Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort & Cabins

      One of Our Favs

Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort is easy to find near I-90, but it sits far enough off the highway that road noise isn’t too bad. This is a very nice campground (CG) with exceptional customer service. The morning of our arrival, the office called to ask whether we wanted to switch sites so we wouldn’t have to move after extending our stay by two days. They recommended Site 71, an end-cap site, and we gladly accepted. We also completed the online pre-check-in, which made arrival quick and simple. We proceeded to pull-through Site 71 with FHUs; the long pad had multiple sewer connection options, which was super convenient, and the utilities were located near the middle of the pad. There’s a nice cement patio and picnic table, and the site was plenty long enough for our 40' toy hauler with the back patio down while still leaving room to park our F450. Campground WiFi was okay at 13.5 Mbps. We had 2 bars of Verizon 5G and 1 bar on T-Mobile, which wasn’t strong enough to support our T-Mobile Home Internet, so we put Starlink on the roof and, with few mature trees near our site, had a clear sky shot and excellent performance. The CG has nice showers, laundry, a dog park, and good walking areas. Overall, this is one of the best private campgrounds we’ve stayed.

      Heartland RV Park And Cabins

      Nice Place

Long term stay. Great rates. All staff very courteous. All facilities clean and well maintained. Level gravel pull through sites of varying sizes. Each site has grass area except on the new end. It is very close to the highway, so there is a lot of road noise. Other than that our stay here has been excellent. Good cell reception. Standard campground wifi, but good reception. Haven't used cable. Nice enclosed dog exercise area. Playground for kiddies. It is off season, so pool, tennis court and some other facilities closed right now. We will be leaving the end of November, but after having been at several campgrounds over the past 2 years, this will be our go to place in the Rapid City area from now on.

      Crystal Park Campground

Okay with a Lot of Potential

Arrived and parked at the new Gateway Travel Center in Newcastle to check in. We have been coming to this area for an annual hunting trip for 8 years. We stayed here two years ago and upfront its not the best of campgrounds (CG), but looks like some improvements are being attempted. This CG is still the best option for the area. The travel center and RV park used to be an outdoor movie theater back when. You now check in inside the travel center’s convenience store. You go to the check out counter, fill out your paperwork, and get your assigned site. We were traveling with another RV and were assigned sites 30 and 28, which are FHUs with 50/30 AMP. Technically there were sites 31 and 29 adjacent to our sites. The sites were small enough as it was, but if someone would have come in beside us into site 31, we would have been literally an arms length away from each other.  With both of us in our party having fifth wheels with slide outs on both sides, there was no way anyone could have pulled into site 29 between us. However, no one was placed next to us during our 5 day stay and we believe the new CG management wouldn't purposely place someone next to a big rig. We recommend that once you receive your assigned site, go scope it out. They were putting in new site signs but had not gotten to our site so the number was written on the electric box with a permanent marker. Some of the sites here are standalone 30 AMP or 20 AMP, perfect for travel vans.  There is no WiFi in the CG but the travel center has free unsecured Wifi near the pumps and in the convenience store that also has a Taco Johns. The last time we stayed here, there were pipeline workers and the CG was full. This time there were only a few transient workers. They have two pretty nice tent camping areas in the grass and their restroom/shower/laundry facility was well maintained and clean. They have 2 washers and 2 dryers that were very reasonably priced at $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry. The RV sites do not have picnic tables nor fire rings but the the tent areas have a few. Every morning and evening we had wild turkeys and mule deer roaming around the CG. With the Fountain Inn Hotel and the RV Park pretty much co-located, this CG made a good choice for our RV and hotel staying hunting group.

Four Mile Old West Town Campground

      Simple

50amps full hookups are for those who are long term. No shower house. Sites are pull through our 32 ft 5th wheel and 250 had plenty of space in the spot. But sites are close to each other. 30amp I noticed all had full hookups. Sites are level. The place is quite, right off hwy 16, and a great shot of the mountains. It’s a good place to stay if you aren’t spending time at your camp site but visiting around.

Black Hawk Creek RV Park & Cabins

Mountain View RV Park & Campground

      Nice Campground

We appreciated the pre arrival phone call to confirm we were still coming and letting us know our site was open whenever we wanted to arrive. Check in was very easy and informative concerning what to do in the area. We then proceeded to FHUs pull-through site 9. Utilities were conveniently located to include outstanding water pressure so use a reducer. Since we were only staying here two days, we decided to opt for the$2.00 a day additional charge for cable versus putting out our satellite dish. We received over 60 channels that worked great. Campground WiFi was satisfactory and we got 2 to 3 bars on Verizon. Along with the owners/camp hosts being very friendly, the office had a great store that carries not only RV supplies but other novelty items and they do propane tank fills. The campground sites were very well laid out. We visited at the end of the season, so a lot of their sites were already closed up in preparation for shutting down for the year. The back in and upper level pull-through sites had more spacing between sites versus the lower level pull-throughs where we stayed. The park was far enough from I-90 so there was basically no road noise. The fenced in dog park was a nice addition. Being only 30 minutes from Devil's Tower, this campground was very convenient to see local sights. Also take a tour of Sundance, this is where The Sundance Kid got his name and he had been jailed in the old courthouse. This park is a winner whether you need a nice overnight stop or a place to hang out for a while. We would definitely camp here again.

      Hart Ranch RV Resort

      Great RPI Resort campground

If you have an RPI membership, this place is a no-brainer. It’s a huge and well maintained RV resort with tons of family friendly amenities. Onsite restaurant and convenience store with gas station. Large pool with hot tubs. Tennis, basketball, pickleball, and shuffleboard courts. Mini golf and an activity center that will loan you a variety of sports gear and well as rent bikes and golf carts. A massive dog park. Our kids also attended a 2 day horse camp onsite which was very fun for them and very reasonably priced. The list of activities is endless. Tons of kids biking around and playing, so easy for kids to make friends. They also have cabin rentals and a few tent sites. There’s a weekly rodeo held onsite during peak season. It’s 15 minutes from Rapid City and close to the Black Hills. If you are looking for a base camp to explore this area, Hart Ranch is a great choice.

Elk Mountain Campground — Wind Cave National Park

      Nice Setting

Elk Mnt -Wind Cave NP 10/24

(72 yr olds in 27’ trailer.)

Overall Rating: 4 for stopover convenience, setting, and exploring the NP Price 2024: $ 6(the off season, no water price) w interagency pass Security: no Usage during visit: light - this cg is shutting down in a few days. Only 1 loop is now open. Visual Privacy Between Adjacent Sites: no Site Spacing: pull over sites in Loop B were 50+ feet apart.
Pad surface: gravel Reservations: yes Campground Noise: quiet Outside Road Noise: none Through Traffic in campground: none Electric Hookup: no Sewer Hookup: no Dump Station: no Potable Water Available: yes, but currently turned off Bathroom: pit toilet is clean and open.
Showers: no Pull Throughs: Some pullovers- in b loop have nice view of grassland rolling hills. However, not all will allow for a driver’s side slide. Our site, #15 did have room, barely. Cell Service (AT&T): no bars. Setting: attractive rolling grasslands and pine forest. Recent Weather: highs in the 70s. Solar: yes Insects: none Host: none this time of year.
Rig Size: some sites will probably allow for a 40’ or so trailer. Check carefully when reserving on rec dot gov.
Sites: 16, 20, 18, 15: I like these pull over sites, because they have a nice view of the rolling grasslands. However, in our site, number 15, we were able to barely get our slide out without it protruding over the campground road. Some of the other pullover sites in B loop offer less room for a safe slide out usage. Other loops have wider pullover sites for trailers with slide outs. I took pictures of some of these sites with their numbered posts.

      Black Hills RV Park

      Dog run and convenient

Unable to reserve online for same night. Called and assured space available never asked name, etc. Luckily the spot was near back of campground with very short walk to stunning view. All sites gravel with picnic tables. Sites are close together but due to early Oct, they tried to park RVs every other space in middle of campground. Many long term residents around outsides of park. 2 small Dog runs in front; grass dog walking area in back. Next to Fort Hays, home of $0.99 cowboy pancake breakfast and Dances with Wolves film set. Convenient as Mt Rushmore is only 20 miles & 36 miles to Crazy Horse Memorial. Extremely clean toilet and bath house!!

    Guide to Silver City

Campgrounds near Silver City, South Dakota provide access to the Black Hills at elevations ranging from 3,300 to 5,000 feet, with summer temperatures typically reaching the mid-80s during peak season. Most RV parks in the region operate seasonally from May through mid-October due to winter snowfall that can make access difficult, with many parks closing completely during the colder months.

    What to do

Wildlife viewing at Custer State Park: Located just 30 minutes from Fort Welikit Family Campground, visitors can observe buffalo herds at the Wildlife Visitor Center, particularly active at dusk. "We would've liked to be closer to the sites The Black Hills provides but we became accustomed to hour long drives or more to Custer for all the must-do things there!" notes one camper at Heartland RV Park.

Hiking at Sylvan Lake: Several trails begin at this scenic spot about 4 miles from Horse Thief Campground. "Perfect campground nestled between Custer State Park and Mt Rushmore. 3 miles from Sylvan Lake and all the hiking you could ever want," reports a visitor. The area offers trails suitable for different fitness levels.

Bike the Mickelson Trail: This 109-mile converted railroad bed runs through the Black Hills with access points near Hill City. "Hop on your bike and ride 6 miles up to Crazy Horse!" suggests one camper who stayed at Horse Thief Campground, noting the trail's proximity to several camping areas.

    What campers like

Central location for attractions: Many campers appreciate the strategic positioning of RV campgrounds near Silver City, South Dakota. "Heartland RV Park is located relatively close to Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore and many other tourist sites," mentions one visitor, highlighting the convenience for day trips.

Night sky viewing opportunities: The minimal light pollution in less developed areas creates ideal conditions for stargazing. At Horse Thief Campground, a camper noted: "It is off a major highway so nighttime is quiet. There's a mix of tree and open areas. The open area is great for night sky watching."

Wildlife encounters: Holy Smoke Resort and other nearby campgrounds offer frequent wildlife sightings. "Surrounded by mountains and deer walk right through campground," reports one camper about their experience at another nearby park, showcasing the natural integration of campgrounds into the wildlife habitat.

    What you should know

Road noise varies significantly: Proximity to highways affects the camping experience at several RV campgrounds near Silver City. "This park is situated right on a four-lane highway. We were almost as far from the highway as was possible and the highway noise is unreal," reports a camper at Heartland RV Park and Cabins.

Site levelness challenges: Many Black Hills campgrounds require effort to level RVs. "The sites could use some re-leveling but other than that, it was great!" notes a visitor at Holy Smoke Resort. At another campground, a visitor mentioned: "Due to the topography you will have to do some leveling."

Fire restrictions vary by location: Not all campgrounds permit open flames. "The sites were gravel and the grass is not well established so when it rains it get kinda muddy," one camper noted about site conditions that can affect fire safety rules. Always check current restrictions before arrival.

    Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Several campgrounds offer dedicated children's areas. "The kids loved playing catch in the large field. Showers were clean, modern and had hot water," reports a visitor at Horse Thief Campground, adding that they provide "horseshoe pits and basketball court" for recreation.

Entertainment options: Some parks organize regular activities for guests. "This place is fun with unique flare. On site restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner with live music each night," notes a visitor at Heartland RV Park, describing entertainment amenities particularly valuable for families.

Kid-friendly attractions: Beyond campgrounds, nearby attractions cater to younger visitors. "Kids loved the on-site 'gold mining' activity!" reported a family staying at Horse Thief Campground and RV Resort, pointing to activities that engage children while camping.

    Tips from RVers

Campsite selection strategy: When booking at busier parks, request spots away from high-traffic areas. "If we ever stayed there again we would ask for a space on a further loop, as this was a high traffic area!" advised an RVer at Fort Welikit Family Campground.

Prepare for limited privacy: Site spacing varies across RV campgrounds in Silver City and surrounding areas. "The sites are smallest I have been to and there is absolutely no privacy," reports a camper at Heartland RV Park, suggesting expectations should be set accordingly for social camping.

Utilities and services: Camping near Silver City offers varying levels of hookup reliability. "Good wi-fi, very nice owner and neatly kept," noted a visitor to Holy Smoke Resort, while another camper mentioned, "We had a few instances where the shower had no hot water" at a different location, highlighting the importance of backup options.
