Ocmulgee Wildlife Management Area, managed by the state of Georgia, gives campers free access to a designated primitive campground set alongside several small fishing lakes in central Georgia. The park divides into two sections: the upper section holds the camping spots, while the lower section contains three or four lakes that draw anglers throughout the day. Camping is free and stays are permitted up to 14 days, with no hookups available. Fire rings are provided, but trash must be packed out.
Water access and fishing are central to the experience here. Largemouth bass are catch-and-release only, and day fishing licenses can be purchased digitally with the T-Mobile signal that reviewers have confirmed reaches two bars of 5G on-site. A covered pavilion with four picnic tables overlooks the lake, and flush toilets with hot water are available roughly 200 yards away. Note that tap water at the campground is not always potable, so bringing your own drinking water is advisable.
Crowd levels tend to stay low overnight. One visitor reported being the only camper, with fishing groups clearing out by dark. Grass at the campground can grow high, and camping is restricted to one side of the road. J A. sums up the overnight atmosphere as "beautiful peaceful and quiet." Campers looking for hookups or developed amenities will find those at nearby options like Woodland RV Resort & Campground to the east. Spring visits tend to offer active wildlife sightings, including deer, birds, and alligators along the water.
