    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds near Westport, Wisconsin include several established options within Dane County and the surrounding area. William G. Lunney Lake Farm Campground and Mendota County Park serve as popular destinations offering both tent and RV camping with electric hookups. Most campgrounds in the region accommodate different camping styles with developed sites for recreational vehicles up to 50 feet in length at certain locations. The terrain primarily consists of lakefront or park-like settings with varying levels of shade and privacy between sites. Within a 30-mile radius, campers can find several state and county parks providing established campgrounds with amenities like showers, picnic tables, and fire rings.

Seasonal considerations impact campground availability around Westport, with most facilities operating from spring through fall. Token Creek County Park operates from May 1 to September 1, while others like Mendota County Park remain open year-round. Reservations are recommended, particularly for summer weekends when lakefront sites fill quickly. Many campgrounds offer 30-amp electric service, but water hookups are less common, with potable water typically available at central locations. Bathroom and shower facilities are standard at most developed sites, though cleanliness and maintenance vary. One camper noted, "Bring you kayak and fishing poles. 30 amp hookups no water at the sites," highlighting the need to plan for water access.

Waterfront camping receives consistently positive reviews, with Lake Mendota sites particularly praised for their recreational opportunities. Campers report that while sites are often close together with limited privacy, the lake access compensates for this drawback. Several visitors mentioned the convenient location of Mendota County Park, with one noting it offers "Great location on the lake and short drive to downtown Madison." Road noise can be an issue at some locations, particularly Token Creek County Park which sits near major highways. Reviews frequently mention mosquitoes as a significant concern during summer months, especially in areas near marshes or water features. Most campgrounds provide basic amenities like picnic tables and fire rings, with clean restrooms and shower facilities receiving mixed reviews depending on the specific location and time of visit.

      Fireside Campground

      Family, Pet, Motorcycle Friendly!

This is a fantastic Campground, especially for RVs and families. Large playground and outdoor games, small indoor rec area. During busy weekends with lots of kids and holidays, they have foam parties for the kids where they fill the basketball court with foam 3 ft High. Most sites are permanent sites, but have probably around 20 other 30 amp sites that can accommodate large RVs. There are only a few tent sites, but if tent is your only option and you still want to stay they will rent you an RV site for the tent. New owners are very friendly, and have adopted the same overwhelmingly hospitable nature as the previous owners. Fantastic people and very helpful. It will accommodate special needs or requests as long as it doesn't bother anybody or go against any insurance policies. I've had a permanent site here in the past, and recently started camping again and came to visit old friends. The new owners were still happy to accommodate semi truck parking for my job. I haul milk locally so I work more than I'm off, but the family can still camp and I can come when I'm done work. It is near the Wisconsin River, so it's fairly sand base although the Grass Grows plenty so you're not tracking sand everywhere. The benefits of this is when it rains heavily the sand absorbs the water rapidly. The only negative is the mosquitoes. Be prepared for mosquitoes with lots of bug spray. This is no fault of the campground, all low wetlands in Wisconsin are the same. The bathrooms are some of the best in any Campground I've seen. They are always clean, modernized, and Air condition. There are showers and bathroom stalls near the park. They try to keep families close to the park if possible for the bathrooms and the park access itself. They are really extremely accommodating for requests if it's in their power at all. The owners live at the campground and are always accessible by a simple phone call if after hours. There's a community vibe, with a community fire pit up front and often people are just hanging out outside of the main office. It embodies our Wisconsin way of life and you will find strangers waving at you every time you pass by. It's just our nature, don't be weirded out by the friendliness. The regular permanent campers are all so friendly and always willing to help a newbie or even someone struggling to figure out a problem or even carry things.

      Fairgrounds RV Park

      Nice simple facility

Nothing special but a nice spot if you need somewhere to park your camper and stay. Electric and water hookups, decent showers and bathrooms. Septic on site. We stayed here for an event at the fairgrounds but there were also several others staying here while they were in town for work.

      Fireside Campground

      Cute campground with great hosts.

Found this campground by chance after the campground I had planned to stay at was a complete disaster. Luckily, they were able to get me a campsite for two nights where I could regroup do a little laundry and chill out also took a bike ride on the bike path.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Fort Atkinson

      A midwest gem… I guess

Our friends have a permanent camper here so we joined them for the weekend. I’ve never experienced a place like this. It’s not what I would consider camping. It’s basically people’s second trailer park home. The frog pond that was turned into a swimming hole with ridiculous inflatables completely ruined the peaceful atmosphere in that area of the park. If you enjoy being surrounded by people, noise, and teens cruising in golf carts, you’ll love this place. We do have fun when we are with our friends here, but it is definitely not a typical peaceful camp.

      Nature's Touch Campground

      Maybe an off day?

First, the staff was very accommodating, and we appreciated it. We made a last minute booking over the phone and requested a late check-in, and they were wonderful about making it happen for us.

Once we arrived, everything seemed to go wrong. It appears there’s been a recent change in ownership. The campground was marked with a different name and we weren’t sure we were in the right place. Then, the sites and the hookup numbers don’t match, so again we weren’t sure we were in the right place. Once we found our spot, the site next to us had spread into our space, so we had to wait to pull in until they moved their stuff out of the way. Even so, the lots were very tight. The women’s bathroom was unkept - hair and bugs in the sink, and no toilet paper. A half-drunk bottle of Fireball was in the men’s room.

We also woke to a cracked windshield. Not necessarily the campground’s fault, but just added to the experience.

It worked for a one night stop-over, but wouldn’t have chosen it for a lengthy stay.

      Astico County Park

      Great little QUIET county park!!

We stayed here one night and had a great experience! The restroom/bathhouse is super clean, conveniently located, and NEW. A refreshing thing after roughing it. We took a trail down to the trussle bridge that goes across the river. Nice nature view. Fishing was good too, near the bridge at the entrance to the park. My son was there maybe 5 min and hooked a decent sized pike. We brought our two dogs and they enjoyed the quiet of the park and the trails. Only complaint I had was that someone previously had left dog poop at our site, but sometimes people don't clean up after their pets. Our site had electric, only 30 amp hookup but we had a 50 amp adapter and it worked well. We would definitely stay again.

      Wonderful campground!!!

This is a wonderful campground with many amenities for the whole family. The sites are a good size, plenty of shade. Indoor and outdoor pool, Kiddie pool, mini golf, playgrounds, pond with inflatables, pond to fish(catch and release) paddle boats, row boats, kayaking. gaga pit, shuffleboard. Wonderful store stocked with everything you need and then some. They have a grill if you want to order food. Game room and arcade. Clean bathrooms and showers. Storm shelter under the bathrooms and showers. I can't say enough what a wonderful campground this is!!

Twin Valley Campground — Governor Dodge State Park

Beautiful campgrounds everything else not so much.

First of all I have never paid so much for a state campground. By the time they were done tacking on fees it $72 a night, $15 extra for being out of state. There is only one dump station for over 320 sites. There was no water available in the campground, they were all torn up.  Fortunately, the weather was fairly cool so we didn't need to run our air. Every time we tried to run more than 2 things at a time it tripped the 30 amp breaker. Very dissapointed for the price paid.

    Guide to Westport

Westport camping options feature flat to gently rolling terrain with numerous small waterways amid the glaciated landscape. Sites in this area range from 800 to 1100 feet in elevation, with summer high temperatures typically reaching 80-85°F. The region's clay-loam soil drains moderately well, though seasonal rain can affect tent site conditions.

    What to Do

Hiking trails with water views: At William G. Lunney Lake Farm Campground, trails connect directly to Madison's broader trail system. "There are trails right through the campground that are on Madison's trail system. There is a daily fee for the trails but I think it was $5 for the day," notes one visitor. The paved Capital City Trail connects campers to downtown Madison.

Fishing opportunities: Lake Kegonsa State Park Campground offers multiple fishing spots. A maintenance employee mentioned "people were catching fish with hot dogs!" The park includes a beach area and boat launch to enjoy the lake, plus multiple hiking trails ranging from quick half-mile treks to longer loops.

Disc golf and nature observation: Token Creek County Park features disc golf courses plus hiking trails through meadow, marsh, and forest habitats. The park includes "a boardwalk" through wetland areas and "separate small and any-size off leash dog areas" for pet owners, making it one of the top camping destinations near Westport for dog owners.

    What Campers Like

Convenient location: Mendota County Park provides easy access to Madison while enjoying nature. "Great for family camping. Lots of places to eat near by if you dont want to cook and still want to be outside," explains one camper. The proximity to urban amenities while maintaining a natural setting makes this one of the best places to camp near Westport, Wisconsin.

Clean facilities: Campers frequently praise the maintenance of bathrooms and showers. At Babcock County Park, users mention "Clean restrooms, great showers, clean little campground." Though small in size, the park's attention to cleanliness creates a pleasant camping experience.

Recreation options: Blue Mound State Park offers extensive activities beyond just camping. "The pool is very nice and very clean. There is a pool section and a splash section. There are chairs and lounges around both and shade awnings," shares one visitor. The park's $3 adult/$2 child pool fee provides affordable recreation.

    What You Should Know

Reservation timing: For popular sites like Devils Lake State Park, plan far ahead. "You need to book the 11 months in advance, especially for holiday weekends," advises one camper. Sites fill quickly, particularly for summer weekends and holidays.

Site privacy varies widely: At Lantern DeForest, previously called Madison Campground, one camper noted "My only complaint is that not every pull through is provided with a fire ring to burn wood (they almost seem random)." Another mentioned their premium site "was shaded with lots of trees" and they "paid extra to be on the end" for more privacy.

Weather and bugs: Mosquitoes can be problematic, especially near water. One camper reported Lake Kegonsa had "gnats and mosquitoes were relentless, especially in the grassy areas so bring bug spray!" Seasonal storms can appear quickly, so secure tent stakes and rain flies properly.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Look for playground access: Blue Mound State Park Campground offers excellent family amenities. "It is a beautiful park with tons of trees. Beautiful hiking trails everywhere for different levels of hiker. The pool is awesome, and the splash pad is absolutely incredible. This is a great place to camp with little kids," reports one family.

Choose sites near facilities: When camping with children, bathroom proximity matters. At Quartzite Campground in Devils Lake State Park, one camper advised selecting sites strategically: "Look at the maps and pick your site with care. You either get Sun or shade. Bathrooms are both new and old depending on site location."

Pack water toys: For lakefront camping near Westport, bring swimming gear. "Devils lake state park is a busy place. Over 2 million visitors a year! Climbing is popular and there are people to help teach you," notes a visitor. Swimming beaches provide natural entertainment for children on hot summer days.

    Tips from RVers

Extension cord needs: At Mendota County Park, electrical access points can be distant from parking pads. "The power box is located at the very end of the camper pad, but extension cords are available from the camp host," shares one RVer. Bringing your own 25-50 foot heavy-duty extension cord is recommended.

Dump station logistics: William G. Lunney Lake Farm Campground has a single dump station that can create bottlenecks. "The one road can get congested when you are waiting for the dump station," notes one RVer. Plan early morning or late afternoon dumping to avoid peak times.

Low clearance warnings: Watch for height restrictions when driving larger rigs. At Lake Kegonsa State Park, one camper warned: "There is an oak tree near entry with low branches and it took the AC off our friend's fifth wheel. There is also a low hanging overpass and it took the roofs off TWO fifth wheels while we were staying there."
