Chickahominy WMA

Yes, camping is allowed at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area. There are a few designated camping spots at the end of the main access road, just before reaching the boat launch into the river. The camping area consists of large grassy areas that can accommodate both RVs and tents. The sites are not well-marked and are essentially pull-off areas. Since facilities are minimal, be prepared for primitive camping with few amenities. The campsites don't offer much shade, so plan accordingly during summer months.

Chickahominy WMA's 5,217 acres of heavily forested land provides habitat for diverse wildlife typical of Virginia's eastern woodlands. The area borders the Chickahominy River, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially during spring, summer, and fall when the landscape is lush and beautiful. Visitors might encounter various bird species, white-tailed deer, small mammals, and possibly reptiles and amphibians near the wetland areas. The river environment attracts aquatic and wading birds. For optimal wildlife viewing, early morning and evening hours typically offer the best chances for sightings, particularly outside of hunting seasons.

Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area does not have designated shooting ranges on the property. The WMA is primarily used for hunting during season (except Sundays when hunting is prohibited), but does not feature formal sight-in ranges or target shooting facilities. Hunters should arrive with properly sighted firearms and follow all Virginia wildlife management regulations regarding firearm use. For target practice before hunting season, visitors should seek established shooting ranges in the surrounding region.
