Floating Heaven is a treehouse site (not an option to include in the templated description). You can sleep in the smssll, zinc-roof covered 'casita' which can accommodate two adults and two (small) children. Or you can sleep on the deck platform in a hammock (we have one free one), a tent (bring your own or rent our 2- and 4-person tents), or in a sleeping bag(s). One platform is 10 x 10 ft. and the other is 10 x 12 ft. Eight trees pass through the platforms, located 21 feet off the ground. A sturdy low-riser step leads you up (no climbing necessary). An acre of heavily forested trees and a meadow surround the site. The term, floating heavy, refers to the tree-anchor bolts that allow the platforms to "float" when the tree canopies (60 feet tall) move in the wind. We'll get you going with some kindling and a few logs; lots of down branches and tree trunks on the property for making a nice bonfire, or you can use a small fire pit (metal) for a cozier setting. We have tables, chairs, a very slow drip-camp shower (unheated), a port-a-johnny, urinal on the top deck, and a full-port-a-johnny for #1 and #2 on the ground. There is a charcoal grill for your use at no charge. . There is also a 3-prong adapter for charging up your phones or using other electric devices. Ours is an ex-urban location; you are just two miles from Virginia Tech but you are nestled under a nice hardwood canopy.

Please arrive before sunset so we can show you around; after all, it is a treehouse and there are safety issues you should be apprised of. ***You will forfeit your reservation if you arrive after 9 p.m***. While 6 people is the maximum, the standard book rate includes 4 campers; additional campers over 12 years old should pay $15 a person. Parents must take care that their children obey the safety features. There are trails around the property that are nicely graded and gravel-covered.

Smith Mountain Lake Campgrounds' Site Types:

Two-bedroom frame - Two bedrooms; wood frame; one queen bed; two singles; foldout couch; ceramic tile floors with carpeted bedrooms. Two-bedroom cabins have a bathroom with shower.

Two-bedroom frame waterview - Two bedrooms; wood frame; one queen bed; two singles; foldout couch; ceramic tile floors with carpeted bedrooms. The two-bedroom cabins have a bathroom with shower.

Three-bedroom frame - Three bedrooms; wood frame; two queen beds; two singles; foldout couch; ceramic tile floors with carpeted bedrooms. The three bedroom cabin has two bathrooms (one universally accessible shower; the other has a tub). The three-bedroom cabins are meant to sleep six. Eight are allowed, but this relies on the use of a fold-out sofa for the extra two people.

Although the only fully universally accessible cabin in the park is cabin 7, numerous cabins, while not fully accessible, are better suited for customers having disabilities. Because of hilly terrain, all cabins other than cabin 7 have steps. Cabins 15, 17 and 19 have two steps, cabins 10, 13 and 20 have three steps, cabin 14 has four steps, and cabins 6, 12 and 18 have five steps. The remaining cabins are unsuitable for those with disabilities because of numerous steps or steep grades leading into the cabin.

Bunkhouse

Camping Lodge (bunkhouse) - no weekly requirement.

The park has a camping lodge (bunkhouse), which is not a full service lodge, for rent. It's a two-room trailer with seven bunk beds ( five in one room and two in another), a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a coffee pot and air conditioning. It has no heating. The bunkhouse has a has a porch and a large covered deck with two picnic table, two other tables and eight chairs. It also has a charcoal grill and a fire ring. Smoking, portable heaters and cooking, except with the microwave oven, are not permitted in the lodge. There's a fire hydrant next to the lodge in the parking lot. Four vehicles are permitted with rental of the lodge; the daily parking fee must be paid for additional vehicles. RVs and trailers may not be parked in the bunk house parking lot; there's an overflow parking lot about 100 yards away.

There have been many changes over the years in lighting and passageways, but the beauty of this cavern has entertained thousands from then `til now. Dixie Caverns is open for tours 363 days a year.

Dixie Caverns is 2 minutes off of I-81 at Exit 132, and close to shopping, restaurants, garages and conveniently open all year.

VA Tech is approx. 35 miles away.  Radford  University approx. 40 miles away.  Roanoke College is approximately 6 miles away - 

making Dixie Caverns Campground an easy drive from I-81 or Rt. 460

 

And don't forget Martinsville and Bristol Speedways are an easy drive after a RELAXING rest at our campground.
