Great free campsite

A nice free campsite. Amenities are pit toilet, campfire, and picnic tables. There are trails but currently they’re closed.

Lots of space, beautiful views, hiking trails, and more...

We stayed on the west side of the campground, and we’re apprehensive at first because these were all newer sites (made from previous parking lot). We really loved it! The sites were close to level, spacious, and our back window had a great view of the sunsets and the lake. Electric only sites, but…

  • if you can see it, there is a crane (our alarm in the mornings)
  • some of the other sites in this loop (lake is on the right, even numbered sites)

Not very private

Great location in relation to Lake Superior but sites are not very private. Lots of firewood available for sale.

Very Nice & Clean

They were still building much of this campground when we visited. All the sites felt intimate and private. The bathrooms were rustic but clean and big. They were building really nice cabins as well. Would definitely return.

Twin Lakes Campground

Beautiful lake, great swimming, too many four wheelers. Local black bears. Close to Lake of the Clouds and the Porcupine mountains.

Steps from Lake Superior

This was a great car campground visited in August 2020. We could walk to the visitor center via a short wooded trail, walk or drive to a small convenience store with firewood, and step over to Lake Superior each evening for sunrise. Lots of black flies in Northern Michigan during late summer, and…

Excellent Escape!

If you're looking for an off-the-grid escape this is it.  The hike-in/paddle in camping spots are equipped with a picnic table and a firepit, everything else is up to you.  I have been going here yearly for the last 10ys and absolutely love it!  The only downside is the fishing has gone downhill…

Mountains in Michigan? And, on the shores of Lake Superior? Amazing!

Union Bay is the only “modern” campground in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness, offering around 100 fully-reservable, electric sites with access to a modern bathroom and shower house. The lakeside sites, as you can imagine, are the most popular and spacious, and most often booked 6 months in…

  • Lakeside campsites are beautiful, but the pounding shore can be very loud at times.
  • The gales of November came early.
  • Lots of grass, but a ton of mud too. Come prepared.

Camping in the Wild at its best!

This is my absolute favorite place to camp, hike, kayak, fish, and just get away from it all. If you want seclusion, you can find it here with many remote campsites that are only accessible through the water or overland by hiking the trails in the park.

The park has 2 rustic cabins and 2 yurts…

Beautiful park with easy access to Lake Superior

This was our first time camping in Michigan and we loved being so close to Lake Superior. We're used to MN state parks, so we found the campsites in MI to be a bit small and too close to each other. The fire ring for the site behind ours was very close to the bed area of our camper. Our spot was…

Beautiful park, busy campground

You can't beat the Porcupine Mountains if you're looking for wilderness experiences in Michigan. Union Bay is a nice campground to use as a base camp for lots of day hikes in the area.

It can be busy and weekends are louder with kids, dogs, loud neighbors, etc , just like most state parks.…

It’s was a standard stay at a State Park

We tent camped. It’s crowded and it’s close quarters but it’s the Porkies and it’s what we expected. Screaming kids, barking dogs, loud partiers, RV’s that never shut their lights off and those light obscure the night sky views...this park had all of that. We expected it and unless you are early or…

Beautiful Small Campground!

This was a beautiful small campground with only 6 campsites arranged around a loop and are spaced well. Access to the campground is off of a gravel road which is somewhat narrow. When I arrived 9/7/20 there was only one other camper so I had my pick of sites which were all relatively level. I…
