Reservations are available and recommended at New River Campground, a full-hookup RV and tent destination in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, where sites run $30 to $40 per night and several sit close enough to the New River that campers can fish from the bank without leaving their site. The campground operates year-round, accepts rigs up to 60 feet, and provides electric, water, and sewer hookups across most of its 39 sites. Getting in is straightforward from the main road, though one reviewer notes the approach from Route 19 involves 8% grades and tight turns with a longer trailer.
The river is the defining feature here. Sites along the bank put campers within roughly 30 feet of the water, and waterfowl are common in the evenings. Sammii D. calls it "probably the best view I ever had traveling in the RV," and multiple reviewers echo that the riverfront access alone justifies the stay. The campground sits in a valley with ridgelines on both sides, and a working railroad runs along the opposite bank. Trains pass multiple times daily, and at least six crossings were counted on one Sunday, so light sleepers should plan accordingly.
Cell service is inconsistent. Verizon users report slow or unreliable data despite showing signal bars, while AT&T reportedly works well. Wi-Fi is available on-site but described as flakey. Sites are gravel-surfaced, though wet weather can make surrounding areas muddy. Bathrooms and showers are available but have been restricted to campers without onboard facilities under a longstanding campground policy.
Cathedral Falls is a short drive down the road. Adventures on the Gorge and Adventures on the Gorge - Mill Creek are both roughly eight miles southeast for those using the area as a base for New River Gorge access. A grocery store, Dollar General, and CVS are all within walking distance of the campground entrance, which is easy to miss if approaching from the east at speed.
Firewood is sold on-site at $5 per bundle, with the owner making rounds in the late afternoon. Campers planning a riverside site should book ahead, as those spots fill faster than the back row.
