The sound of Prairie Creek flowing past campsites creates a constant backdrop at this walk-in campground within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Sites are tucked among towering redwoods and dense understory vegetation, with some backing directly to the creek. The campground accommodates RVs up to 27 feet, though tight turns require unhitching for many rigs.
Roosevelt elk regularly graze in the adjacent meadow, particularly during morning and evening hours. Tamara C. notes her site was "situated perfectly along the creek, just under a tree that has huge maple leafs turning the beautiful Autumn colors." The forest canopy filters most sunlight, keeping sites cool and shaded throughout the day. Mosquitoes can be persistent during warmer months.
Multiple hiking trails begin directly from the campground, including routes through old-growth redwood groves and connections to Fern Canyon and the Pacific coast. The visitor center provides trail maps and evening ranger programs on weekends. Patricia O. describes how she "slept peacefully to sounds of the creek running by our site." Equestrian trails wind through the surrounding forest.
Sites include picnic tables and fire rings, with firewood available from camp hosts. Bathrooms offer coin-operated showers, though hot water availability varies. The campground maintains a strict "crumb clean" policy due to wildlife activity. Cell service reaches most areas. The location provides access to both redwood forests and coastal areas within a 45-minute drive.
Reservations help secure creek-side sites, which fill quickly during peak seasons. For those exploring the broader region, campsites near Orick offer additional staging points for redwood country adventures.
