Best Campgrounds in Georgia

We have camped every Ga State Park but four. Hard to beat Cloudland. Large, tons of activities, well-maintained without losing its outdoors credentials. Most trails are moderate to strenuous because of elevation gain and roots/rocks. The Cave tour is a must, but prepare to get dirty. The West Rim campground is VASTLY superior with tons of privacy, tree cover, great terraces at most sites, with the ones outside ones being the best. Despite being there for the 4th of july, it was quiet. The downside is that getting to the main parts of the park are a drive away or a 2 mile hike with elevation. The East Rim campground is the thing of nightmares - sites on top of each other, no vegetation, no trees, right next to road, zero privacy, but next to outlooks. A couple of the sites towards the back looked ok. Anyway, if you’re an avid outdoors person, this and Black Rock are the best GA parks.

We stayed here in June, Thursday through Monday, two people with a tent. The experience was... memorable, though not always for the right reasons. 

The bathhouses are something out of a post-apocalyptic travel journal— rusted fixtures, broken tiles, and enough cockroaches and spiders to start a nature documentary. Yes, they are“cleaned” occasionally, but whatever’s happening isn’t winning the war. They’re not just in the mist of past centuries— they’re lost in a heavy, choking fog. 

Facilities are very limited, and it’s clear this campground wasn’t designed with tent campers in mind. You’ll wait in line for restrooms, and you won’t enjoy it. 

The sites themselves? Old, worn, and could desperately use even a single coat of fresh paint— but the lawns are mowed, and the forest is real. If you value privacy, you’ll love the layout: each site is tucked deep into the woods, with excellent space and seclusion.

 But beware: the gate is locked shut from 10 PM to 8 AM, no exceptions unless the elderly host personally deems your emergency worthy. Installing a simple keypad would save everyone time and dignity. 

Starlink users: take note— if the lake is high, the shoreline disappears, and with it, any chance of a clear shot to the sky. Reception through the trees was very poor. 

Wildlife is busy here— armadillos, raccoons, and rabbits all feel quite at home on your tent pad. It’s charming, if you’re into that kind of thing. 

The lake sees constant activity: motorboats, water skiing, even boats creeping along at night. It’s not peaceful water. If you came to paddle in silence or sleep early, this might not be your dream spot— unless the noisy party crowd is your own.

This is a great place to camp, we enjoy staying here they also have some tent sites, wifi is a bit spotty which is to be expected since everyone is trying to use it so either use your hotspot or a mobile internet provider and you will be fine, dog park was well kept, playground has plenty of options for the little ones, the splash pad was a hit for our little ones as they enjoyed it, check in was a breeze as the office folks are very informative as to the surrounding place’s you can visit all really at a relatively short drive…your close to your neighbor but not to close “if that makes since”….will definitely stay here again

Check in staff very friendly Site 32 - Nice level site. Plenty of room for us. Back in is not straight so it takes alittle bit of maneuvering(that maybe why it was one of the last few sites available a week out). Very close to the lakeshore. Morning and afternoon shade, otherwise pretty direct sun overhead around noon.

The restroom and shower facilities were clean. Plenty of hot water. Gave it 4 stars only because I thought the swim beach could have been more clear of stuff that washed up. Otherwise a great campground. Would definitely stay here again!
