Great River Side Spots

My family and I stayed here recently to get away.  This campground is situated right next to San Luis Rey River.  Any riverside camping in San Diego is very rare.  The River was small, but the sounds were nice.  Weather was great.

The restrooms here are awful; poorly lit and maintained.  Wish they'd put some effort into making the place look cared for.

Fun family camp ground

Lots of sounds and sites to explore!! The spaces all had water and fire rings with tables. Bathrooms and showers were decent and relatively clean…showers do cost 25 cents for 2 minutes!

Close to Home and Spacious

I really dig these spots because they are well spaced out. It's right around the corner from my cabin so it's a great spot to get outside for the weekend without an epic drive.

More than we expected

Spent Spring break here with the family. We read a lot of reviews on this park - many of them mixed. Overall, this park did not disappoint - too much.

Amenities are very good for young kids. Canopy Court area has easy and close access to the splash pad, the playground, a large grass area, and even the pool. The boat launch is very near by too but we had no use for that.

This park is clean! Like no park I have seen before. The staff are always moving around the grounds and “picking up” as they go. Quiet hours are strict - some may see that as a bad thing but I appreciate it. Even with 4 young kids, we like that the park slowed down right on time.

Only arguments - the spots are relatively tight. We reserved a spot for a rig with slide outs on both sides to accommodate our 39’er but it took some creative parking to get the rig into the spot in a way that we could actually open both sides. Once in, we had to make sure we pulled back far enough otherwise the very nice provided picnic table would of been right next to the front wheel. Water pressure is a bit low too but nothing terrible.

Location wise - awesome. We used the campground as a base camp to spend time in LA and San Diego as well as a day in Joshua Tree National Park. 1-2 hours from everything.

We will definitely be back.

Camping, biking, hiking, surfing…

Our family had a great time camping at site number 23 in San Mateo campground. Electrical and water hook ups, a great view, and a lot of space to enjoy this one of a kind Campground. Your camp ground receipt permits you to drive down to San Clemente State Beach and park feet from the water with no extra charge. Great mountain biking Just off the main road. Having an E bike allows you to zip back-and-forth to the world famous Trestles Surfing beach, or you can park on the main street and walk in about a quarter mile to this beautiful beach. This camping area is a couple of miles across from the Marine base, and when we arrived there was some live artillery training during the daytime. At first we thought there were thunderstorms in the area🤓

Great family friendly safe campground

Giant oval loop with camp sites all along both sides. Rv sites, tent sites and equestrian (horse) sites. Paved road is good for bike riding. Behind my Camp site was a few different hiking paths. Restroom buildings have water, toilets, and showers. It says to bring quarters for the showers but they were free. Each site is typical… Picnic bench, fire pit, and metal grill. No gathering fire wood, gotta buy it at local grocery or gas station. $20 a night. Lots of families with kids. Feels really safe here. Saw the park rangers driving around and the front has a gate guard who checks you in. Also only 10 minutes away from city.

Family Friendly Borrego Springs full with hookups

A nice little (120 spaces or so) full hookup (30 and 50 amp) campground.  We paid $289 for 5 nights. Clean, well maintained and full of families.  Very close to downtown and Anza-Borrego Visitor Center.  Spaces are good size, no problems fitting our 30' toy hauler towed by F250, and the park is well laid out and easy to drive. Checkin was fast and easy.  There are full time residents, but they are in a different section.  We used it as a base for hiking and off-roading at Octotillo Wells (both recommended, but bring as much water as you  can carry). The property has an old west theme, and there is also a hotel , laundromat and restaurant. If you have never visited this part of California, be advised that the wind here can be VERY intense, especially at night.  Also note that Borrego Springs is a dark sky community, so please be respectful and remember to look up and enjoy the stars.

Beautiful

Basic little ground with water and bathroom If you need it

Free (for now at least) Anza-Borrego adjacent boondocking

We decided to extend our Borrego Springs trip (first time here) by one night and try a little boondocking at Peg Leg Smith Historical Marker (yes, there is actually a marker).  We did not arrive until well after dark, so the parking was a little challenging (F250 pulling a 30' Toy Hauler) but overall not bad at all.

The lot is fairly uneven (for free-99, what do you expect?) but was a great little spot (the uneveness of the lot can be easily dealt with by leveling ).  We were one of 7 rigs there for the night, and there was one group of tent campers.  The only real issue was the wind, which is very common for the desert - about 2 hours after sunset, it really started to howl an rocked the trailer until about 8am the next day.

We were able to find it in the dark without too much drama.  We entered from the Salton City side - exited Highway 86 at  Sunrise Road, then Borrego Springs Road for 22 miles or so.
