    Half Moon Bay State Beach Campground

    Popular coastal camping

    General: 52 RV/tent sites, four walk-in oceanfront tent sites, and a hiker/biker camp. 28 sites have electric hookups. No sewer (there is a dump station) and shared water spigots. 

    Site Quality: Sites are paved with room for an additional vehicle and are level. Some sites have decent spacing between them, but others have no privacy/separation (the internal sites with electric have less privacy). IMO, sites 48 and 16 are the best sites. 

    Bath/shower: Two bathhouses each with all-in-one toilet/sink combos. They could use a little TLC. Showers are standard CA state park requiring tokens to use. Did not use them. 

    Activities/Amenities: There are three trails for easy ocean access. Beach is long and ok for walking, but in the springtime, the beach is littered with “blue sailfish”. Dogs are not allowed. Walking north is better than south. The 7.5-mile Half Moon Bay Coastal multi-use trail is easily accessible from the campground. Little Free Library. There is a host on site who sells firewood for $15 from 4:30-9:30 pm daily. 

    There are not many camping options in this area, and the campground was fully booked during the week in mid-May. We had to make reservations several months in advance and could only get two nights, and we had to move sites. Four stars due to the lack of privacy between many of the sites.

    Sawtooth Sky Camp

    Beautiful sunrises and sunsets

    If you're looking for peace, wide-open desert views, and amazing sunrises and sunsets, Sawtooth Canyon is a great place to camp. The campsites are spread out enough to enjoy some privacy, and the night sky is incredible for stargazing. It's a perfect spot to relax, explore the surrounding desert, and disconnect from the busy city. Be sure to bring plenty of water, as there are limited services nearby, but that's part of what makes this place feel so remote and peaceful. I'd definitely visit again.

    Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA

    Best time at a KOA!!

    This has been an honestly fun time. Many unexpected things, like movies now night, community campfire, and great of leash dog park area. The staff are so helpful. Delivered fire wood and propane to the site. If you’re not able to score a site with sewer hook-up, don’t worry. They offer a honey bucket service that comes to your RV for $15. All the usual amenities at a KOA, plus a pool, game room, and small general store. We will definitely be back. Oh and, look for a place to enjoy Thanksgiving, this place have a community pot luck, bring a side dish to share. They provide the turkey.

    Scotts Lake Rd Dispersed Camping

    Great for Lake Tahoe visit

    We stayed here 2 nights while visiting Tahoe. There were several spots to park and roads to explore. It was quiet and the surface was dirt. I found a pull through die that was easy.

    Mystic Forest Campground

    Family Friendly and Perfect

    We enjoyed our stay here. The owners are wonderful. They have a cute gift shop with hand crafted expresso. The area is nice and clean. Our site was nice.Restrooms were great and they have a laundry facility which we did not use but everyone else was. They also have a little putt-putt area. We will be back.

    Rock Creek Campground — Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area

    Great for beginners

    Great first solo camping experience! My first time camping solo, with brand-new gear (fresh off the Amazon delivery truck!). The campground made it easy — clean, well-maintained amenities and grounds, and friendly, respectful neighbors who helped me feel safe and comfortable throughout my stay. Would definitely recommend for anyone dipping their toes into solo camping.

    Ventana Campground

    Nice, but Overpriced and Crowded

    This is a resort campground. Nice bathrooms w/ showers, well kept campsites, a store in the campground, beautiful redwoods and staff rolling around in golf carts. For $80 you basically share a campsite with 2-3 other groups and park your car in tiny parking spaces. For spending that kind of money I was expecting to have some more space. The only place I’ve been so close to other people was upper pines in Yosemite.

    I recommend this as a backup option for your camping in Big Sur. The price for what you get is not worth it and there is cheaper and much better camping around the area - just book far in advance!

    Crescent City/Redwoods KOA

    Site 601 – Redwoods KOA, Crescent City

    Stayed at site 601 July 17–20. Site itself was very exposed with no privacy — there’s another section of the park where you can actually sleep under the redwoods, and I’d recommend requesting that side instead. Playground nearby was nice for the kids. Washers and dryers on site were a welcome treat, and good cell service was a nice change of pace. Grounds were well maintained and staff were friendly. Bathrooms were a letdown though, especially coming straight from Crater Lake, which were in far better shape — toilets were clogged, showers were dingy and dirty, surprising for a KOA on my first stay with them. Very noisy late at night with no patrolling to keep things in check.
