Directions

If you are coming from Denver area or I25, it is better if you take the Lusk Exit off the interstate, which is Hwy 18, when you get through Lusk, you will come up to Hwy 85. Turn left, there, then that will take you to Hwy 16 in Newcastle, WY. Most directions say to go through Edgemont but although that is a little shorter, it is has more hills and curves. Turn right on Hwy 16 , you will go past Jewel Cave, then we will be the next campground you see on the right. If you are coming from the East on I90, you want to take exit 61 off the Interstate which will become Truck 16. Stay on that road until you get to Hwy 16. Turn left and you need to stay to the right and go through Hill City to Custer. When you get in Custer, turn right at the first stop light you come to and we will be located on the Left. If you are coming up from the south you will be on 385. When you come to the first stoplight you will need to turn left and we are 3.5 miles on the left. Great

The staff are very accommodating and friendly. We came a day early and did not care for the site they assigned us, so they let us drive around and pick the perfect one! It made ALL THE DIFFERENCE!♡ bathrooms are clean and very nice. Laundry also.

Nice campground tucked back in the trees

Nice sites. Lots of shade. Bathrooms clean. Laundry facilities are great. (~$5 a load) close to wind cave and jewel cave NP. Not far from town. Close to Mount Rushmore and crazy horse. Staff is pleasant. Nice general store on site. Sites are decent sized. Our rig is 37’ 5th wheel. Full hookups. Water slide was closed when we were here and didn’t use the pool but looks nice.

Nice campground in the trees and close to Custer.

We had a great stay. The campground is small and family owned. Staff were nice and we had a shaded spot with few neighbors and no noise issues. We have a 20ft trailer and it was a bit tight to back it in our spot between two trees but we managed in one go. close to all things to do in Southern Black Hills.

Just pulled in…

But already I see several children playing and laughing having a great time, very nice enclosed play area with see saws swings and slides. Log cabins, nice layout, not at all a bad vibe. Seems everyone here is very friendly which isn’t always what we have experienced. They have a dog mascot who is very friendly. I’ll definitely want to come back and stay again.

Great stay

This was our home base for our South Dakota trip. The owners and workers keep this place really well. We used the showers, camp store (ice cream and soda), laundry ($2 wash, $1 dry), firewood, and the pool! We really liked the layout of the campground and differing terrain. We were afraid it would be like the “parking lot” campgrounds we saw coming into the black hills. Even though had neighbors, the site was deep and we were able to find quiet any time we needed it.

Staying in the Black Hills National Forest is a great experience, quiet and calm. So glad you enjoyed it. As you pointed out it's; definitely not a parking lot situation. We feel lucky to be working and living here. hope you can stay with us again and thanks so much for the great review.

Beautiful campground and friendly staff

Wish we could have stayed here longer but South Dakota weather was saying otherwise. We will definitely come back again! Many things for kids of all ages to do and we loved the campground dog, Shimmer!!!

Disappointed

Stayed overnight , paid online but asked for GS discount upon arrival . I was given the rate but then was told as it was only 1 day I shouldn’t have been given it Went to site , the electrical box smoked , which happens , cable Tv was so statically we couldn’t watch. Called office and was given another site , same problem with the cable but the site was good. After leaving I checked my credit card and found I was charged the price difference between the 2 sites !!!

So sorry that shouldn't have happened and not sure how it happened. Replying to this quite a while since you stayed. If you contacted us we could find out what happened. Again so sorry..

Great place to stay while visiting Mt. Rushmore

This campground was great for all types of camping. They had full hookups to dry camping. It was on the out skirts of Custer, SD but away from the busier areas. It was close to many other places to visit like Crazy Horse, the hot springs, Wind Cave NP, Jewel Cave NP and Custer State park. They had a swimming pool and a large water slide for a small fee. The best part was you were allowed to have a campfire. The one bad thing was the spaces were a little too close for my personal likings. Over all it was a great campground.

Love this place

My family spent 7 days camping here. The location was great...It is an easy park to get to and it is not crowded. The bathrooms and entire campground are clean. The owners have bikes around the campground that you can borrow. The owners are so sweet and helpful. We look forward to returning here to camp.

Fun for the kids, but very packed

We really appreciated all the amenities this campground had to offer! Full hook-ups, laundry, shower houses, store, pool w/slide, bikes and the playground. Our site was pleasantly big compared to some of the others. We were all pretty packed in, but the way the sites are stacked makes them feel a little more private. The kids had a blast at the pool, playground and riding the free bikes--although they were in poor condition. This campground was a good location for a home base while exploring the area. The WiFi wasn’t very good, but we could occasionally get a little reception. My Sprint phone had no cell service. My husband had an encounter with a VERY snippy employee when he questioned the date they had us down to leave on. It’s a long story, but the bottom line is that no matter the situatIon, or who‘s at fault, treating a guest rudely is not acceptable! Everyone else seemed nice enough, but this employee definitely put a bad taste in our mouths for the place. We likely won’t return.

Great place to recharge/fill

We tend to do more secluded campsites for a few days and then find a place like Beaver Lake to plug in for a night, drain our tanks, and refill our fresh water. We were very happy with the site we had here and will stop back again in the future. Short drive to the Jewel Cave which is great because it took us 2 attempts to get tickets to see it as it sells out fast. After not getting into Jewel Cave the first day we hiked Black Elk Peak and then stayed here to wake up early to be at the cave when it opened.

Great campground!

We have stayed at this campground many times over the years and have never been disappointed! The owners are wonderful and go out of their way to help their customers when needed. Very quiet area, extremely clean restrooms and showers. Play area for young children, and even a fenced area for dogs to play. I highly recommend this campground for anyone visiting the Black Hills of South Dakota!!!

Great location

We just spent a week in this wonderful campground. It was VERY quiet when we arrived, but we were a week ahead of most people. The campground is great! The staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The bathrooms and showers were exceptionally clean. We used their showers even though we have one in the trailer because I prefer a shower, not a rinse sometimes v:) The location is close to Mount "Mushmore" as our granddaughter called it, and close to so many other things. We even took a day trip over to the Badlands and also a day trip over to Devil's Tower in Wyoming....We will go back again next year!

Great location, lots of amenities

On a 3+ week road trip, we stayed at Beaver Lake Campground for 4 nights and used this location as our ‘home base’ for the entire extended area in South Dakota: Badlands NP, Rapid City, Black Hills national forest, Mt. Rushmore, the very large Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, and the variety of scenic byways that connect them. It’s about 90 minutes away from the Badlands, but it was worth it to drive back out that direction rather than a.) having to camp at a separate site for only 1 night and b.) having to camp in that environment, which is generally much hotter and more arid than the Custer area within the Black Hills.

The campground is located about 3 miles outside the main drag of Custer, which is a great location for exploring the area. It is large and predominantly an ‘RV’ style campground, though they also have some small cabins that you can rent. They have laundry on site (which is nice when you’re on a road trip), a small camp store with everything that you would need, and the campground hosts are very nice and accommodating. The bathhouses weren’t the greatest (a little dirty and the woman’s shower stall in the bath room near the pool had a broken shower hose which sprayed me in the face when I was showering - quite annoying!), but they were conveniently placed. The pools looked nice, but with so much to do in the area we honestly did not spend any time in the campground during swimming hours so I can’t comment much on them. In general, everyone that we met at the campground seemed extremely nice, our particular camp site was beautiful, large, and well-situated, and the campground had everything that we needed (and more) in a fantastic location. Pretty close to perfect!
