The Best Walk-In Camping Near Clayton, West Virginia

Floating Heaven is a treehouse site (not an option to include in the templated description). You can sleep in the smssll, zinc-roof covered 'casita' which can accommodate two adults and two (small) children. Or you can sleep on the deck platform in a hammock (we have one free one), a tent (bring your own or rent our 2- and 4-person tents), or in a sleeping bag(s). One platform is 10 x 10 ft. and the other is 10 x 12 ft. Eight trees pass through the platforms, located 21 feet off the ground. A sturdy low-riser step leads you up (no climbing necessary). An acre of heavily forested trees and a meadow surround the site. The term, floating heavy, refers to the tree-anchor bolts that allow the platforms to "float" when the tree canopies (60 feet tall) move in the wind. We'll get you going with some kindling and a few logs; lots of down branches and tree trunks on the property for making a nice bonfire, or you can use a small fire pit (metal) for a cozier setting. We have tables, chairs, a very slow drip-camp shower (unheated), a port-a-johnny, urinal on the top deck, and a full-port-a-johnny for #1 and #2 on the ground. There is a charcoal grill for your use at no charge. . There is also a 3-prong adapter for charging up your phones or using other electric devices. Ours is an ex-urban location; you are just two miles from Virginia Tech but you are nestled under a nice hardwood canopy.

Please arrive before sunset so we can show you around; after all, it is a treehouse and there are safety issues you should be apprised of. ***You will forfeit your reservation if you arrive after 9 p.m***. While 6 people is the maximum, the standard book rate includes 4 campers; additional campers over 12 years old should pay $15 a person. Parents must take care that their children obey the safety features. There are trails around the property that are nicely graded and gravel-covered.

Floating Heaven

The closest campground to the New River Gorge Bridge. Chestnut Creek Campground offers quiet primitive camping in the woods. We are a mere half a mile (0.5mi) from the New River Gorge Bridge! That's walking distance folks. Our hygienic facility has hot showers, lavatory stalls, hand washing sinks, and a wash basin located outside for dish washing and filling up water jugs. Firewood and Ice are available on site as well. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire pit. A general store and burrito bar are located literally around the corner; Both are within walking distance. Hiking and Climbing trail-heads (Fern Buttress, Endless Wall, Beauty Mountain; to name a few) are just down the way and access to the river is a stone's throw away (our drive is just across from Fayette Station Rd). If you're wanting to venture further to more local restaurants/shops; we are only a 5 minute drive from downtown Fayetteville. We are a pet friendly establishment for those with dogs who love to travel as much as you do. We keep quiet hours from 11pm-7am (starts @ midnight on weekends). Mainly we accommodate rustic tent camping, however; some sites are able to accommodate pop-up campers and trailers up to 20ft (we do not have hookups/electric). We are a campground nestled beside the New River in Eggleston, Va. We offer overnight and year around camping, and a boat launch. We're just a short drive to Blacksburg and Va. Tech.

Open from April through October, the Greenbrier River Campground is located on the banks of the Greenbrier River with tree-lined RV sites, wooded riverside tent camping, and rentals that include four comfortable, fully-equipped cabins, a vintage Airstream and a 1964 Shasta. Our guests have access to a thousand feet of riverfront for great fishing and one of the best swimming holes on the river. We also offer full-service tubing, kayak, and canoe trips in the very heart of the best paddling waters on the Greenbrier. There’s Class I thru Class III action for all levels of paddling skill.

Bluestone State Park

Located at the end of Glade Creek Road, off Route 41 near Prince. Coming from Beckley, Glade Creek Road is a well-marked right hand turn before crossing the New River. Follow Glade Creek Road for six miles to the campground. There are six walk-in tent sites and five drive-in sites for tents or small-medium RVs. There is one accessible site.

The best camping near New River Gorge National River is anywhere you can find it. All campsites are primitive, first-come, first-served, and, best of all, free. Backcountry camping works the same way. You can park your van down by the river for free, as long as you’re self-sustaining. Amenities will be minimal at any of the nine campgrounds. Not all campgrounds are drive-in or RV accessible, so verify ahead of time. As long as you follow the park’s ordinances, you can camp here for up to 14 days.
