Families traveling in skoolies: think very carefully before booking this KOA.
We are traveling with our family and small children in a legally registered and insured school bus conversion. We had a reservation, showed up expecting a normal campground check-in, and instead were told we could not stay because our skoolie “didn’t look like an RV.” I offered to show the employee our registration and insurance proving that it is an RV. He refused to even look at it. Apparently, at this KOA, one employee’s opinion of what your RV should look like matters more than your reservation, registration, or insurance. That is something families need to know before arriving here after a long day on the road with tired children. Being turned away at check-in because your perfectly legitimate RV doesn’t meet someone’s visual standards is not a minor inconvenience when you are traveling with kids and counting on the campsite you already booked. Thankfully, we found a beautiful Forest Service campground on Lake Tahoe and ended up having a much better experience. The only downside was the wasted fuel, wasted time, and unnecessary drive back into Nevada. If you travel in a newer, expensive, picture-perfect motorhome, this place may be exactly what you are looking for. If you are a family traveling in a skoolie, bus conversion, older RV, or anything outside their preferred image, I would not trust a reservation here to mean you actually have a place to stay. For a company that markets itself around camping and family travel, this was one of the least welcoming campground experiences we have had. Families with young children deserve to know that before they book.
