## Overview

East Fork Campground is located on the shores of East Lynn Lake on the East Fork of Twelvepole Creek, near East Lynn, WV. Visitors come to East Fork for camping, boating, water-skiing, fishing, hiking, hunting and picnicking.

## Recreation

East Lynn Lake stretches 12 miles up Twelvepole and offers 44 miles of shoreline. It provides many recreational activities, including boating, water skiing, canoeing and swimming.   
  
Anglers fish for largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass, black crappie, red-breast sunfish, walleye, channel catfish and muskellunge. 29 species of fish have been found in the lake.  
  
Several miles of hiking trails thread through the wooded hills on the lakeshore, including the 1.5-mile East Fork Trail, which begins within the campground. Other trails in the area include the Damsite Trail, Overlook Trail and Lakeside Trail. 

## Facilities

The campground offers 167 sites with electrical and/or water hookups. Amenities include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water, and a dump station. A boat ramp, amphitheater, playground, and basketball and volleyball courts are on-site. 

## Natural Features

The lake is situated among rolling hills forested with a mix of upland hardwood trees. A variety of wildlife makes its home around East Lynn Lake, including black bears, white-tailed deer, grouse, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, turkeys and waterfowl. 

## Nearby Attractions

The East Lynn Lake Wildlife Management Area is nearby with 25,000 acres of public lands open to hunting, fishing and hiking.

## Overview

East Lynn Lake Shelters are perfect for gathering friends and family for a fun-filled day of picnicking. Choose from four lakeside shelters along the northern tip of East Lynn Lake, a 1,005-acre lake just 35 miles south of Huntington, WV. 

East Lynn Lake is a man-made reservoir created in 1938 as part of an Ohio River Basin Flood management program. Today, its a beloved outdoor recreation area for water sports and hiking. 

#### Natural Features:

Shelters are situated on various terrains along the 12-mile long reservoir in the Ohio River Valley. Shelter 1 and 2 boast scenic overlooks at the top of the dam. Shelter 3 is nestled along a quiet creek-front, and shelter 4 is perched right on the lake with a convenient boat ramp. 

#### Recreation:

The reservoir is big enough that there are both wake-permitted and no wake zones. Visitors interested in water skiing can have their fun, while fisherman populate the calmer portions of the lake. More interested in the latter? East Lynn Lake boasts 29 species of native West Virginian fish, including musky, crappy, and bass. Outdoorsmen with a competitive edge can participate in bass tournaments held April through October.

#### Facilities:

Great for large groups and families. Each shelter seats up to 100 people, with nearby playgrounds and grassy fields. Shelter 1 and 2 have basketball courts as well.

Adjacent to the shelters is the East Lynn Lake Wildlife Management Area, which offers 25,000 acres of public land used for hunting, fishing and hiking.

Jenny Wiley State Park

Thunder River Outdoor Recreation and Campground is located along the Russell Fork River in what is known locally as the “Splashdam” area in Haysi, VA. The property was once home to a thriving coal community until a flood in 1957. After that it served as the site for a Clinchfield Coal Company “tipple” for several years. More recently the property was abandoned and had become overgrown and pretty much uninhabitable. The site, now owned by the Hill family has undergone a transformation to become a destination for camping and outdoor recreation.

The location beside the river offers access for fishing, kayaking/canoeing/tubing, swimming and picnicking in a private setting. During the month of October, with the release of water from the John Flannagan Dam, Dickenson County and the Russell Fork become a destination for white water rafters.

The property is also on an ATV route with access to the Haysi Ridgeview Trailhead approximately one mile away. The Haysi Ridgeview Trail is part of the Spearhead Trail system which in connection with the Coal Canyon trail offers approximately 200 miles of trails (connects to the town of Grundy and the Breaks Park).

New River Gorge National River preserves more than 70,000 acres of land and is home to some of West Virginia’s best whitewater flowing through it. In fact, the river running through it is one of North America’s oldest rivers.

The best camping near New River Gorge National River is anywhere you can find it. All campsites are primitive, first-come, first-served, and, best of all, free. Backcountry camping works the same way. You can park your van down by the river for free, as long as you’re self-sustaining. Amenities will be minimal at any of the nine campgrounds. Not all campgrounds are drive-in or RV accessible, so verify ahead of time. As long as you follow the park’s ordinances, you can camp here for up to 14 days. If you want more traditional lodging, there are a handful of cities nearby, but the main one is Beckley, WV.
