East Lynn Lake camping offers multiple options for outdoor enthusiasts in Wayne County, West Virginia. The lake sits at approximately 700 feet elevation and covers 1,005 acres with 25 miles of shoreline when at normal pool. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting some campsite access points. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-90°F during peak camping months with higher humidity levels than surrounding areas due to the water influence.
What to do
Kayaking on the lake: Four Coves Campground provides excellent access for paddling activities. "This was such a fun area to do a little nice easy kayaking float down the river it was also a great place to go fishing there are many bluegill and bass in the waters," notes Jill R. from Four Coves Campground.
Riding trails nearby: ATV enthusiasts can access the East Lynn outlaw trails from Pappy's Creekside Camp. "We have stayed at Pappys multiple times this year and each time is better than the last. We tent camp and always have plenty of room. Campground is located right next to the East Lynn outlaw trails. The owner and staff very friendly and even set us up with a local group to show us around," reports one camper.
Disc golf course: Beech Fork State Park offers a complete course for disc golf enthusiasts. "They now have a disc golf course and plenty of trails. Camp store needs more options and there is WiFi there. Old orchard is the only camp section with WiFi," explains Scotty W. from Lake View Campground.
What campers like
Spacious waterfront sites: Many campsites provide direct lake access for fishing and swimming. "The sites are large, each with a fire pit and picnic table. Many are shaded. There are lots of things to do in addition to ranger-led activities. Rental kayaks and paddle boats are available, and a swimming pool and exercise course as well," shares Fred L. from Moxley Branch Campground.
Quiet weekday camping: Campgrounds are significantly less crowded Monday through Thursday. "Monday - Wednesday we had our loop all to ourselves. We were visited by geese, ducks and deer. We didn't have a water hookup at our site and the bathrooms were older but everything was very nice and clean. Once the weekend rolled around it got pretty packed," reports Whistle P. from Four Coves Campground.
Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness receives positive comments from many campers. "The campground was pretty busy over in the rv section but no one bothered us. The bathrooms were the best ones I've ever had at a campground. The store was good. Wood was like 8$. The lake view was pretty good too," states Destiny C. from Beach Fork Lake Lower Bowen.
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly throughout the region. "First the good... Park was clean, employees are very helpful. You can get a spot right next to the lake. Now the bad... Not much at the camp store. Verizon service is non-existent. The WiFi only works when you get within a few feet of the office," explains Jerry S. from Beach Fork Lake Lower Bowen.
Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds operate on limited schedules. East Fork Campground runs from May through October, with full amenities only available during peak season. "We camped at East Fork for 6 nights just before Halloween, enjoyed it. Not a lot to do unless you have a boat, but it's a scenic area," notes Bob M. from East Fork.
Road access challenges: Getting to some campgrounds requires careful driving. "Great campground. Terrible access road," states one succinct review from John S. about Old Orchard Campground, highlighting the sometimes difficult approaches to lakeside camping areas.
Tips for camping with families
Water activities for kids: The creek areas provide safe swimming spots for younger children. "Kids love the creeks on hot days they have so much fun! I definitely would recommend Pappy's to everyone looking for an awesome camping/cabin experience," writes TrailMom from Pappy's Creekside Camp.
Family-friendly organized activities: Beech Fork State Park offers scheduled events. "They also have lots of organized activities for families. My family and I love this campground and usually camp here a few times a year. There are always plenty of great spaces, we have never stayed at a spot that we didn't like," says Kayla H. from Four Coves Campground.
Beach area for supervised swimming: Some areas have designated swimming spots. "I haven't camped here yet but I love their beach area. It's small and easy to keep track of small children. The scenery is beautiful as well," shares Andrea R. about East Fork Campground.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Electric and water options vary by campground. "If you want a place for your kids to play and ride bikes, this is it. Campsites are a little close in some areas but when you are here, you are family!" notes Cathi from Falls Campground, which offers various hookup options.
Site dimensions: RV site sizes vary significantly across the region. "We joined friends for a quick weekend trip. Stayed in site 222, about a 3 block walk to the shower house but 1 block to a bathroom. No sewer or water hookup. Very manicured grounds, clean bathrooms/shower houses," reports Vanessa D. from Four Coves Campground.
Drainage issues: Consider site location during rainy periods. "It was our first stay ever in our RV. Our site was muddy but it did rain 2 out of 3 days. Site 32. The staff was very pleasant and helpful," shares Jerry S. about his experience at a nearby KOA.
