    Sterling State Park Campground

    State Park, almost zero trees

    Why the Dyrt has this place listed under "glamping" is beyond me.  This is very far from that.  A state park, some FHU sites, some pull thru, but it's almost like camping in a prairie.  There's so very few trees here, so almost every site will be full sun. Full, blisteringly hot, sun.

    It's an ok campground, but that's it.  Host (each time  we were there) did nothing that we could see.  People tend to drive fast here, even staff.

    It's right on Lake Erie, which can be good/bad, depending on if the toxic algae blooms are occuring.

    City of Monroe is nearby for whatever you might need. (Aldi, etc)

    Even though this park is close, it's just not one we like to choose because of the barren feel of the place. (We've been here three times)

    Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area

    Nice state park

    As usual, there's only electric at sites, but the pedestals seem fairly new, and tight. South loop is nicely wooded & has a newer, larger restroom/shower building, not much lake view. The north loop is a little less wooded, with the NW end having a little better lake views, but a pretty ancient restroom/shower facility.

    Across the lake is the day use area with a beach and concession stand. (There's a small camp store in the north loop.)

    ADA Only sites are asphalt paved. Some of the regular sites could be a challenge to get level on, but the rangers told me they have wood blocks for loan if you don't have enough.

    Our first night & a half, we had some terrible neighbors two sites over. Constant profanities, yelling at & threatening their kids... real dirtbags. Rangers booted them from the park! Good to see them taking such positive action. I have not run into a single staff member here that wasn't pleasant.

    This was our first time here. A test run, since it's only an hour from home (but feels farther). We'll be back for sure. (Especially with gas prices so high anymore.)

    T-Mobile was only slow LTE at our site, but our Starlink worked perfectly at our site. Might be harder to get a clear shot in the more wooded areas of the park.

    Lots of sites to choose from ranging from wood to lake view. None of the sites are actually right on the lake--that area is for all campers to enjoy--with spots to park your pontoons/jetskis/kayaks/dingy. Pit toilets were a bit smelly, but clean. Boat launch near campground entrance. Arrived on a Monday and was busy even during the week, but still several spots available--snagged one of two lake view sites available. Good cell service. Would stay again!

    Overall best camping experience I have ever had. Easy check in. Peaceful. Good "neighbors". Cleanest bathroom houses. Great beach!

    Big Knob State Forest Campground

    Secluded sites, some with direct beach access

    We were here during the second week of July, and there were only two other campers our first night. We got spot 7, which has lots of shade and direct beach access. The beach is very nice.

    There are pit toilets and a single community well which is old-fashion hand pump. Its water spigot has no threads for attaching a hose.

    There are bugs, but not too bad for the UP this year.

    Very nice! Would come again!

    Wonder Woods Campground of the Sister Lakes

    Hidden Gem in SW Michigan!

    We booked a last minute spot and are so glad we did! The campground wonderfully maintained by perhaps the nicest hosts we have met! We pulled in early Friday evening and were greeted by Ken and Chris, who helped us pull into our site (which was VERY appreciated since the sites are pretty tight!). There are a lot of seasonal sites, four cabins, and a guest house that is tucked behind a privacy fence. Bathrooms were extremely clean and looked newly renovated. They even had a basket of toiletries and a stack of clean towels. Though we didn’t use it, there was a cool open air “game barn” that had a pool table, foosball, seating area, etc…it would be a great hangout for older kids or teenagers. Probably the best part was the walkability. There is lake access directly across the street down a set of concrete stairs. It’s a grassy area, not a “beach” and a lot of goose poop so we brought our chairs down. You can enter the lake to cool off, which was great because it was a hot day. Also walkable are two restaurant/breweries. “The Strand” is literally next door to the campground with a great outdoor seating area with a view of the lake. About a 5 minute walk is Sister Lakes Brewing Company. Both places had excellent cocktails and cool lake vibes. Full hookups at all sites. We look forward to coming back!!!

    Keweenaw Peninsula High Rock Bay

    Wow—but not for the faint hearted

    Absolutely beautiful, great hiking paths, cool weather. But the road in is not to be taken lightly. We were happy we had put a lift kit in our AWD van and glad we had a mud/ruts setting. Keep that in mind before you venture out.

    July 8, 2026, 82 degrees Make sure you goto michigan reservations as it’s confusing for first come first serve.

    Site 22, 2 bars 5G on T-Mobile Flat Sandy grass, pit toilets. Trash dumpster on the way out. Good rustic camping, bugs were not bad, mostly flat and only a few campers during the week. Horse, bike and hiking trails right next to the CG. We saw a few loons near the boat launch.

    Silver Creek State Forest Campground

    Rustic, River, and Racoons!!! 🦝

    I camped here on my motorcycle in a tent. NO CELL PHONE SERVICE!!!It is quiet after dark, river sites all over, walkin sites at the entrance. Its $20 a night. Its a nice scenery the bugs are a little rough but there is fire wood close by for $5 a bundle. All in all a good experience except... The damn racoons!! It was like the movie the great outdoors and they come in packs!!! I had to hide everything and they stole my ketchup 😂
