    Lost Trail

Lovely site near the Rio Grande

Most sites are Park and walk into fire pit and table area. A few scattered back-in sites. No pull through. Nice wooden picnic tables, men and women’s bathrooms. Level tent sites, water pump on site but nothing available in October. No cell service. Loads of down wood for collection. Close to river access

South Rim Campground — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    Winter camping!

We stayed in the winter off season in Loop A, since it’s the only loop open. They plow Loop A and all pull through sites. There was no fee for the campsite, just the park entrance fee. There’s no power in this loop and there’s no water since it’s shut off in the winter. There are pit toilets which are pretty clean for pit toilets. There were a few campers but they were spread so far apart since everyone needed pull through sites cause it snowed a lot recently. Some places the snow is up to your thighs and some places it’s up to your waist.

Even without amenities, we were happy a campground was open in the Colorado winter.

[Internet. Verizon via iPhone has no signal. However, with our booster Nighthawk MR-1100 - 25 mbps down and 1 mbps up with 200 ping.]

    Ouray KOA

    Location!

The best thing about this park was the location. It is located close to Ouray and many activities in the area. The park also offers beautiful scenery and it is a wonderful Basecamp for exploring the area. There is a state park nearby with a beautiful lake and kayaking. There are hiking trails nearby and many wonderful off road four wheel trails.

The park can accommodate big rigs and we were able to get our 38 foot 5’er into the parking and into a spot, but I would not call the park big rig friendly due to tight turns and small sites.

Amenities include a nice camp store, laundry facilities, restaurant with a nice outdoor deck, on property horseback riding, on property jeep rental, hiking trails. There were bathrooms and showers at the back of the property but it was too far to walk from the front of the property so we never used them. The laundry facilities are a little small for this sized park and we weren’t able to do laundry because it was too busy.

One big problem was electrical outages during 100° weather. The electrical system in the park just cannot keep up. Luckily we had solar and were able to maintain AC until evening hours.

There is one small hot tub that was usually very busy we didn’t use that either.

There are nice tent camping spots.

Most of the people in the park Had four wheelers or motorcycles for off-road trails. The off-road trails in this area are amazing and shouldn’t be missed. We took a tour from Ouray and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We took a horseback ride from the park and had a lovely time. The horses were very safe and great for a family experience. They also offer 15 minute rides for children.

We would stay again if we were in the area.

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

    Ouray KOA Holiday

    Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

    Little Molas Lake Campground

    Poplar picturesque site

6/28/22 - 7/12/22: This was a nice retreat for us. It is a very popular place on the weekend, but during the week it is much quieter. Most of the weekend traffic is heading to the trailhead for hiking or biking. There are 8 sites here, several large enough for my 34’ fifth-wheel trailer, one is a pull-through with two sites. Vault toilet, no water or dump station. There was 1-bar 5G Verizon, and 2-bars AT&T 4G that were both spotty; cloud cover between the lake and Silverton caused occational intermittent connectivity. Elevation is about 10,300 and posed a problem for our generator that caused severe spark-plug fouling. But, re-jetting the carburetor from a #61 to #58 solved the problem.

    Alpen Rose RV Park

Nice park, but not fond of the "big rig sites" A-B

Very nice campground overall and staff is very nice as well. Its only aboht 15 minutes from the Durango train, which was awesome, and has nice ammenities, though the cafe and pool are closed now (oct). Its a pretty expensive park...big rigs are regularly 79.00 and they did discount it 8.00 per night for off season, but all the big rig sites line up along the entrance/exit and people are arriving as late as 8pm which is really obnoxious when your eating dinner listening to rig after rig and car after car. Also, not all big rig sites are created equal. All are buddy sites, so you can face a friend, and all but ours (A-B) have a nice grass area...we have gravel and are closer to "our buddy" who we dont happen to know...the picnic tables are basically next to each other. We would come back, but would take a back in next time so we arent so close to the entrance.

    Amphitheater Campground

    Spectacular Views

Stayed one night at this popular campground while passing through Ouray. Did not have a reservation, but the campground host, Steve, found us a good, level site for our campervan & got us registered. The site, #20, was near the end of the road leading to the overlook, and across the road from the vault toilets & water station. Small site but very private. Firewood was available for $8/bundle. Short walk to the overlook which provided a great view of Ouray below. The high cliffs around the campground were spectacular. The site had a table, lantern poll, metal fire ring and tent pad. No electric & water hookups. Unfortunately, I don't recall if we had any AT&T or T-Mobile service. Some of the campsites were somewhat close together, but couldn't see them through the foliage. The only negative at site #20 was an occasional chemical smell from the vault toilets across the road. The vault toilets themselves were clean. The site itself was also clean & well maintained; e.g., the tent pad was ranked. I feel that this campground is not suitable for big rigs; posted signs along the access road provide warnings.

Guide to Ouray

RV campgrounds in Ouray, Colorado provide access to camping at 7,700 feet elevation, with temperatures that can drop below freezing even in summer months. Located in a valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, these campgrounds experience rapid weather changes and afternoon thunderstorms during summer. Most Ouray camping facilities operate seasonally from May through October due to heavy snowfall in winter months.

What to do

Hike the Perimeter Trail: The trail has access points directly from camping areas. At 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, "the perimeter trail actually has an access point at the park" according to JJ V. The trail offers a 5-mile loop around Ouray with multiple waterfall views.

Walk to town amenities: Many rv campgrounds near Ouray position campers within walking distance of downtown. One camper at Ouray Riverside Resort notes "the river walk into town is so beautiful!" while another mentions it "leads to the hot springs and town."

Visit the Hot Springs Pool: Located a short walk from several Ouray camping sites. "It's only a few blocks from breweries, restaurants, and just down the road from the town hot springs!" reports Morghan and Taylor D. The pool maintains a year-round temperature between 80-106°F depending on the section.

What campers like

Mountain views from sites: Campers consistently mention the scenic surroundings as a highlight. At Ouray Riverside Resort, one visitor describes "great 360 degree mountain views" while another notes "Every direction you look is beautiful."

River proximity: Several Silverton Lakes RV Resort sites back up to water features. Dean W. mentions "Animas Creek flows through the edge of the campground, near the tent sites" providing natural sound barriers between campsites.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain high standards for bathrooms and common areas. At 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, a reviewer states "Bathrooms are clean and code protected" while another notes "The bathrooms are very roomy, and they have plenty of hot showers."

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Some parks feature tight sites while others offer more room. At Red Mountain Motel & RV Park, one reviewer notes "The sites are a bit close but for the most part the place is quiet," contrasting with Kat's experience: "We were able to put out our slides with a wooden picnic table available between the sites with a good 4-5 ft on each side of the table."

Seasonal operations: Most facilities close during winter months. Alpen Rose RV Park operates "Apr 1 - Oct 31" while Silver Summit RV Park runs "May 15 to October 15."

Fire restrictions: Rules vary by campground. Delci L. notes about Ouray Riverside Resort: "No fire rings, but there is a communal fire pit."

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds on-site: Some campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. At Elkhorn RV Resort, the facilities include a playground area and spacious cabins that can accommodate families.

Multi-use cabins: For families who don't have RVs, cabin options exist. Lynn explains that at Elkhorn RV Resort, "We also stayed on one of the cabins to give kids more trailer room. You provide the top bedding, but there was a queen bed and a bunk (so 4 could sleep easy)."

Safety considerations: Keep children away from moving vehicles in busier parks. One camper at 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park advises, "There is a road that goes through the grounds and it says 14 mph but some people go faster, watch your kids and animals."

Tips from RVers

Elevation impacts: The high elevation affects RV systems. At Alpen Rose RV Park, located at lower elevation than Ouray, a camper shares, "We had technical issues and they were very accommodating plus they have an RV tech on-site."

Winter preparations: Cold temperatures require special precautions. Kevin G. notes that at Red Mountain Motel & RV Park, "Owners required disconnecting water at night to prevent their water pipes from freezing and bursting" even in September.

Navigation challenges: Some parks have limited turning space. At 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, a visitor warns, "Spaces are tight but that's to be expected" while at Silver Summit RV Park, a reviewer mentions "Tight back in sites on gravel."
