Small area but a place to stay

This place way interesting. We just visited for the afternoon. There is a two grassy areas that have maybe four sites total. No shade. I didn’t see a beach for chilling and kayaking on. Great view from the dock. But you can’t see the water from The camp site.

Primitive Minimalist

The Chickahominy WMA has 5217 acres of mainly forested acres of mainly forested land and borders the Chickahominy River. During hunting season you will encounter several hunters except on Sunday(no hunting on Sunday). It is heavily wooded and during the spring summer and fall it will beautiful all leafed out.  There are actually several spots to camp and there are spots large enough for RV's. The grass has been mowed but if it has rained I would check the site before pulling off the road. There is a boat ramp with a nice sized parking lot, no toilet, no water, no trash.

Pack it in, Pack it out. Verizon 2 bars

Very secluded (Permit required..?)

Stayed here a night after heading to Williamsburg and jamestown, at the end of the road is a boat launch into the river and just before are the "camp sites" (just a large area of grass off to the side w/ parked rv's) but i dont see why you couldn't pitch a tent. Not very well marked just pull off and park in the grass alongside the road. I found a really nice spot in the woods though on the other side of the road, if you go all the way down to the boat launch, there will be a site on your right hand side that has an amazing view just one site about a quarter mile through the woods and you have your own little spot! opposite the rv parking. Other than that its pretty rustic, no fire rings or picnic benches. Looks like an area kids come to on the weekends, there was a small camp with a trash bucket someone had brought out and sadly, freshly downed trees and quite a few of them. The view here though was unbelievable! WMA wildlife management area's require a permit, but i only stayed one night everything was just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is camping allowed in Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area?

Yes, camping is allowed at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area. There are a few designated camping spots at the end of the main access road, just before reaching the boat launch into the river. The camping area consists of large grassy areas that can accommodate both RVs and tents. The sites are not well-marked and are essentially pull-off areas. Since facilities are minimal, be prepared for primitive camping with few amenities. The campsites don't offer much shade, so plan accordingly during summer months.

What wildlife can visitors expect to see at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area?

Chickahominy WMA's 5,217 acres of heavily forested land provides habitat for diverse wildlife typical of Virginia's eastern woodlands. The area borders the Chickahominy River, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially during spring, summer, and fall when the landscape is lush and beautiful. Visitors might encounter various bird species, white-tailed deer, small mammals, and possibly reptiles and amphibians near the wetland areas. The river environment attracts aquatic and wading birds. For optimal wildlife viewing, early morning and evening hours typically offer the best chances for sightings, particularly outside of hunting seasons.

Are there shooting ranges at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area?

Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area does not have designated shooting ranges on the property. The WMA is primarily used for hunting during season (except Sundays when hunting is prohibited), but does not feature formal sight-in ranges or target shooting facilities. Hunters should arrive with properly sighted firearms and follow all Virginia wildlife management regulations regarding firearm use. For target practice before hunting season, visitors should seek established shooting ranges in the surrounding region.

What trails and access points are available at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area?

Chickahominy WMA spans over 5,200 acres of predominantly forested land with access to the Chickahominy River. The main access point includes a boat launch at the end of the access road, allowing visitors to enter the river for fishing and kayaking. While there aren't extensively marked trail systems, the heavily wooded nature of the WMA provides opportunities for hiking through the natural terrain. The property is navigable but primarily designed for hunting access rather than recreational trail use. For water activities, the dock area provides a good entry point.
