Bordered by Black Hills National Forest, Horse Thief Campground and RV Resort sits a few miles off the highway outside Hill City, South Dakota, giving it a quieter character than campgrounds closer to the main tourist corridors. The access road is rough in places, so drivers of larger rigs should approach with care. Once inside, the layout opens up considerably, with gravel RV sites that are mostly pull-through, reasonably level, and well-maintained, plus tent sites scattered toward the back where some separation from the RV section is possible.
Campers consistently flag cleanliness as a standout feature. Kim B. describes the campground as "surrounded by mountains and deer walk right through," and the hillside behind the property has also produced turkey and, reportedly, mountain goat sightings. The RV sites in the front section run closer together, while tent sites toward the back tend to offer more room. Some tent pads slope noticeably, so campers who are particular about sleeping flat should ask staff for a recommendation at check-in.
Amenities include full hookups for RVs, a heated pool, two bathhouses with showers and laundry, a store stocking firewood and basic supplies, horseshoe pits, a basketball court, and a gold-panning activity that gets attention from younger campers. Cell service is limited to one bar of LTE on Verizon at best, and the campground WiFi handles light browsing but struggles with uploads or downloads. Campers relying on connectivity should plan accordingly. The Hill city/ Needles HWY KOA is just north for those comparing nearby options.
The campground's location makes it a functional base for the central Black Hills. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake, and the Mickelson Trail are all within roughly 15 miles. Gay P. notes the showers were "clean, modern and had hot water," and the staff draw repeated praise across reviews for being approachable and helpful. The season runs May 15 through October 1, with reservations available. Campers who want to explore camping near Hill City will find this part of the Hills has several options clustered close together, making it worth comparing sites before booking.
