    The Crags Campground — State Forest State Park

    Falsely advertised campsite

    In January I researched campsites at State Forest State Park. Due to lack of shade, I chose not to stay by Northern Michigan Reservoir and chose The Crags campground instead. After looking at each campsite, I chose to reserve site 524 due to the pictures and site description ‘heavily shaded, pull through tent site’. A week prior to arriving I double checked the campsite to verify it did have ample shade as I have a black lab that gets uncomfortable after it reaches 70 degrees and didn’t want to be sitting out in the hot sun myself as it was to reach the lower 80s on one of the days. Unfortunately upon arriving at The Crags, we found that the site had zero shade and was the least shaded campsite at Crags, nothing like the pictures on the website. There is no attendant and no cell reception so I was at a loss for what to do. I later found the Visitor Center and spoke to the young girl working, but she was more interested in eating her chips than caring about my campsite being falsely advertised as having shade. Needless to say we didn’t spend much time at the campsite after it got hot and had to be creative in finding places to stay cool until the sun started to go down. In addition, most people go camping to get away, unplug, and find the quiet in nature. The campsite unfortunately had a group of 4 come in Friday night to do nothing but drink, be loud and party all day long. On the other side was a family with two small children, one of which was happy to be camping and was screaming and having a tantrum at all hours of the night. With no site attendant, there was no control over the noise. It was unfortunately not the quiet, relaxing weekend away that we had planned and we will not return to this site in the future. Attached pictures show the actual campsite vs the advertised/shady campsite and description. The reservation website definitely needs to be updated

    Dakota Terraces Campground — Ridgway State Park

    Lovely stay

    This campground is a great little stay! It’s suitable for RVs and tents. There are flush bathrooms and showers available, and there is lake access for swimming, boating, etc.

    Himes Peak Campground

    Peaceful with at least a couple of level spots

    I enjoyed two peaceful nights (Sunday and Monday nights) at this campground. The road down to the campground is a good gravel road. 

    I had the place to myself both nights.

    The charge for the weekend is a bit higher than weekdays.  Weekday price is $24 or $12 for reduced rate pass holders. Outhouse is clean and well stocked. 

    I camped in site 10 and was able to park in such a way that my truck and pop-up camper were level as is.  There are two pull-through sites. 

    Cows have been in the campground but none of their manure piles were recent. You do occasionally hear cows calling for their herd mates.

    While there is a large garbage bin, the lid is badly dented and I was not able to get it open. 

    Each site has a large bear-proof storage container.

    Aspenglen Campground — Rocky Mountain National Park

    Good lil spot next to Estes Park entrance

    Solid campground for what they offer. Huge bear boxes that fit our cooler, kitchen bin and dog food bin (plus more). We stayed at 004 loop A right next to the entrance. Partial shade and easily accessible to the amphitheater and river trail.

    We had my dog so it was nice to have a few short hikes he could do in the park. Very friendly staff! Not much privacy but that’s to be expected for a national park in the summer

    Nice area for a stop

    Had Porta potty's and bear proof trash dumpster. Choice of shaded or open areas. Picnic tables and fire rings denote camp spots. Road narrows after shaded area but multiple sites beyond that.

    Great site right next to Mesa Verde NP

    Great campsite with lots of space and plenty of distance between groups. We had no problem with the road in our camper van, and we would definitely stay here again!

    Williams Fork Reservoir Campground

    Beautiful and quiet!!

    Even with the reservoir 38% full, this was such a great spot!! Every site on the west campground has great views and they're very spread out. Bathrooms were clean and always stocked with fresh tp. It was pretty windy at times (rip our canopy) and buggy at night but overall a solid place to camp.

    Redstone Campground

    Quiet and Great Views

    We love Redstone! The sites are spacious and private. Running water and showers and a home run when you’ve been on the road for a while. There is electric a water at the sites in the osgood area. The hummingbirds are incredible and it’s walking distance to town and propaganda pie! Easy river access as well.

    Silver Queen Campground

    The Best

    Silver Queen did not disappoint! It was absolutely beautiful right in the river with Mountain View’s and the cleanest pit toilets I have ever seen. There is a water spigot and dumpster on site. Only 8 sites that are spaced out so it feels private. Super quiet spot. We will definitely be back!
