Experience these ancient natural forces up close by exploring the nation’s premier whitewater rafting location, New River Gorge. The New River Gorge National River, part of the United States National Park System, extends 53-miles in southern West Virginia. Along with some of the best paddling in the country, rock climbers flock to the 1,400 established climbs in the sandstone cliffs. 70,000-acres of wilderness offer free riverfront primitive camping spots, while campers who want more amenities can take advantage of several private campgrounds in nearby Fayetteville, WV. 


If you find yourself camping in West Virginia’s New River Gorge in October, you might catch Bridge Day, the world’s largest extreme sports event. Cheer on BASE jumpers as they leap 900-feet from the top of the river’s bridge while you enjoy local food and craft vendors, live music, and great mountain views. 


When planning a trip camping in West Virginia, don’t miss the chance to take in the views from West Virginia’s most famous landmark, Seneca Rocks. Located in the Monongahela National Forest, and renowned for its incredible beauty, this natural landmark rises nearly 900-feet above the North Fork River. Especially well-known in rock climbing circles, the impressive rock formation offers 375 of the most technical mapped climbing routes in the eastern United States. Non-climbers can take in the view from the top by lacing up their boots. The Seneca Rocks Hiking Trail climbs the observation platform and is a day hike suitable for all ages.

The camp has access to nearly 4 miles of wilderness riverfront on a dead end road, and yet just a few miles to the beautiful town of Parsons WV in Tucker County! Home of 19th century tourist towns of Thomas / Davis / and Canaan Valley.

\--> The Dryfork and Blackwater Rivers combine nearby, the pedestrian cable suspension bridge to Hendricks is less than half a mile downstream, the Fernow Experimental Forest is just a mile downstream, and the Monongahela national forest and huge unlogged forests are all around! And Brooklyn Heights Rd. is also a waterfall mecca after any decent rains including right here on the property and very nearby.

Hike, camp, swim, fish, bike tube, kayak, canoe, explore, forage, campfires, beach area fires, relax and enjoy!

\--> Brooklyn Heights Riverfront Campground includes 35 acres of unlogged wilderness forest with roads, trails and 2100 feet of riverfront on the Dry Fork River.

\--> The camp includes 15 camping sites (firepits, slabwood benches, parking, and future picnic tables), 5 primitive shelter cabin sites (10x\`12 lofted barn cabins with hasp for your padlock), and a 10 short term RV sites near the river (RV's 30 foot or less recommended).

\--> Waterfalls, creeks, kayak drop points, swimming, tubing, hiking, fishing, and water recreation abounds.

And the nearby towns of Parsons / Thomas / Davis / and Canaan Valley provide endless entertainment nearby with cafes, breweries, a distillery, music, restaurants and coffee shops, galleries and artwork. Also two state park lodges (Blackwater Falls Lodge, Canaan Valley Lodge), a national wildlife refuge, as well as endless rails to trails hiking trails throughout the county where railroads once ran during the coal and virgin forest harvest days of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And the main street towns are still here and thriving!



Brooklyn Heights Riverfront Campground

Welcome to the scenic, waterfront Cove Run Camp situated along the Tygart River! Cove Run camp provides gated access via a well maintained loose gravel road, which leads to a large clearing that can be used for car, camper, RV, motorhome, and Side x Side / ATV parking. Camps can be established anywhere within the property, with numerous waterfront sites available. Camp rentals can be based on the day, week, month, season, or annually! Campers can rent the entire property, or individual camp sites only. Certain camping accommodations including tents, sleeping pads and air mattresses, sleeping bags, bundled firewood, and camp kitchen items can be available upon request. There are several established trail systems throughout the property, providing excellent hiking, Side x Side & ATV, and Equestrian riding. Large outcrops, creeks, and waterfalls are scattered throughout the property, providing excellent hiking and bouldering. Abundant wildlife viewing! Excellent fishing ground for carp, musky, large mouth bass, pike, croppy, walleye and catfish. Enjoy the Tygart river for swimming, floating, kayaking, or canoeing, all from your private property! Public Cove Run Access is available to the north of the property, where kayakers, canoers, and swimmers can exit the river, or continue your float all the way to Tygart Lake!

## Overview

Gatewood Group Campground is ideally located just two miles from Spruce Knob Lake in the Monongahela Forest, creating an ideal base camp for hikes and wildlife watching.

## Recreation

With over 500 miles of hiking trails, visitors are have many options in the forest, including the Gatewood Nature Trail.   
  
With some of the most beautiful overlooks in the area, Spruce Knob Lake offers fishing and boating opportunities (fish are stocked). No swimming is allowed.   
  
Unobstructed views of the night sky bring stargazer clubs to this spot all summer long.

## Facilities

Three group sites are available that can accommodate up to 20 people each. Picnic tables and campfire rings are provided, as are accessible pit toilets. Drinking water is NOT available in the campground.

## Natural Features

The campground is situated on a ridge in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. The Monongahela Forest extends over the north central highlands of the state, encompassing many of the region's highest peaks. Elevations range from 1,000-4,863 feet, and Gatewood sits at 4,300 feet.   
  
Variations in terrain and precipitation have created one of the most ecologically diverse national forests in the country. 

## Nearby Attractions

Spruce Knob, West Virginia's highest peak, lies just 9 miles from the campground. It overlooks forested ridges and grassy open pastures. Visitors can drive or hike to the top. Rock climbing is also a popular activity.

Gatewood Group

Spruce Knob Lake Campground is tucked in a beautiful hardwood forest less than a mile from Spruce Knob Lake. The campground provides a peaceful setting with easy access to boating on the lake and hiking through the mountainous region. Spruce Knob is the highest peak in West Virginia. A stone and steel observation tower is perched atop the peak, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the area. Recreation Sixty miles of picturesque hiking trails crisscross the region, and the campground provides direct access to the pleasant 1-mile Big Bend River Loop. Trout fishing is available nearby at 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake, and in surrounding creeks. Facilities at the lake include a small boat ramp, parking area and vault toilets. A wooden pier along the shoreline provides barrier-free access to the lake.No swimming is allowed. Facilities The campground has accessible vault toilets and a solar-powered system for drinking water. No electric hookups are available. Firewood is for sale on-site. Natural Features The campground is situated on a wooded ridge overlooking the lake. To the east is 4,863' Spruce Knob. The vegetation atop Spruce Knob has adapted to a harsh, exposed environment. One-sided red spruce deformed by constant exposure to strong westerly winds cling to the high rocky ridges. Blueberry and huckleberry plants cover the ground. Due to its location, the campground may experience cold fogs and strong winds year-round. Little River Dispersed Campsites

Located along the Laurel Fork River between [Laurel Fork North and South Wilderness](https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mnf/recarea/?recid=12367) areas, this primitive campground offers visitors a nice camping opportunity in the Middle Mountain area on the site of an old Civilian Conservation Corps location. Day hiking and backpacking opportunities are available leaving from this campground as well through the [Laurel Fork North and South Wilderness](https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mnf/recarea/?recid=12367).

The best camping near New River Gorge National River is anywhere you can find it. All campsites are primitive, first-come, first-served, and, best of all, free. Backcountry camping works the same way. You can park your van down by the river for free, as long as you’re self-sustaining. Amenities will be minimal at any of the nine campgrounds. Not all campgrounds are drive-in or RV accessible, so verify ahead of time. As long as you follow the park’s ordinances, you can camp here for up to 14 days.
