    The Potholes Recreation Site

    Early season Dream

    Stayed 2 nights in early April and honestly… this place feels like another planet in the best way.

    The drive in was easy and completely manageable — no stress, no white-knuckle sections — which made it perfect for getting the kids out there without worrying about access. Once you arrive, the views are immediately breathtaking. Red rock cliffs, layered canyon walls, and wide open desert landscapes in every direction. It really does feel other-worldly.

    The best part for us was the exploring right from camp. No need to load up the car — we just stepped out and wandered. Tons of kid-friendly hiking, scrambling, and climbing on soft sandstone hills and boulders. The terrain is adventurous without being sketchy, so the kids could roam, climb, and slide while we relaxed nearby. It’s basically a natural playground.

    We also loved how quiet and spread out everything felt. Plenty of space to pick a scenic spot and enjoy the solitude.

    Only con: It’s the desert… so yeah — sand and red dirt everywhere. Shoes, tent, kids, food — all instantly dusty. But honestly, that’s part of the experience and we knew exactly what we were signing up for.

    Overall: Easy access + unreal scenery + perfect kid-friendly exploring right from camp = absolutely worth it. We’ll definitely be back.

    Santa Fe Trail (Top Site)

    Fantastic views!

    Stayed 2nd night on Santa Fe trail up top. Took a hike and scouted an open site further up so moved camp. This site is a less protected from wind and somewhat less private but stellar views.

    Black Canyon Dispersed Camping

    Beautiful Views! A Bit Unkempt

    It's gorgeous up here! I camped at the first spot in the turnout to avoid mud. After a walk I found more sites that were down the right hand road that I could have gotten to with my low clearance vehicle. There were old beer cans and trash that I picked up along the way. Some defunct fire pits and some used ones. Pretty busy but everyone was polite and quiet!

    Santa Fe Trail Dispersed Site

    Perfect Site

    Found this site on my drive from Nashville to Moab for an overnight stop. Arrived shortly after sunset and was able to find the trail easily and navigate up to the site. This road definitely needs raised 4 x 4 vehicle as the switchbacks and rocks would be too much for a lower vehicle. OnX rate this trail as Green and I would agree although it’s on the higher end of Green. I arrived on a Saturday and sites filled up quickly. Vehicles arrived 10 minutes after I found this spot and turned around.

    Rampart Range Area Dispersed Campsite

    The road is so bump

    As mentioned the pins are wrong and the actual sites are much further down the road. If you see this random circle spot on the right side of the road just take it becauae it saves you alot or bumpyness. You get a view through the trees and its much quicker back to town. Only press forward down the road if you really care about maximizing your view.

    Cascade-Chipita Park/Woodland Park

    None of the pins are right

    Ignore all of the pins on the map. None of them are right all the spots are WAY past the pins by a couple miles on one of the worst dashboard roads you will ever ride on. It is a torture test for any van or RV. If something is loose you Will find out very soon. There are signs about no camping on one side of the road but you just have to look for little pull offs along the way. Like I said well past the pins and they are spread out pretty good. Some amazing views out this way. 1 may e 2 bars cell unless you can get a spot over woodland park but if you are on the backside facing away, forget it.

    Shavano Mountain

    Rough road

    If you are in a 2wd car or small suv, stay on a and b loop. There is one hill thats steep and loose rock to get up here and the views are only marginally better. Dont risk it if you have a 2wd heavy van. Not saying it cant be done, just saying there is a measurable risk for inexperienced drivers in low clearance cars. The views are amazing and the road keeps going up and up well beyond where I stopped. Honestly tho only go up here is the loops below are full its not much different but the whole area is amazing. Pack an extra blanket it gets cold and windy at night up here
