Atop a forested ridge within George Washington National Forest, Hawk Recreation Area Campground sits at the end of a narrow mountain road that demands attention from drivers. The approach is single-lane with frequent bends, and cell service typically drops out well before the entrance. Come prepared with written directions and a compass if you're visiting for the first time.
The campground itself is arranged as a single loop, with 15 numbered sites along the outer perimeter and a central island containing a vault toilet and hand-pump water spigot. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern pole, with enough tree cover between sites to provide some visual separation. Reviewers note that the water pump has been out of order on multiple visits, so carrying your own supply is worth the extra planning. Cell coverage varies by carrier: at least one Verizon user reported poor signal, while a T-Mobile user found two bars of 5G.
Bears are a real presence here. Multiple campers mention sightings, including one who spotted a bear within the first hour of arrival. Jakob D. sums it up simply: "A few nearby trails but watch for bears." A connector trail to the Tuscarora Trail is well-marked and accessible directly from the campground road. On weekends, particularly Saturdays, some campers have noted the sound of gunfire from a nearby shooting area carrying through the forest for much of the day.
Registration is handled on-site using a 3x5 card at the entrance. No reservations are accepted. The campground fills on summer weekends, and not all campers register upon arrival, which can make it hard to gauge true availability. If the loop is full, dispersed sites with fire rings and pull-offs exist along the gravel roads leading to and past the campground. Stays are limited to 21 consecutive nights, after which campers must leave for at least 10 days. No pets are permitted.
Late October through early November typically sees lighter crowds, and the Bluffs at Cedar Creek Campground provides a nearby alternative if this site is full. Bring your own water as a backup, and download any maps or navigation before you lose signal on the forest road.
