    River Ranch Campground

    Beautiful but STRICT

    This campsite was well kept, in a beautiful area not toooo far from stores if you forget anything and a really beautiful creek and river around it. The camp hosts are nice and seem to really care about the property, which I love seeing. There is no electric hookups at least at some of the sites which is fine, just be aware to plan for that if you need any medical devices etc. The mosquitoes are rabid. So come prepared with the best repellent you can get. They keep the potties clean but like of spiders in them that have clearer been left there, one had a small wasps nest that I took care of since it was right by our head in the toilet. I also wouldn’t plan to swim, if it gets warm enough I guess, but the water is literally ice cold. I got in to my ankles and they were red and stinging after about 10 seconds.

    While I understand most of their rules the one rule that is THE MOST insisted and on literally all points of booking and checking in is that they don’t allow any music of and level on any speakers. I understand quiet times and having a sound limit but absolutely no music seems extreme to me. Especially for families, my kids love music and it’s a daily part of our lives, and as a place they used to hold literal music festivals it seems a little saddening to me.

    But overall it was a nice time.

    I enjoyed four peaceful days

    I have some reservations about writing this review because my experience at this campground was wonderful. I enjoyed four peaceful days there, and, surprisingly, there were never more than three campers present. The other visitors were all gray-haired, which contributed to the serenity—there were no barking dogs, loud generators, music, or screaming kids. I spoke with some long-time campers who advised against visiting during holiday weekends and summer; they warned that it can turn chaotic. Marion Mountain, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, exudes character and has a relaxed atmosphere that is not geared for partying, although some attempt to make it so. This campground strictly allows only tent camping and very small teardrop trailers or camper vans; RVs and fifth-wheelers are not permitted. The upper loop(sites 1-5) is great for van or tent camping, but parking is limited to one car/van per site, with no extra parking available. This restriction minimizes the flow of day hikers and keeps the campground tranquil. The inside loop features flatter ground for pitching tents, but it does come with close campsites, reducing privacy since the road rings around sites six through ten, which require a short walk to access. On the lower loop, the outside sites are sloped, and you also need to walk to them. The interior sites here are flat but closely packed, creating a cramped environment. I rated this campground one star for weekends and holidays, but it earns five stars on weekdays and in the shoulder seasons. I would absolutely return, but definitely not on weekends! If I want to hear screaming kids and barking dogs, I can just visit my grandkids. If you value a peaceful camping experience, choose your timing wisely!

    Salt Point State Park Campground

    Great time

    This was our first camping trip and we loved this location. Very close to the water, we could hear the ocean at night which was so peaceful. There were other campers but everyone was chill and quiet.

    There’s GREAT hiking and although the camp is pet friendly not all the trails are so be aware of that.

    As others mentioned, there isn’t a ton around so make sure you’ve got everything or get there early enough to utilize shops before they close.

    We stayed at spot 18 which was lovely, good trees for the hammock and you could see the ocean. Our spot wasn’t completely flat and we slid around in there quite a bit but it didn’t ruin our stay.

    We also had great cell service and use Verizon.

    Westgate Landing Regional Park

    A beautifully-disorganized little campground.

    The campgrounds was well kept - grass was mowed - trashes empty. Beautiful little spot if you like to fish the delta. But they have a sign as you enter the property that says “Pay Here” but don’t do that because the prices on the sign are not correct, and the instructions are also incorrect… I guess. I know this because I was told that I got it wrong and if you argue about it, they will threaten to call the sheriff. I like sheriffs.

    Ritchey Creek Campground — Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

    Great location, tight spots

    The location is great since you’re close to st Helena and Calistoga. The road is narrow and the spots are tricky to back into. It was our first time with out 20ft trailer and we struggled a bit, took us three tries we kept having to drive around the loop of the campground. Lots of poison oak. Dog friendly on the paved road/path. We didn’t use the pool, but it’s open 1-5pm and it’s spring fed. Lots of kids, definitely kid friendly since it’s so small!

    Creek Tent Campground — Hearst San Simeon State Park

    I pulled up and left, it was that bad

    I wanted a nice stopping point on my drive from Big Sur back to LA, and thought this would be a sweet spot.  Wrong. I pulled up to my site on the Upper Section Campground, and frankly was appalled they charge for this.  It felt like a big parking lot.  No separation between campgrounds, no privacy, super windy. mostly asphalt.  Really just awful.  I didn't even stay.  I chose to drive back to LA instead. I can't believe they charge $43 with fees for that.  Really embarrassing for the CA State Parks!

    Emerald Forest Cabins & RV

    Nice older campground and cabins

    We’ve stayed at this campground a few times now. The front office staff is very friendly and accommodating, always helpful. Easy in and easy out. Bathrooms are in decent shape for an older campground. Showers are 50 cents for 5 minutes. Also very dog friendly. We will be back again when heading up or down the coast.
