close to our site, so I can’t comment on that.

Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area Hillman Ferry Campground

Beautiful lake front spots at Hillman Ferry CG

Stayed in site 64 which had great views. Pad was level but a little difficult to back into because of one small tree. Not much shade on this site and it can get HOT! Did not use the bathrooms as they weren’t very close. So I can’t comment on that. I had a fun time paddle boarding in the little inlet right off this campsite. Lots of other campers had their boats moored along the shoreline. They were staying across the street. All in all I would say this is a nice campground and I would come back. There seem to be lots of amenities for the kiddos. Also, land between the lakes is a beautiful historic place to explore and this would be a good base camp for that.
