CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

East Lynn Lake in Wayne County, West Virginia provides multiple camping options for outdoor enthusiasts, with both developed campgrounds and primitive sites available. East Fork Campground on the southeastern shore of the lake offers electric hookups, drinking water, and boat access, making it popular for both tent and RV camping. Additional options include Beech Fork State Park approximately 20 miles northwest, with four separate camping areas including Four Coves, Moxley Branch, Lake View, and Old Orchard campgrounds. Pappy's Creekside Camp offers more rustic accommodations with cabin options for those seeking shelter.

Road conditions to campgrounds can be challenging, particularly after rain when creeks may partially flood some campsites. Many facilities are seasonal, with East Fork operating from May to October. "We camped here for 6 nights just before Halloween, enjoyed it. Not a lot to do unless you have a boat, but it's a scenic area," noted one visitor about East Fork Campground. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with Verizon coverage particularly limited at Beech Fork, though AT&T generally works better. Campers should be prepared for limited amenities at more remote locations, with firewood available at most developed campgrounds but shopping options sparse in the immediate vicinity.

The waterfront camping experience ranks highly with visitors to East Lynn Lake and nearby Beech Fork State Park. Lakeside sites provide scenic views of forested hills and convenient water access for fishing and boating activities. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, campers appreciate the natural setting and wildlife viewing opportunities, with several mentioning visits from local waterfowl. "The campground was pretty busy over in the RV section but no one bothered us. The bathrooms were the best ones I've ever had at a campground," shared one Beech Fork visitor. While weekdays tend to be quieter, weekends see significant increases in occupancy, especially during summer months. Bathroom facilities receive mixed reviews across the region, with some recently renovated while others remain more dated but generally clean and functional.

    Farver Acres

Beautiful view, well maintained full hookup site.

This campground is well suited for groups of 3 RVs or less traveling together. The view is fantastic, WIFI is provided(I did not use) with 50 and 30 amp service available. Water pressure is good and the sites are new. Wildlife may visit you from time to time and the area is quiet and secluded. A community fire pit and gas grill are onsite. Firewood is provided and the site is well maintained. The owners are very friendly and quick to respond. We will use again.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Nice small campground

Great campground close to the lake and golf course. Some unleveled sites but overall a good place. Some of the water hookup can be a bit far as well.

    Huntington / Fox Fire KOA

    Nice staff

The sites are tight and we were unlucky to stay when they were fully booked. Lots of noise and talking late into the night. It's all gravel and grass. Probably wouldn't seek this out again, but it was ok for one night.

    Virginia Point Campground

    Tight, easy park

You're parked with rigs on either side of you, but it's clean and friendly with kids playing. It is a neat spot on the river and easy inexpensive stop when traveling through. 50 amp hook up and water. Porta potties.

Equestrian Campground — Carter Caves State Resort Park

    Under Construction

The equestrian sites are full hookups and able to accommodate large rigs with pull through sites. The RV sites are under construction and will be some time before they are done. Bathhouse is clean and up to date. The roads are narrow and windy.

    Kanawha State Forest

    Beautiful surroundings

Had an overnight stay here on our way to Red River Gorge. This was a nice stop. Fairly quiet with the exception of an annoying dog that barked incessantly and the campers across from us that had to jump in their car and drive full speed to nowhere every 20 minutes. All night long…. Pick up your firewood elsewhere unless you prefer absurdly small bundles at $8.49 per. We had site 31. Some sites are on the small side. Big rigs beware. All in all, a good spot to rest and enjoy some tree therapy.

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

Great site, not a lot to do.

Primitive Site 22 was fantastic, tucked away from everyone and quiet. Greenbo just doesn't have a lot to do if you arent boating. And that's okay. We just wanted a lazy trip anyway.

What to do

Kayaking on the lake: Four Coves Campground provides excellent access for paddling activities. The owner and staff very friendly and even set us up with a local group to show us around," reports one camper.

What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: Many campsites provide direct lake access for fishing and swimming. "The sites are large, each with a fire pit and picnic table. Many are shaded. There are lots of things to do in addition to ranger-led activities. Rental kayaks and paddle boats are available, and a swimming pool and exercise course as well," shares Fred L. from Moxley Branch Campground.

Quiet weekday camping: Campgrounds are significantly less crowded Monday through Thursday. "Monday - Wednesday we had our loop all to ourselves. We were visited by geese, ducks and deer. We didn't have a water hookup at our site and the bathrooms were older but everything was very nice and clean. Once the weekend rolled around it got pretty packed," reports Whistle P. from Four Coves Campground.

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness receives positive comments from many campers. "The campground was pretty busy over in the rv section but no one bothered us. The bathrooms were the best ones I've ever had at a campground. The store was good. Wood was like 8$. The lake view was pretty good too," states Destiny C. from Beach Fork Lake Lower Bowen.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly throughout the region. "First the good... Park was clean, employees are very helpful. You can get a spot right next to the lake. Now the bad... Not much at the camp store. Verizon service is non-existent. The WiFi only works when you get within a few feet of the office," explains Jerry S. from Beach Fork Lake Lower Bowen.

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds operate on limited schedules. East Fork Campground runs from May through October, with full amenities only available during peak season. "We camped at East Fork for 6 nights just before Halloween, enjoyed it. Not a lot to do unless you have a boat, but it's a scenic area," notes Bob M. from East Fork.

Road access challenges: Getting to some campgrounds requires careful driving. "Great campground. Terrible access road," states one succinct review from John S. about Old Orchard Campground, highlighting the sometimes difficult approaches to lakeside camping areas.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities for kids: The creek areas provide safe swimming spots for younger children. "Kids love the creeks on hot days they have so much fun! I definitely would recommend Pappy's to everyone looking for an awesome camping/cabin experience," writes TrailMom from Pappy's Creekside Camp.

Family-friendly organized activities: Beech Fork State Park offers scheduled events. "They also have lots of organized activities for families. My family and I love this campground and usually camp here a few times a year. There are always plenty of great spaces, we have never stayed at a spot that we didn't like," says Kayla H. from Four Coves Campground.

Beach area for supervised swimming: Some areas have designated swimming spots. "I haven't camped here yet but I love their beach area. It's small and easy to keep track of small children. The scenery is beautiful as well," shares Andrea R. about East Fork Campground.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Electric and water options vary by campground. "If you want a place for your kids to play and ride bikes, this is it. Campsites are a little close in some areas but when you are here, you are family!" notes Cathi from Falls Campground, which offers various hookup options.

Site dimensions: RV site sizes vary significantly across the region. "We joined friends for a quick weekend trip. Stayed in site 222, about a 3 block walk to the shower house but 1 block to a bathroom. No sewer or water hookup. Very manicured grounds, clean bathrooms/shower houses," reports Vanessa D. from Four Coves Campground.

Drainage issues: Consider site location during rainy periods. "It was our first stay ever in our RV. Our site was muddy but it did rain 2 out of 3 days. Site 32. The staff was very pleasant and helpful," shares Jerry S. about his experience at a nearby KOA.
