    Sand Dunes Recreation

    Awesome Soaking Pools & Proximity to Great Sand Dunes

    This is our second time camping at The Hooper Pool (SandDunesPool.com). The first time we were in a C class in the boondocking area this time, we have a travel trailer with 30 amp & fresh water hooks. Water is the same hot water used to fill the pools, so it’s a little odd at first. Black water has to go to the dump site about 100 yards away. There are 10 RV sites with hooks, 3 rustic cabins, a lodge house, and an unimproved area that has RV pull through sites and tent pads. The unimproved areas are subject to high winds whereas the others are inside a wind break which works very well. Dogs are welcome in the camping areas but not in the pools. There are several pools filled with fish and frogs, but fishing (& frogging) aren’t allowed. We really like this site and plan to return at some point. Majestic views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the San Luis Valley. The night sky is amazing but the RV sites with hook ups have two parking lot type lights with white lights that stay in all night. Not sure if that’s a new development or if it has always been that way. Coin operated laundry and showers on site or pay for admission to The Greenhouse (21+) Pool and use the showers there.

    Bay City Campground

    Sketchy people. Cramped.

    Drove up here thinking this would be a nice little spot, and besides being on the river, the spaces are cramped together and there are a few what look like ditched cars. I drove through and some meth head yelled at me making sure I wouldn't stay in the campground. Yikes!

    Nice Spot, a bit crowded.

    Lots of good spots along this road. Busy, but spread out well enough. Overall very nice, but wish it was easier to find runs or bike rides directly from camp.

    Spruce Grove Campground

    We love this campground- ample sized tent sites (some slightly off level but nothing too crazy). Current camp host has been wonderful. Pretty quiet, views are beautiful. Lots of great rocks/boulders for kiddos. NOTE: some of the spots do have quite a hike to get to- if you have a lot of heavy gear make sure you are checking if the spot is drive up or hike in :) Spot 3 is about 90ish meters from parking- wasn’t too bad, and we’re close to the restrooms and trash collection

    Deep Creek Trailhead Camp

    Great place for tent camping.

    This place is ideal for tent camping and set up for that vs RV/campers. The sites have parking areas then walk down to the creek with fire rings and tent areas. There are sighs fires in rings only so if you park your rv up by the road no fire for you. Not a big deal but the road is relatively busy to park and camp by.

    Upper Colorado River BLM Dispersed

    Great overnight

    I was planning to stay at a rest area down the way, but it was super loud and also a bit iffy on whether over night stays were allowed. Decided to come check this place out and so glad I did.

    Beautiful views. A train weaving past. The river below. Saw an eagle and osprey.

    Three other RVs up here when I arrived and not really room for much more. Someone came in the night and set up a tent below. Super close to the highway, so some noise.
