Portal Campground provides free camping at 10,500 feet elevation within White River National Forest, accessible via a challenging 6.5-mile drive on Lincoln Creek Road from Highway 82. The rough dirt road requires high clearance vehicles, though several reviewers managed the route in smaller cars by driving slowly on dry conditions.
The campground contains five designated sites positioned around Grizzly Reservoir, each equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Sites near the lake fill first, with Karl G. noting campers should "get there early" since spots operate on a first-come basis. Vault toilets serve the area, though campers must pack in drinking water and pack out all trash. The elevation brings significant temperature drops, with nighttime lows reaching the upper 30s even in late August.
A creek runs behind some campsites, and the reservoir offers fishing opportunities for rainbow trout. The Grizzly Lake Trail begins nearby, providing a seven-mile hike to an alpine lake. Connor M. describes the location as "very secluded off the beaten path," though campers report occasional noise from maintenance operations associated with the reservoir infrastructure.
Multiple dispersed camping options line Lincoln Creek Road both before and beyond the established campground for overflow situations. The campground typically operates from mid-June through early September, with peak usage occurring Friday afternoons through weekends. Wildlife sightings include moose passing through campsites. Arrive with warm sleeping gear and prepare for the demanding access road to reach this high-elevation camping option.
