    Summit Lake North — Lassen Volcanic National Park

    Excellent place to visit Lassen NP!

    We’ve camped here every year for the past five years. This was the our first trip with our new to us travel trailer. We book six months in advance and always get sites B2 and B3. These sites have a beautiful view of the lake. We get up early and set up our blanket and chairs in our lake spot. The lake is big enough to paddle board and kayak but small enough where you can keep an eye on your kids the entire time.

    Zero hook ups whatsoever, but you can use the dump station for free at Manzanita lake on your way up to fill your freshwater and then dump on your way out. Summit Lake North has flush toilets and sinks, I believe Summit Lake South Campground only has vault toilets.

    Park Rangers patrol through every once in a while and the bathrooms are cleaned and stocked daily.

    There is no cell service but if you drive about five minutes up the hill, you can get some service. It is a short drive to Kings Creek Falls and about a 15 minute drive to bumpass hell.

    Highly recommended.

    Last minute stay

    Neeeded a spot for a last minute sleep and this spot saved us. It has clean bathrooms, fire ring own picnic table and even includes bear storage. I loved this spot.

    Laguna Seca Recreation Area

    Unusual but works...

    First time I've camped at a racetrack but it worked. Was car camping and had my choice of sites overlooking the valley by the entrance to the Fort Ord trail. Check in was friendly but their payment app on a mobile was a bit buggy. Small issue with the tent sites was flatness but I got there. Benches / fire pits/ decent shower facilities. It was late so I didn't get a chance to check out the store (if it had one). Glorious sunrise with the marine layer below in the valley.

    Klamath Camper Corral

    Lots of space

    Nice big area if camping with a tent. Flat and fire pits / dining benches / trash facilities. The entertainment barn was not open, moderately stocked camp store. Showers had decent hot water / pressure but don't forget your towels. Friendly and helpful staff... Wonderful stargazing but prepare for the semis coming through on the very close 101 about 3am. Paid $29 for a 1p tent site.

    Barstow-Calico KOA

    Nice KOA for an overnight stop.

    Nice KOA for an overnight stop. The campground is clean, quiet, and well maintained, and the dog park was excellent—our dogs really enjoyed stretching their legs after a long drive. The only issue was the pull-through full-hookup site. The sewer connection was on the wrong (driver's) side and located near the front of the truck, so our standard sewer hose wouldn't reach. We needed about a 30-foot sewer hose to make the connection. Overall, we'd definitely stay here again. Just be prepared if you plan to use the sewer hookup in a pull-through site.

    Lacks Creek BLM

    Beautiful sunsets

    This was a pretty nice spot. Only about 3 campsites with tables and fire pits, but a few others along the road. The view was nice and the sunsets were amazing! It was very quiet at night, no noise from the road. There are some trail heads close to the campsites, but some are very overgrown. The only downside was lots of mosquitoes, even out after dark. The road was also very rocky, but manageable. Be careful to go slow and avoid sharp rocks, because I ended up with a flat tire on the way out. Cell service isn't bad, but the nearest town is about 1 hr away. Weather was warm and dry, with some light mist at night. We did see a black bear on our way down the road, but not muh other wildlife besides birds.

    While every where else is booked up and charging crazy rates. You can come out and enjoy the sounds of the animals and look at the amazingly big birds flying in the sky.

    Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area

    New bathrooms and beautiful sunset

    This campground has many wonderful features, but also some issues. Here on a Friday night in July and all sites were taken - many family groups, here to enjoy their boats and jet skis on the lake. There are new bathrooms, that have separate toilet and shower rooms. They were clean when we arrived at 5pm, but by 9 pm the toilets were clogged and the shower rooms dirty. Grateful for our cassette toilet! Avoid the older buildings with toilets only. The women’s sink was clogged, the seats are metal and no latch or difficult to latch doors. The men’s were a clogged mess.

    As one other reviewer noted, the ground is pocketed with ground critter holes. There are grassy areas to pitch a tent in most sites.

    Our campsite was not clean when we arrived - bits of garbage, broken glass, dog poops throughout. We spent some time cleaning up so we and our dog could safely walk around.

    I am sure it is a much more pleasant experience in the off season or mid-week. The lake is beautiful, many sites have new picnic tables and the new bathrooms and showers are nice when clean. The sites are well spaced, and when reserving, you can opt of shade, partial shade or no shade. All sites have electrical and water.!

    Gaviota Campground — Gaviota State Park

    Overall good

    Pros:

    • friendly camp store staff and ranger
    • very good accessibility to beach & lifeguard on the beach
    • small campground
    • shower room

    Cons:

    • yellow jacket/ants issues
    • dirty restroom - more of user issue
    • not much of shade
    • severe wind after sunset. Make sure you anchor your shade/tent otherwise they cant stand 19-25mph gush winds
