You’re not likely to meet King T’Challa or Captain America at this Wakonda, but you can enjoy enough camping fun, water recreation, and wildlife watching to make you feel like you’re visiting that mystical Marvel realm. Located just 10 minutes south of La Grange, Wakonda State Park is 1000 acres of sand prairies, shady woods, and six scenic lakes. Interestingly, the park landscape is not entirely natural. Composed of ancient glacial gravel deposits, the area was excavated extensively from the 1920s through the 1980s for road-building materials. Once the gravel deposits were exhausted, the area was restored into a recreation area. In addition to providing an outdoor recreation space for locals and visitors, the park is a popular birding area for its thousands of resident and migrating waterfowl. 

 Visitors to Wakonda State Park have access to more than 80 tent and RV campsites in two areas. The larger Boulder Lake Campground features basic, electric, and full-hookup site options. The smaller Wakanda Lake Campground offers only electric-only sites. There are six ADA accessible sites. Each campground provides restrooms and shower houses; the Boulder Lake area also has water faucets, laundry facilities and a dump station; the Wakanda Lake site has a kid’s play area. All campsites are equipped with picnic tables, cooking grills, and lantern posts. Dogs are permitted in the park, but must remain leashed in designated areas. This park accepts reservations; campsites rates are $12–$28/night.

 The main attraction at Wakonda State Park is its six lakes, and all the water recreation they have to offer. Anglers can cast for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill on Agate, Quartz, Jasper and Wakonda lakes; kayak and SUP paddlers can enjoy the water trails on Agate, Jasper and Wakonda lakes. There are two boat launches for putting in motorized watercraft; the others are carry-in only. Kayak rentals are available. For sunbathing and swimming, visitors can spread out blankets at the large sand beach on Wakonda Lake. The park also has more than 7 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking. These are ideal for birdwatching or admiring some of the park’s rare prairie flora.

## Overview

Ray Behrens is a scenic campground and recreation area, conveniently located on the southeastern shores of Mark Twain Lake. Here, visitors can enjoy the perks of the campground, go boating on the lake or explore the area's historic attractions.   
  
Twain, the legendary author, was born in a village beside the lake and grew up in a town about 20 miles down the road.

Mark Twain Lake provides countless opportunities for outdoor recreation - boating, swimming, fishing, picnicking, camping, hiking and hunting to name a few. 

## Facilities

Ray Behrens Campground has three loops: Deer Run, Little Bluestem and Cedar Ridge. All campsites come with electric hookups. Showers and accessible flush toilets are in close proximity of every site. The park also features a marina and playgrounds.

## Natural Features

The Salt River flows through rolling hills of north-central Missouri, where it is dammed to form the 18,000-acre Mark Twain Lake. A variety of recreation areas surround the lake, including the Mark Twain State Park. 

## Nearby Attractions

Beside the lake is the village of Florida, where Mark Twain was born. Twenty-five miles east is the town of Hannibal, where visitors can tour the author's boyhood home.

## Overview

Frank Russell Campground, set near the picturesque Mark Twain Lake, has a location near the dam, providing campers with easy access to the lake, river and surrounding attractions. The campground also features an amphitheater with weekly events in the summer.   
  
The lake's namesake and legendary author and humorist, Mark Twain, was born in a town beside the lake. 

## Recreation

The 32-mile long Joanna Trail is accessible from the campground. Here, horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers can enjoy the rough and varied terrain that meanders along the northern banks of the lake, across bluffs and over hills.   
  
Campfire programs are provided every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 

## Facilities

Adjacent to the campground, equestrian campers can make use of the shaded horse stalls. Campsites are equipped with electric hookups, paved parking, grills and picnic tables. Other amenities include showers, playgrounds and vault toilets.

## Natural Features

Mark Twain Lake is sourced by the Salt River in northeast Missouri. The Clarence Cannon Dam sits on the eastern edge of the lake, providing flood control and hydroelectricity to the region.

The David C. Berti Shooting Range is below the dam and the M.W. Boudreaux Visitor Center is located on the south end of the Dam.
